Oral History Interview with Joseph Wallingford, August 3, 2005

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Joseph Wallingford. Wallingford enlisted in the Navy in August, 1942. He received very little training before being assigned to USS LST-452 in Washington. They first went to Hawaii, then Australia before getting involved in the campaign for New Guinea. In the Philippines, at Leyte, Wallingford was aboard when the ship received 8 enemy shells while beached and unloading. Toward the end of the war, Wallingford was assigned to USS Kermit Roosevelt (ARG-16) and rode it to China after the war ended. Upon returning from China, Wallingford was discharged in January, 1946.

Performance Demonstration Program Plan for Nondestructive Assay of Drummed Wastes for the TRU Waste Characterization Program (open access)

Performance Demonstration Program Plan for Nondestructive Assay of Drummed Wastes for the TRU Waste Characterization Program

The Performance Demonstration Program (PDP) for Nondestructive Assay (NDA) is a test program designed to yield data on measurement system capability to characterize drummed transuranic (TRU) waste generated throughout the Department of Energy (DOE) complex. The tests are conducted periodically and provide a mechanism for the independent and objective assessment of NDA system performance and capability relative to the radiological characterization objectives and criteria of the Office of Characterization and Transportation (OCT). The primary documents requiring an NDA PDP are the Waste Acceptance Criteria for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WAC), which requires annual characterization facility participation in the PDP, and the Quality Assurance Program Document (QAPD). This NDA PDP implements the general requirements of the QAPD and applicable requirements of the WAC. Measurement facilities must demonstrate acceptable radiological characterization performance through measurement of test samples comprised of pre-specified PDP matrix drum/radioactive source configurations. Measurement facilities are required to analyze the NDA PDP drum samples using the same procedures approved and implemented for routine operational waste characterization activities. The test samples provide an independent means to assess NDA measurement system performance and compliance per criteria delineated in the NDA PDP Plan. General inter-comparison of NDA measurement system performance among DOE …

Ultra-high accuracy optical testing: creating diffraction-limitedshort-wavelength optical systems (open access)

Ultra-high accuracy optical testing: creating diffraction-limitedshort-wavelength optical systems

Since 1993, research in the fabrication of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) optical imaging systems, conducted at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), has produced the highest resolution optical systems ever made. We have pioneered the development of ultra-high-accuracy optical testing and alignment methods, working at extreme ultraviolet wavelengths, and pushing wavefront-measuring interferometry into the 2-20-nm wavelength range (60-600 eV). These coherent measurement techniques, including lateral shearing interferometry and phase-shifting point-diffraction interferometry (PS/PDI) have achieved RMS wavefront measurement accuracies of 0.5-1-{angstrom} and better for primary aberration terms, enabling the creation of diffraction-limited EUV optics. The measurement accuracy is established using careful null-testing procedures, and has been verified repeatedly through high-resolution imaging. We believe these methods are broadly applicable to the advancement of short-wavelength optical systems including space telescopes, microscope objectives, projection lenses, synchrotron beamline optics, diffractive and holographic optics, and more. Measurements have been performed on a tunable undulator beamline at LBNL's Advanced Light Source (ALS), optimized for high coherent flux; although many of these techniques should be adaptable to alternative ultraviolet, EUV, and soft x-ray light sources. To date, we have measured nine prototype all-reflective EUV optical systems with NA values between 0.08 and 0.30 (f/6.25 …

Phase II Audit Report - Energy & Water Audits of LLNL Facilities (open access)

Phase II Audit Report - Energy & Water Audits of LLNL Facilities

This report describes Phase II of a project conducted for the Mechanical Utilities Division (UTel), Energy Management Program at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) by Architectural Energy Corporation (AEC). The overall project covers energy efficiency and water conservation auditing services for 215 modular and prefabricated buildings at LLNL. The primary goal of this project is to demonstrate compliance with DOE Order 430.2A, Contractor Requirements Document section 2.d (2) Document, to demonstrate annual progress of at least 10 percent toward completing energy and water audits of all facilities. Although this project covers numerous buildings, they are all similar in design and use. The approach employed for completing audits for these facilities involves a ''model-similar building'' approach. In the model-similar building approach, similarities between groups of buildings are established and quantified. A model (or test case) building is selected and analyzed for each model-similar group using a detailed DOE-2 simulation. The results are extended to the group of similar buildings based on careful application of quantified similarities, or ''extension measures''. This approach leverages the relatively minor effort required to evaluate one building in some detail to a much larger population of similar buildings. The facility wide energy savings potential was calculated for …

Optimization of Xenon Biosensors for Detection of ProteinInteractions (open access)

Optimization of Xenon Biosensors for Detection of ProteinInteractions

Hyperpolarized 129Xe NMR can detect the presence of specific low-concentration biomolecular analytes by means of the xenon biosensor, which consists of a water-soluble, targeted cryptophane-A cage that encapsulates xenon. In this work we use the prototypical biotinylated xenon biosensor to determine the relationship between the molecular composition of the xenon biosensor and the characteristics of protein-bound resonances. The effects of diastereomer overlap, dipole-dipole coupling, chemical shift anisotropy, xenon exchange, and biosensor conformational exchange on protein-bound biosensor signal were assessed. It was found that optimal protein-bound biosensor signal can be obtained by minimizing the number of biosensor diastereomers and using a flexible linker of appropriate length. Both the linewidth and sensitivity of chemical shift to protein binding of the xenon biosensor were found to be inversely proportional to linker length.

WSRC-TR-2003-00130

High level waste at the SRS F- and H-Area Tank Farms consists of both sludge and supernate fractions. Supernate contains soluble species. Sludge contains both insoluble species and entrained supernate. The nature and extent of contamination present on waste generated during operation of the F- and H-Area Tank Farms is a function of the tank, the nature of the job generating the waste, variability in waste handling techniques, and other factors. Historically, supernate-contaminated waste had been segregated and manifested as supernate waste. A single, comprehensive characterization for supernate has been developed previously (Reference 4). Sludge-contaminated waste has been manifested by combining sludge and supernate waste streams to account for entrained supernate present in sludge. Separate sludge waste stream characterizations have been developed for each of the F- and H-Area Tank Farms (Ref. 1 and 2). Low-activity waste (LAW) consists of both sludge and supernate fractions. Routine LAW is waste that has a maximum dose rate of 50mrem/hr at 5cm for Sealands and 35mrem/hr at 5 cm for Roll-Offs. However, it is intended that routine, low-activity waste not be segregated; therefore, individual low-activity waste cuts may consist of items contaminated with either supernate or sludge in the same container. Historical waste …

An Index for the Dirac Operator on D3 Brane withBackground Fluxes (open access)

An Index for the Dirac Operator on D3 Brane withBackground Fluxes

We study the problem of instanton generated superpotentials in Calabi-Yau orientifold compactifications directly in type IIB string theory. To this end, we derive the Dirac equation on a Euclidean D3 brane in the presence of background fluxes. We propose an index which governs whether the generation of a superpotential in the effective 4d theory by D3 brane instantons is possible. Applying the formalism to various classes of examples, including the K3 x T{sup 2}/Z{sub 2} orientifold, in the absence and presence of fluxes, we show that our results are consistent with conclusions attainable via duality from an M-theory analysis.
