Spent fuel performance data: An analysis of data relevant to the NNWSI Project (open access)

Spent fuel performance data: An analysis of data relevant to the NNWSI Project

This paper summarizes the physical and chemical properties of spent light water reactor fuel that might influence its performance as a waste form under geologic disposal conditions at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. Results obtained on the dissolution testing of spent fuel conducted by the NNWSI Project are presented and discussed. Work published by other programs, in particular those of Canada and Sweden, are reviewed and compared with the NNWSI testing results. An attempt is made to relate all of the results to a common basis of presentation and to rationalize apparent conflicts between sets of results obtained under different experimental conditions.

Lateral continuity of sorptive mineral zones underlying Yucca Mountain, Nevada (open access)

Lateral continuity of sorptive mineral zones underlying Yucca Mountain, Nevada

Mineralogical investigations at Yucca Mountain in southwestern Nevada are part of the characterization of this site for a potential nuclear waste repository. This report analyzes compositional data obtained by x-ray powder diffraction for several hundred samples from fourteen drill holes in the vicinity of Yucca Mountain. Mineralization is compared with the functional stratigraphy for the region. Three major zeolitized intervals below the Topopah Spring Member of the Paintbrush Tuff are of particular interest because of their potential to retard the transport of dissolved radionuclides. No significant lateral trends in total zeolitization within these units are noted in the neighborhood of the Exploration Block, but there are trends in the abundances of the individual zeolites. Much local variation that cannot be explained by either vertical or lateral trends is observed.

Review of International Geothermal Activities and Assessment of US Industry Opportunites: Final Report (open access)

Review of International Geothermal Activities and Assessment of US Industry Opportunites: Final Report

This report contains detailed summaries, with bibliographies, of past, present, and planned geothermal development in 71 selected countries and areas. The report gives a pretty good description of types of work that had been done in each country by the mid 1980s, but does not tell much about which geothermal-provider country did the work. There are maps for most of the countries. There are numbers for market factors, but not for estimated geothermal potential. The information in this document has been superceded by the country summaries in the World Geothermal Congress Transactions of 1995, 2000, and 2005. This report was prepared by Meridian Corporation, Alexandria, VA. (DJE 2005)

Atlas of Atomic Spectral Lines of Neptunium Emitted by Inductively Coupled Plasma (open access)

Atlas of Atomic Spectral Lines of Neptunium Emitted by Inductively Coupled Plasma

Optical emission spectra from high-purity Np-237 were generated with a glovebox-enclosed inductively coupled plasma (ICP) source. Spectra covering the 230-700 nm wavelength range are presented along with general commentary on the methodology used in collecting the data. The Ames Laboratory Nuclear Safeguards and Security Program has been charged with the task of developing optical spectroscopic methods to analyze the composition of spent nuclear fuels. Such materials are highly radioactive even after prolonged 'cooling' and are chemically complex. Neptunium (Np) is a highly toxic by-product of nuclear power generation and is found, in low abundance, in spent nuclear fuels. This atlas of the optical emission spectrum of Np, as produced by an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) spectroscopic source, is part of a general survey of the ICP emission spectra of the actinide elements. The ICP emission spectrum of the actinides originates almost exclusively from the electronic relaxation of excited, singly ionized species. Spectral data on the Np ion emission spectrum (i.e., the Np II spectrum) have been reported by Tomkins and Fred [1] and Haaland [2]. Tomkins and Fred excited the Np II spectrum with a Cu spark discharge and identified 114 Np lines in the 265.5 - 436.3 nm spectral …

Liquid Fuels from Microalgae (open access)

Liquid Fuels from Microalgae

The goal of the DOE/SERI Aquatic Species Program is to develop the technology to produce gasoline and diesel fuels from microalgae. Microalgae can accumulate large quantities of lipids and can thrive in high salinity water, which currently has no other use.

High-Frequency Limit of Longitudinal Impedance (open access)

High-Frequency Limit of Longitudinal Impedance

A method of iterations which takes into account finite widths of resonances is developed and used to calculate the longitudinal impedance for a cylindrical cavity with side pipes. In the high-frequency limit the dependence of the real part of the impedance on the frequency is omega^(-1/2) in agreement with the estimate for the average impedance obtained by G. Do^me.

Perturbation Method for Calculation of Narrow-Band Impedance and Trapped Modes (open access)

Perturbation Method for Calculation of Narrow-Band Impedance and Trapped Modes

An iterative method for calculation of the narrow-band impedance is described for a system with a small variation in boundary conditions, so that the variation can be considered as a perturbation. The results are compared with the degeneracy of the spectrum of an unperturbed system. The method also can be applied to transverse impedance calculations.

Development of highly polished, grazing incidence mirrors for synchrotron radiation beam lines at SSRL (open access)

Development of highly polished, grazing incidence mirrors for synchrotron radiation beam lines at SSRL

New platinum-coated grazing incidence mirrors with low surface roughnesses have been developed to focus bending magnet radiation from the SSRL/SLAC SPEAR storage ring on the entrance slits of two Beam Line VIII grating monochromators. The first mirror in the toroidal grating monochromator (TGM) branch is a cooled SiC cylinder capable of absorbing synchrotron radiation power levels of up to 260 watts without excessive distortion. This mirror deflects the beam vertically through a 12/degree/ angle and focuses it sagitally on the TGM entrance slit plane. The second TGM optical element is a fused-silica spherical mirror with a large radius of curvature that deflects the beam vertically through an additional 12/degree/ and focuses it tangentially with 3/1 demagnification. The first mirror in our spherical grating branch is a 5/degree/-vertically deflecting, cooled SiC toroid designed to focus tangentially on the monochromator entrance slits and sagitally in the exit slits. A 4/degree/-deflecting fused silica mirror is used after the exit sites in each beam line to refocus on to the sample. For this application a thin cylinder is bent to approximate an ellipsoid. The mirrors are now installed at SSRL and performance measurements are planned. Qualitatively the focus of the TGM optics at the …
