Correlation of cylinder-head temperatures and coolant heat rejections of a multicylinder, liquid-cooled engine of 1710-cubic-inch displacement

"Data obtained from an extensive investigation of the cooling characteristics of four multicylinder, liquid-cooled engines have been analyzed and a correlation of both the cylinder-head temperatures and the coolant heat rejections with the primary engine and coolant variables was obtained. The method of correlation was previously developed by the NACA from an analysis of the cooling processes involved in a liquid-cooled-engine cylinder and is based on the theory of nonboiling, forced-convection heat transfer. The data correlated included engine power outputs from 275 to 1860 brake horsepower; coolant flows from 50 to 320 gallons per minute; coolants varying in composition from 100 percent water to 97 percent ethylene glycol and 3 percent water; and ranges of engine speed, manifold pressure, carburetor-air temperature, fuel-air ratio, exhaust-gas pressure, ignition timing, and coolant temperature" (p. 207).

Calculated Condenser Performance for a Mercury-Turbine Power Plant for Aircraft

"As part of an investigation of the application of nuclear energy to various types of power plants for aircraft, calculations have been made to determine the effect of several operating conditions on the performance of condensers for mercury-turbine power plants. The analysis covered 8 range of turbine-outlet pressures from 1 to 200 pounds per square inch absolute, turbine-inlet pressures from 300 to 700 pounds per square inch absolute,and a range of condenser cooling-air pressure drops, airplane flight speeds, and altitudes. The maximum load-carrying capacity (available for the nuclear reactor, working fluid, and cargo) of a mercury-turbine powered aircraft would be about half the gross weight of the airplane at a flight speed of 509 miles per hour and an altitude of 30,000 feet" (p. 1).

A Comparison of Flight Measurements With Calculations of the Loss in Rolling Effectiveness Due to Wing Twist

"A flight investigation was conducted with a fighter-type airplane to determine the loss in rolling effectiveness due to wing twist, and the results are compared with the loss in rolling effectiveness calculated by use of a simplified method. The computed rolling velocities showed good agreement with experimentally determined rolling velocities throughout the Mach number range covered by the flights. Extrapolation of the flight data indicated a Mach number for reversal which agreed well with that obtained from calculations" (p. 1).

Photographic study of combustion in a rocket engine I : variation in combustion of liquid oxygen and gasoline with seven methods of propellant injection

From Summary: "Motion pictures at camera speeds up to 3000 frames per second were taken of the combustion of liquid oxygen and gasoline in a 100-pound-thrust rocket engine. The engine consisted of thin contour and injection plates clamped between two clear plastic sheets forming a two-dimensional engine with a view of the entire combustion chamber and nozzle. A photographic investigation was made of the effect of seven methods of propellant injection on the uniformity of combustion. From the photographs, it was found that the flame front extended almost to the faces of the injectors with most of the injection methods, all the injection systems resulted in a considerable nonuniformity of combustion, and luminosity rapidly decreased in the divergent part of the nozzle."

The Preparation of Uranium

The method used for the preparation of uranium metal in a fused state was reduction of uranium chloride with calcium in a refractory-lined bomb. The reaction was started by externally heating the bomb with a gas flame. The metal was obtained in a solid chunk which was covered with a layer of fused calcium chloride. The metal obtained by this process had a density of 17.6 which on remelting in a vacuum induction furnace rose to 18.8. The melting temperature of the metal was estimated to be no greater than 1400 C. The metal was malleable, and had a silvery surface when freshly cut which rapidly tarnished, becoming black in the course of a few days.

"The J33-A-23 compressor with a 34-blade impeller was operated at ambient inlet temperature and an inlet pressure of 14 inches mercury absolute over a range of equivalent impeller speeds from 6000 to 11,750 rpm. Additional runs at equivalent speeds of 7,000, 10,000, and 11,750 rpm and ambient inlet temperature were made at inlet pressures of 5 and 10 inches mercury absolute. The results of this investigation are compared with those of the J33-A-23 compressor with a 17-blade impeller" (p. 1).

This memorandum is an outline of hydrologic investigations that seem desirable at the Hanford Directed Operations of the Atomic Energy Commission. In its present form, the outline is tentative and is intended as a basis for further considerations in the Commission, the Geological Survey, and other agencies concerned. In scope, it seeks to cover (1) advisory functions to the Atomic Energy Commission and its prime contractor with respect to an evaluation of the continuing hazards due to process wastes, also with respect to water-supply problems of the expanding operations at Hanford; also (2) civilian-protection aspects of possible emergencies, especially in the region adjacent to the Hanford reservation.

Application of one part of Von Karman's two-dimensional transonic similarity law to drag data of NACA 65-series wings

Report presenting the use of Von Karman's two-dimensional transonic similarity law as applied to drag data of three different thickness wings with NACA 65-series sections and aspect ratios of 7.6 over a range of Mach numbers. The correlation was found to be satisfactory, with results better in the subsonic range than in the supersonic range.

A simulated altitude performance of a 25 1/2-inch-diameter annular-type turbojet combustor was performed to determine the effect of the distribution of basket-hole area on the altitude operational limits of the engine as imposed by the combustor.Total pressure drop was recorded, as well as the effect of fuel-nozzle flow capacity,and fuel-nozzle spray angle for one basket configuration. General observations were made for all configurations regarding flames, extent of afterburning, and durability of the baskets.

Low-Speed Investigation of a Small Triangular Wing of Aspect Ratio 2.0 3: Static Stability With Twin Vertical Fins

"Low-speed wind-tunnel tests were made of a triangular wing with two arrangements of twin vertical fins. With these twin fins mounted either symmetrically or wholly above the wing chord plane, approximately constant effectiveness in proportion to the fin size was obtained throughout the angle-of-attack range. The addition of these fins, however, resulted in a decrease in maximum lift and a reduction in static longitudinal stability at lift coefficients above 0.4" (p. 1).

Shielding studies at Mound Laboratory

Neutron shielding is done to protect workers from excessive radiation and to keep a low neutron background for research in neutron counting. To meet health standards the total neutron flux allowable is 150 n/cm/sec per eight hours, or 50 n/cm/sec per twenty-four hours. Literature values for the absorption coefficients of paraffin and water are considered, and some experimental data is presented which approximately confirm them. A description of barriers at Mound Laboratory is given. Plans for future work on slowing-down of fast nautrons and capture of slow neutrons are included.

A wind tunnel investigation was conducted to determine the performance of a turbine operating as an integral part of a turbojet engine. Data was obtained while the engine was running over full operable range of speeds at various altitudes and flight mach numbers, and with four nozzles of different outlet areas.A maximum turbine efficiency of 0.875 was obtained at altitude of 15 thousand feet, Mach number 0.53, and corrected turbine speed of 5900 rpm.
