He conveys his love for Texas and advises that his visit three years ago proved that there is no gap in his life. He describes his years in Massachusettes; "Living and sometimes competing with these Mayflower-Harvard names is sometimes a bit galling, more often amusing. Generally, I find it more gratifying to shock than to please them". He expresses his appreciation to Carswell for the call, letter and kind considerations for some fifty years making note of their lasting friendship even after years of separation.
