Photocopy of a letter from Nancy Reynolds, Project Coordinator of North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to Allison Perkins, Amon Carter Museum. To discuss the upcoming newsletter that Reynolds would like to distribute in September but needs information from Perkins on the Charlie Russell presentation scheduled for October. As well as inform Perkins that the institute is planning to offer a retreat for the consortium members at Ghost Ranch Conference Center in Abiquiu, New Mexico from March 14 - 18, 1993, and requests some Georgia O'Keefee's slides for a short presentation at the conference.

LOADING AND ELUTION CHARACTERISTICS OF SOME NATURAL AND SYNTHETIC ZEOLITES (open access)

LOADING AND ELUTION CHARACTERISTICS OF SOME NATURAL AND SYNTHETIC ZEOLITES

The cation exchange characteristics of several commercially available zeolites were evaluated, Equilibrium loading characteristics and exchange capacities were determined experimentally in the binary systems cesium-lithium, cesium-- sodium, cesium--potassium, cesium-Tubidium, cesium -- hydrogen, cesium-- ammonium, strontium-- magnesium, strontium-- calcium, strontium-- barium, and strontium-- hydrogen for several zeolites. Exchangeable cation fractions in the equilibrium solutions were varied from 0.2 to 0.00001, while the total normality of the system constituents was held constant. Results were plotted as equivalent fraction of the traced cation on the zeolite at equilibrium vs. the fraction of traced cation remaining in the equilibrium solution. If an influent composition is known, and falls in the system listed above, zeolite column loading may be read directly in univalent-univalent or divalent-divalent systems. However, in the strontium-sodium or strontium-- hydrogen systems, a k value must be used because squared terms appear in the equilibrium expression as follows: 2 Na- zeolite plus or minus Sr-solution in equilibrium 2 Nasolution + Sr-zeolite, or k = (Sr-zeolite)(Na-solution)/ (Na-zeolite)2(Sr-solution). The k for a given cation is a function of zeolite loading with that cation. Several column 50% loading capacities were determined to randomly test the validity of the above curves to predict column capacities, Several columns …

TWO AUXILIARY CODES FOR USE WITH RENUPAK (open access)

TWO AUXILIARY CODES FOR USE WITH RENUPAK

Two IBM-7090 codes were written to aid the user of the neutron moments method code RENUPAK. One code computes and punches response function input cards for RENUPAK or NIOBE (another neutron transport code). The second code reads RENUPAK flux tapes and prints out a compact edit including dose rate as a function of distance. (auth)

Experimental observations and model calculations of impurity radiation in a plasma gun compact torus experiment (open access)

Experimental observations and model calculations of impurity radiation in a plasma gun compact torus experiment

Several types of radiation measurements were performed on the Beta II compact forms experiment. Among these are time integrated spectra ranging in wavelength from the vuv to the uv, time resolved bolometer measurements of radiation from the x-ray to the infrared, and time and wavelength resolved measurements of certain spectral lines. It is difficult to relate any one of these measurements to plasma parameters of interest such as temperature, density, or impurity content. In this report we compare the results of these, and other measurements with two simple models of the power balance in the plasma in order to estimate the effect of carbon and oxygen impurities on plasma lifetime.

Ocean Thermal Energy Conservation (OTEC) power system development (PDS) II. Preliminary design report (open access)

Ocean Thermal Energy Conservation (OTEC) power system development (PDS) II. Preliminary design report

This report documents the results and conclusions of the PDS II, Phase I, preliminary design of a 10 MWe OTEC power system, using enhanced plate type heat exchangers, and of representative 0.2 MWe test articles. It further provides the documentation (specifications, drawings, trade studies, etc.) resulting from the design activities. The data and discussions of the technical concepts are organized to respond to the PDS II, Phase II proposal evaluation criteria. This volume, which specifically addresses the three evaluation categories (heat exchangers, rotating machinery, and power system configuration and performance) is an integral part of the Phase II plans (proposal) which describe the technical approach to delivering test articles to OTEC-1. In addition, there is a section which addresses power system cost and net energy analysis and another which discusses the results of stainless steel feasibility studies. Supporting documentation is contained in two appendix volumes.

Thermal depletion of a geothermal reservoir with both fracture and pore permeability (open access)

Thermal depletion of a geothermal reservoir with both fracture and pore permeability

A method for estimating the useful lifetime of a reservoir in porous rock where the injection and production wells intersect a fracture system is presented. Equations were derived for the pore-fluid and fracture-fluid temperatures averaged over large regions of the geothermal field. Problems such as incomplete areal sweep and interfingering of cool and hot fluids are ignored. Approximate equations relating average temperatures to the heat flowing from rock to fluid were developed, and their use is justified by comparing the results with solutions of the exact equations. The equations for the temperature decline can be solved quickly. In the model, fractures are characterized by three parameters: aperture w, permeability k/sub fr/, and spacings between fractures D. For certain values of these parameters, cool reinjected fluid in fractures may reach the production wells long before all the warm pore fluid has been tapped, shortening the useful lifetime of the field. The traditional (and important) problems of reservoir engineering, flow rate determination, drawdown, sweep patterns, etc. were ignored. Thus the results are most useful in providing a correction factor which can be applied to lifetime estimates obtained from a detailed simulation of a field assuming porous rock. That correction factor is plotted …

Uniform laser ablative acceleration of targets at 10/sup 14/ W/cm/sup 2/ (open access)

Uniform laser ablative acceleration of targets at 10/sup 14/ W/cm/sup 2/

We present the first detailed investigations of the ablative acceleration of planar targets while simultaneously using high irradiance (10/sup 14/ W/cm/sup 2/), large focal diameters (1 mm) and long laser pulse duration (3 nsec). Included are measurements of target preheat, ablation pressures and uniformity achieved under these conditions. Targets were accelerated to high velocities with velocity profile uniformity approaching that required for high gain pellet implosions.
