Oral History Interview with John Bremyer, August 9, 2005 transcript

Oral History Interview with John Bremyer, August 9, 2005

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with John Bremyer. Bremyer applied for a commission in the Navy in early 1942 and went on active duty in May. His first duty assignment was in Florida conducting anti-submarine warfare. From there, he reported for duty at the Fleet Post Office in New Orleans. He eventually ended up working in the office of the Chief of Naval Operations in Washington composing regulations for secret message delivery. Then, Bremyer worked for the Secretary of the Navy. One unusual assignment Bremyer carried out was to deliver the US flag flown from Commodore Matthew Perry’s flagship he was aboard when he went to Japan in 1854 to the surrender ceremony aboard USS Missouri (BB-63) in Tokyo Bay. After the war, Bremyer returned to law school.

Sensitivity Analysis of Differential-Algebraic Equations and Partial Differential Equations (open access)

Sensitivity Analysis of Differential-Algebraic Equations and Partial Differential Equations

Sensitivity analysis generates essential information for model development, design optimization, parameter estimation, optimal control, model reduction and experimental design. In this paper we describe the forward and adjoint methods for sensitivity analysis, and outline some of our recent work on theory, algorithms and software for sensitivity analysis of differential-algebraic equation (DAE) and time-dependent partial differential equation (PDE) systems.

Vlasov Simulations of Trapping and Inhomogeneity in Raman Scattering (open access)

Vlasov Simulations of Trapping and Inhomogeneity in Raman Scattering

We study stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in laser-fusion conditions with the Eulerian Vlasov code ELVIS. Back SRS from homogeneous plasmas occurs in subpicosecond bursts and far exceeds linear theory. Forward SRS and re-scatter of back SRS are also observed. The plasma wave frequency downshifts from the linear dispersion curve, and the electron distribution shows flattening. This is consistent with trapping and reduces the Landau damping. There is some acoustic ({omega} {proportional_to} {kappa}) activity and possibly electron acoustic scatter. Kinetic ions do not affect SRS for early times but suppress it later on. SRS from inhomogeneous plasmas exhibits a kinetic enhancement for long density scale lengths. More scattering results when the pump propagates to higher as opposed to lower density.

Lessons Learned During Construction and Test of the GLAST Large Area Telescope Tracker (open access)

Lessons Learned During Construction and Test of the GLAST Large Area Telescope Tracker

The GLAST Large Area Telescope (LAT) is a satellite gamma-ray observatory designed to explore the sky in the energy range 20MeV {approx_equal} 300GeV, a region populated by emissions from the most energetic and mysterious objects in the cosmos, like black holes, AGNs, supernovae, gamma-ray bursters. The silicon-strip tracker is the heart of the photon detection system, and with its 80 m{sup 2} of surface and almost 1M channels is one of the largest silicon tracker ever built. Its construction, to be completed by 2006, and the stringent requirements from operation in space, represent a major technological challenge. Critical design, technology and system engineering issues are addressed in this paper, as well as the approach being followed during construction, test and qualification of the LAT silicon tracker.

Dynamic X-Y Crosstalk / Aliasing Errors of Multiplexing BPMs (open access)

Dynamic X-Y Crosstalk / Aliasing Errors of Multiplexing BPMs

Multiplexing Beam Position Monitors are widely used for their simplicity and inherent drift cancellation property. These systems successively feed the signals of (typically four) RF pickups through one single detector channel. The beam position is calculated from the demultiplexed base band signal. However, as shown below, transverse beam motion results in positional aliasing errors due to the finite multiplexing frequency. Fast vertical motion, for example, can alias into an apparent, slow horizontal position change.

Population of Nuclei Via 7Li-Induced Binary Reactions (open access)

Population of Nuclei Via 7Li-Induced Binary Reactions

The authors have investigated the population of nuclei formed in binary reactions involving {sup 7}Li beams on targets of {sup 160}Gd and {sup 184}W. The {sup 7}Li + {sup 184}W data were taken in the first experiment using the LIBERACE Ge-array in combination with the STARS Si {Delta}E-E telescope system at the 88-Inch Cyclotron of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. By using the Wilczynski binary transfer model, in combination with a standard evaporation model, they are able to reproduce the experimental results. This is a useful method for predicting the population of neutron-rich heavy nuclei formed in binary reactions involving beams of weakly bound nuclei and will be of use in future spectroscopic studies.

Beam Based HOM Analysis of Accelerating Structures at the TESLA Test Facility Linac (open access)

Beam Based HOM Analysis of Accelerating Structures at the TESLA Test Facility Linac

The beam emittance in future linear accelerators for high energy physics and SASE-FEL applications depends highly on the field performance in the accelerating structures, i.e. the damping of higher order modes (HOM). Besides theoretical and laboratory analysis, a beam based analysis technique was established [1] at the TESLA Test Facility (TTF) linac. It uses a charge modulated beam of variable modulation frequency to excite dipole modes. This causes a modulation of the transverse beam displacement, which is observed at a downstream BPM and associated with a direct analysis of the modes at the HOM-couplers. A brief introduction of eigenmodes of a resonator and the concept of the wake potential is given. Emphasis is put on beam instrumentation and signal analysis aspects, required for this beam based HOM measurement technique.
