The painting depicts the dramatic moment when Argentinian Luis Firpo knocked American Jack Dempsey out of the ring into the crowd during their 1923 match. Dempsey would go to win the fight. Bellows gave himself a cameo as the balding man seen to the bottom left edge of the oil painting.
