THE (5-PHENYL-2-OXAZOLYL)PYRIDINES AS FLUORESCENT pH INDICATORS. AN APPLICATION TO CHEMICAL RADIATION DOSIMETRY
The three isomeric (5-phenyl-2-oxazolyl)pyridines have been shown to be sensitive fluorescent pH indicators which show a pronounced change to increased visible fluorescence as the pH is lowered. Absorption and fluorescence spectral data and pK values are given. Selective excitation of fluorescence from the conjugate acid in the presence of the free base was found possible. The sensitivity of the 4-isomer was demonstrated to be adequate for determining the small amounts of acid produced in certain chemical dosimeter systems. (auth)

The following report describes the use of airborne radioactivity surveying and analytical techniques in geologic exploration by examples of the analysis or evaluation of airborne data related to specific geologic settings. The airborne radioactivity surveying program was begun in 1949 by the U.S. Geological Survey to assist in uranium exploration.

An Analysis of Maurice Ravel's Technique of Orchestration
It is interesting to note that several of Ravel's compositions for the piano were successful only after he had orchestrated them. Ravel, a pianist, had a natural gift for orchestration, and when writing for the piano he seems to have projected his thoughts to the orchestra; thus some of his works are more successful' for the orchestra than for the piano. Since he orchestrated several of his own piano compositions, these present an excellent opportunity for a study of his orchestrations.

An Analysis of the Background Variables of Negro High School Youth in the Texas Cooperative Youth Study
The purpose of the Texas Cooperative Youth Study was to gather basic data on the problems and interests of youth from youth themselves, their teachers, and their parents in the stages of early, middle, and late adolescence. The study was made to determine interests, attitudes, and concerns of youth in relation to home and family life; to determine whether homemaking education in the school takes into account these concerns and attitudes; and to find out whether interest in homemaking education is related to selected background and sociological variables.

Analytical and Experimental Investigation of Aerodynamic Forces and Moments on Low-Aspect-Ratio Wings Undergoing Flapping Oscillations
"Aerodynamic forces and moments associated with flapping oscillations of finite wings at low speeds are considered. A comparison of theoretical and experimental results is made for a rectangular wing of aspect ratio 2. Calculated results are also given for three tapered wings of aspect ratio 3 with varying amounts of sweepback" (p. 1).

Boundary-layer stability diagrams for electrically conducting fluids in the presence of a magnetic field
From Summary: "The effectiveness of a magnetic field in stabilizing the laminar flow of an incompressible, electrically conducting fluid is studied. The neutral stability curves pertaining to a two-dimensional sinusoidal disturbance are presented for flow over a semi-infinite flat plate in the presence of either a coplanar or transverse magnetic field and for channel flow in the presence of a coplanar or transverse magnetic field and for channel flow in the presence of a coplanar magnetic field. As is to be expected, the magnetic field stabilizes the flow unless the velocity profile is distorted by the magnetic field to an inherently unstable shape."
