Interspersed Color Blend Lithography (open access)

Interspersed Color Blend Lithography

Interspersed color blend lithography is a technique that facilitates simultaneous multi-colored printing. The problem of color blending was to gain control over the process and explore a variety of uses. The research was entirely experimental. Interspersed color blend lithography is a unique process that allows for the application of any number of colors at one time, and complete freedom in their placement. The results of the investigation produced a process that is at once predictable, simple and immediate.

Adding and Subtracting Color in the Painting and Serigraphic Processes: A Development of Consistency in Two Art Media (open access)

Adding and Subtracting Color in the Painting and Serigraphic Processes: A Development of Consistency in Two Art Media

This is a method in which designs as a whole are not pre-planned or pre-arranged, but are developed by applying layers of color. This is an additive method for obvious reasons, and it is subtractive because shapes can be covered with opaque paint or very intense stain. Transparent layers of color applied over existing colors cause hue changes, and the process creates subtleties resulting from one color showing through another.

Combining Silkscreen, Drawing, and Painting on Canvas (open access)

Combining Silkscreen, Drawing, and Painting on Canvas

It is the purpose of this study to visually and technically explore the combination of the direct methods of drawing and painting and the more indirect process of silkscreen printing on canvas. The flexibility of the three technical areas- silkscreen, drawing, and painting- proved to make the combination more feasible.

A Study of Food Product Recalls and the Development of Guidelines for the Construction of Recall Programs for Small Food Processors (open access)

A Study of Food Product Recalls and the Development of Guidelines for the Construction of Recall Programs for Small Food Processors

This study was concerned with the capability of food processors to conduct a product recall, when necessary, with the least time and cost expenditures. An evaluation was made of the effectiveness of the procedures, policies, and organization by which food processors have conducted or would conduct a product recall. Based upon this assessment, a model product recall program was designed to enhance the ability of food processors to conduct product recalls more efficiently. The study concludes that product recalls are very costly to conduct, and, therefore, every effort should be undertaken to prevent situations from occurring which require product recalls. The use of stringent quality control procedures and packaging improvements are thus recommended. Food processors are encouraged to adopt product recall programs in order to reduce the cost of conducting a product recall. If food processors do not take the initiative in these areas, consumerists will likely continue to pressure Congress for more stringent federal regulation of the food industry.

Effects of Nutrient Media on Growth and Morphology of Azotobacter Vinelandii (open access)

Effects of Nutrient Media on Growth and Morphology of Azotobacter Vinelandii

The work described in this thesis was undertaken to study the reasons why Azotobacter vinelandii ATCC 12837 after incubation in Burk's nitrogen-free liquid will not form as many colonies when plated on Difco Tryptic Soy Agar as when planted on Burk's nitrogen-free agar. The difference in growth of A. vinelandii on the two agars was established by performing viable cell-plate counts. The difference in growth was most apparent at 24-hours incubation of the Burk's liquid-media cultures. Phase contrast microscopic observations of Tryptic Soy media cultures of A. vinelandii disclosed the regular formation of fungoid cells at early stages of growth of the bacteria, 18 to 24 hours.

The Internship Function of Equity Stock Theaters (open access)

The Internship Function of Equity Stock Theaters

this investigation dealt with the problem student actors confront in making a transition from educational to professional theater due to inadequate or insufficient training. A mail survey was conducted with 110 Equity stock theaters to determine whether or not those theaters serve an internship function to offer additional training and assist the beginning actor in his transition period. The introduction considers professional attitudes toward educational theater and the subsequent need for internship. The second and third chapters discuss the construction of the mailed questionnaires and the more significant responses. The last chapter concludes from the 57.3 per cent response that Equity stock theaters constitute an important but limited source for the student actor to learn and practice the arts of the theater.

Kenneth Burke's Concept of Identification as Applied to Selected Speeches of Edmund Sixtus Muskie (open access)

Kenneth Burke's Concept of Identification as Applied to Selected Speeches of Edmund Sixtus Muskie

The purpose of this study has been to determine the ways Edmund S. Muskie used identification in five speeches which he delivered during his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1971. Kenneth Burke's rhetorical concepts of identification and combustiality are used to analyze the speeches. Chapter I includes an introduction to Muskie's political life and an examination of the basic principles of Burke's rhetorical philosophy of indentification. Chapter II delves into the nature of Muskie, the man. Chapter III examines the texts of the speeches and reveals the strategies of identification which he used. Chapter IV summarizes Musikie's use of Burkeian identification in relation to himself and the times.

Human Phosphoglucose Isomerase: Isolation and Characterization of Wild Type and the Singh Allozyme

A procedure was developed for the rapid isolation of human phosphoglucose isomerase by substrate-induced elution from cellulose phosphate. The high degree of selectivity of the elution provided homogenous enzyme from erythrocytes after a purification of approximately 30,000-fold with a recovery of approximately 70%. The enzyme was also isolated from other human tissues by a similar procedure.

Topics in Category Theory (open access)

Topics in Category Theory

The purpose of this paper is to examine some basic topics in category theory. A category consists of a class of mathematical objects along with a morphism class having an associative composition. The paper is divided into two chapters. Chapter I deals with intrinsic properties of categories. Various "sub-objects" and properties of morphisms are defined and examples are given. Chapter II deals with morphisms between categories called functors and the natural transformations between functors. Special types of functors are defined and examples are given.

Effect of Light and Other Environmental Factors on Growth and Carotenogenesis of Corynebacterium Species Strain 7E1C (open access)

Effect of Light and Other Environmental Factors on Growth and Carotenogenesis of Corynebacterium Species Strain 7E1C

This investigation studies effects of environmental factors on growth and carotenogenesis in Corynebacterium strain 7ElC. Changes in pH were found to effect growth more than carotenogenesis. However, certain nutrients or long incubation periods stimulated carotenoid formation more than growth. Dark conditions in a mineral salts-glucose medium stimulated growth, but minimized carotenogenesis. Tryptic soy broth or yeast extract elicited carotenogenesis in darkness. Although brief light exposure during inoculation was photoinductive, continuous exposure to light following inoculation was required for maximum pigment synthesis. Dark grown stationary phase cells required 24-hours of light for maximum pigment synthesis. Chloramphenicol inhibition of carotenogenesis in dark grown cells exposed to light showed that enzymes needed for carotenoid synthesis were absent from dark grown cultures.

A Study of Press Freedom in South Africa (open access)

A Study of Press Freedom in South Africa

The problem of the study was to analyze conditions of the South African press, including effects of apartheid legislation on the free flow of information. The method of research was mail questionnaire to editors of twenty-two South African daily newspapers. The study showed that the South African press is restricted by legislation and additional laws are expected. Other information from the study includes the following: at least four main laws impede the free flow of information; the press has ready access to government officials; Die Burger and The Star are considered the most influential newspapers; and Prime Minister Vorster's recent advice that the press "put your house in order" seems aimed largely at key English-language newspapers.
