Structural and Thematic Development in the Novels of F. Scott Fitzgerald (open access)

Structural and Thematic Development in the Novels of F. Scott Fitzgerald

In dealing with the individual works, I have attempted to analyze the structural element first, and then to deduce the novel's meaning, or theme, making use, wherever it is possible, of the results of the analysis of structure. In addition, I have attempted to reveal the development of certain themes from one novel to another, and certain developments in characterization and general design. I have attempted to reveal the relationship of the structure and thematic aspects of the individual works to Fizgerald's work as a whole. Finally, I have attempted to demonstrate Fitzgerald's relationship with certain of this peers and forebears in the American novel.

A Study of Superstitions and Customs Affecting Health Practices Among the People of Starr County, Texas (open access)

A Study of Superstitions and Customs Affecting Health Practices Among the People of Starr County, Texas

Because superstitions and customs of the people of Starr County, Texas, have a bearing on health practices that affect their well-being, the purpose of this study is to explain the deep-rooted superstitions and customs adhered to by the settlers. In order to understand more fully the cultural factors which relate to health, it is necessary to study the lives and customs of the people of Starr County. An effort has been made to look at their problems, not from a critical standpoint, but from the standpoint of helping the people and of viewing them sympathetically. A keen interest in the health practices of the people of Starr County, Texas, originated in tracing superstitions and customs in relation to the backward condition of these people. This thesis is a report of the writer's findings of those superstitions and customs as viewed by one who has lived in the county for six years.

Stylistic Evolution of the Motet Through the Sixteenth Century with Emphasis on the Style of Palestrina (open access)

Stylistic Evolution of the Motet Through the Sixteenth Century with Emphasis on the Style of Palestrina

The mass and the motet are the most important musical components of the Catholic liturgy. The development of vocal polyphony in the Medieval Period culminated in the perfection of these forms in the sixteenth century. The purpose of this thesis is to give an account of the development of religious monody and polyphony that led to the inception of the motet in the early part of the thirteenth century; to show the development of the motet through the sixteenth century; to give a more detailed analysis of the style of Palestrina; and to emphasize the analysis with a stylistic examination of a Palestrina motet.

Supersonic Wave Drag of Nonlifting Sweptback Tapered Wings With Mach Lines Behind the Line of Maximum Thickness

Note presenting a theoretical investigation of the supersonic wave drag of nonlifting sweptback tapered wings with thin symmetrical double-wedge airfoil sections with maximum thickness at 50 percent chord. For wings of equal root bending stress and given sweepback, taper increases the wing wave-drag coefficient at Mach numbers.

Theme and Mutations (open access)

Theme and Mutations

The purpose of this composition is to demonstrate the creative stimuli offered a composer by The Schillinger System of Musical Composition. To illustrate this creative stimuli offered a composer, the writer has composed an extremely diverse, yet homogenous musical continuity from the elements contained in an eight measure theme. The sections of this composition are titled mutations, for though they are all inherently related to the theme, this relationship often appears fortuitous. The term variation usually implies structural alterations that are readily apparent.

Theoretical Wave Drag and Lift of Thin Supersonic Ring Airfoils

Note presenting an approximate linearized solution for the wave drag and lift of an airfoil generated by rotating a thin supersonic profile about an axis parallel, or nearly parallel, to its chord. The aerodynamic coefficients are obtained from a surface distribution of sources, of strengths proportional to the local airfoil slopes, about a cylinder whose radius and chord equal those of the original ring airfoil.

To Determine the Extent to Which the Denton County Library is Meeting the Recreational Reading Interests of the Elementary Pupils of the Rural Schools of Denton County, Texas (open access)

To Determine the Extent to Which the Denton County Library is Meeting the Recreational Reading Interests of the Elementary Pupils of the Rural Schools of Denton County, Texas

"In order to determine the extent to which the Denton County Free Library is meeting the needs of the elementary school children for recreational reading, an analysis was made of the reading interests of the elementary-school children of twelve common school districts of Denton County, Texas. The ages of these children ranged from nine to fourteen years. A second analysis was made by checking various acceptable authors in the field of children's reading interests as read by the children in this group and age level. This information was secured by having each child in the schools check the items listed in a school survey sheet. This information was tabulated and the results are shown in tables presented in Chapter III. A third analysis was made of library material found in the reading lists that were supplied by the county; and lastly, a comparison was made of the results of the last analysis with the two preceding ones." -- leaf 3
