The following report is based on the findings of a Geological Survey party who spent one week during July 1944 in western North Carolina testing some of the Pegmatites and one Kyanite mine of that region for radioactive minerals.

The following report is the result of a reconnaissance of the black shales of the Eastern United States in the summer of 1944. The purpose of this reconnaissance was to determine the radioactivity of the shales, specifically for uranium and thorium.

The following interim report provides information on the radioactivity discovered in the Chattanooga shale that consist of a basal sandstone, a lower black shale, a middle gray shale, and an upper black shale.

Report discussing a fluorimeter intended for use in the fluorimetric method of analysis for uranium. This particular fluorimeter measures fluorescence by transmission rather than by the usual "reflection" methods.

The following report covers investigations on radioactivity in copper-bearing iron oxide mineralization fissures and fractures in narrow zones within Kobuk River Valley, Alaska.

From abstract: "A method is described whereby aluminum in phosphate rock is determined by the fluorescence of aluminum hydroxyquinolate in chloroform solution."

Abstract: Secondary minerals of the uranite group occur in dense quartz veins and in altered aplitic granite along and near the crest of the east-trending ridge about one mile west of Clancy, Montana. Brief examination suggests that the radioactive minerals are erratically distributed, but a more thorough study of the area will be made by the Geological Survey during the coming field season.

Abstract: Some modifications of current techniques for preparing nuclear plates for mineralogical studies are described. A method of mounting nuclear-track stripping film on thin sections is given. Illustrations are presented of the application of these techniques to the study of the radioactivity of powdered rocks, minerals, or thin sections.

Report discussing the study of radioactivity and mineralogy of 24 placer concentrate samples from the Fortymile district of east-central Alaska. Only two samples showed significant radioactivity due to uraniferous thorianite. Sections include geology, and radiometric and mineralogic studies.

Abstract: "As a result of inquiries by prospectors in 1948 concerning radioactive ores in the vicinity of Jakolof Bay on the Kenai Peninsula in southern Alaska, the Geological Survey conducted a brief investigation during 1949. No radioactive material was found. Possibly a chromite stockpile in this locality was mistaken for pitchblades."

Report discussing a study in which "the CO₂ combined as calcite in carbonate-bearing apatites has been distinguished from that combined as carbonate-apatite, or present in some form other than calcite, by use of X-ray powder patterns, differential thermal analyses, and differential solubility tests."

Report discussing geophysical observations in parts of the Grants district of McKinley County, New Mexico. This study had the "dual objective of investigating the unusual occurrence of negative aeromagnetic anomalies in close association with airborne radioactivity anomalies, and of investigating other geophysical methods which might assist directly or indirectly in the search for uranium ores in the Grants district."

From Abstract: "This paper presents the methods of chemical analysis that were used to aid in mineralogic studies of Colorado Plateau carnotite for purposes of determining age of materials."

From abstract: During 1951 about 60 square miles of the Capitol Reef area, Wayne County, Utah, the northern end of the Waterpocket Fold, was mapped by plane-table methods on a scale of 1:62, 500. Formations, with an approximate aggregate thickness of 3, 200 feet, range from the Coconino sandstone of Permian age to the Navajo sandstone of Jurassic (?) age. About 35 linear miles of Shinarump conglomerate of Triassic age was examined in detail. Cliffs 900 to 1, 000 feet high form the west face of Capitol Reef, which is on the east and northeast flanks of a structural and topographic dome, The uranium deposits are in the basal part of the Shinarump conglomerate. Zippeite and metatorbernite are the uranium minerals found, and are associated with copper minerals, carbonaceous matter, clay beds, a thick bleached zone at the top of the Moenkopi formation, and channels or scours in the top of the Moenkopi. The highest radioactivity is in a clay bed at the base of the Shinarump conglomerate, and was detected at 7 localities between Grand Wash and Capitol Gorge, at the Birch Spring prospect in Moonie Draw, and at the Oyler mine in Grand Wash.
