Alto Requiem is a requiem mass for contralto, chorus, and organ. Several unifying elements have been used throughout the composition. Most of the homophonic texture is limited to quartal and secundal structures. The melodic material is also predominantly quartal and secundal. Key relationships between and within movements are limited to related major and minor modes, modes a major or minor second apart, and modes a fourth apart. Further unity is achieved by emplying motives from the chants of the Roman Missa pro defunctis. These chants are used in the vocal lines as well as in the organ accompaniment.

Concerto for Piano and Orchestra is a three-movement composition for solo piano and orchestra. The three movements follow the general pattern of fast-slow-fast, although the first movement includes some slow sections. There is no break in continuity between the second and third movements. The duration of the entire work is approximately nineteen minutes, the first movement equivalent in time to the second and third movements combined.

The purpose of this thesis is to isolate the techniques presently being used by composers and to define and explain these techniques. The thesis concludes with a series of studies based on these twentieth-century compositional techniques for high school students in the form of warm-up and technique materials. The purpose of this study was to devise a sequence of studies designed to acquaint band members with twentieth-century composition techniques found in contemporary band literature.

The purpose of this study was to present a comprehensive analysis of the acoustical properties of the trumpet mouthpiece. The first section will be concerned with the individual parts of the mouthpiece and their interrelationship. The second portion of the study will be the physical analysis of three commonly used trumpet mouthpieces. For this study, five examples of each size have been selected. The third section will present a tonal analysis of the selected mouthpieces. These investigative procedures will attempt to recognize any relationships between the individual mouthpieces and the resulting tones.

It is the intent of this study to describe the harmonic activity that is present in the tone of the alto saxophone and to compare the spectra of selected tones when the chamber of the mouthpiece is changed in size and shape. It is hoped that the following questions might be answered: 1. What does the harmonic spectrum of the alto saxophone contain in terms of harmonic activity and the relative intensities of these harmonics? 2. What basic changes in chamber shape and size have evolved from early models? 3. Is there an appreciable change in the envelope of harmonic activity when the mouthpiece chamber is altered in size and shape? 4. Is it possible for these changes to be used to explain common terminology of the musician in describing tone qualities?

On December 5, 1969, an experimental production of Neil Simon's A Star-Spangled Girl was presented at the Callier Hearing and Speech Center in Denton, Texas. On December 6, 1969, the production was repeated in the Studio Theatre on the North Texas State University campus in Denton, Texas. The production was experimental in that it was directed for a deaf audience.

The purpose of this study is to assess the relationship between job satisfaction and the level of city urbanization. Significant job satisfaction differences between employees in highly urban and in moderately urban cities are expected on the basis of past research. It is hypothesized that employees in moderately urban cities will have higher satisfaction scores than employees in highly urban cities. An affirmative finding would enhance the value of the relationships described in past research, and it would imply a basis for generalization of findings along a rural-urban continuum.

Mahler's use of recurring thematic and motivic elements is the topic under consideration in this paper. The subject was decided upon after a preliminary investigation into possible instances of the use of leitmotiv in Mahler's Symphony JI led to the conclusion that occurrences of that device are, at best, only matters of supposition. The study did reveal, however, a considerable number of themes and motives in Symphony 1I that could be traced directly to Symphony I. A logical question followed: Were there similar recurrences in any of the other symphonies? Further research indicated that such instances of cyclicism (a more concise synonym for "recurring themes and motives") were not only common, but were an important element in Mahler's style.

The purpose of this study was to investigate factors related to teaching listening in elementary school music and to make recommendations toward an ideal course of study in listening.

The purpose of this study is to determine, if possible, North Central Texas views or attitudes toward international relations. These attitudes will be compared to studies on Southern attitudes to determine any similarities or dissimilarities. Literature on Southwestern attitudes is sparse; therefore, all data will be compared with that compiled by political scientists on Southern attitudes.

The scope of this study is limited to Federal military occupation during the five years from 1865 to 1870. Only the interior counties, where a dense Negro population required the exercise of political and social responsibilities, will be considered in detail. A line from Wise through Bosque, Travis, Wilson, Karnes, and Goliad Counties to the coastal town of Corpus Christi would roughly separate interior from frontier posts.

Accurate identification is fundamental in any study of grasses by farmers, ranchers, range specialists, ecologists, or students interested in the changes taking place in the grass habitat. Frequently it is convenient, and sometimes it is necessary, to identify the grasses by their vegetative characters. Some are readily recognized at a glance by their habitat and certain characters well known to the experienced observer. In other cases, identification is more difficult; and, perhaps with a few, it is impossible to be certain of the species from vegetative characters. However, this may also be true when the characters of the floral parts alone are considered. The inflorescence, used in most keys and descriptions, is often available only for a short period of time. Identification by the characters of the vegetation can be used throughout the growing season, even if grazing or mowing has removed or prevented the development of the floral parts. There have been other studies of grass identification related to vegetative characters, but they have been local and have not covered North Central Texas. The development and refinement of FA has been adequately investigated with major emphasis on pathogenic microorganisms. The development of this technique has reduced both the time and number of biochemical tests necessary to identify a diversity of organisms. The organisms included are the protozoans, as described by Goldman (1953 and 1957) and by Ingram (1961), viruses, as reported by Liu (1955a) and Burgdorfer and Lackman (1960a), pathogenic bacteria which have been investigated by Moody, Goldman, and Thomason (1956), Moody and Winter (1959), Deason, Falcone, and Harris (1957) and Thomason, Cherry, and Moody (1957). Various fungi have been studied with FA by Kaufman and Brandt (1964), Kaufman and Kaplan (1961 and 1963) and Gordon (1958). Therefore, due to the success of the fluorescent antibody technique in many areas of microbiology in previous investigations, the logical assumption was that immunofluorescence might be incorporated into an efficient system in which a specific organism associated with fecal pollution, such as S. faecalis, could be rapidly identified. Based on this assumption, the feasibility of fluorescent antibody techniques, using S. faecalis was investigated as a means of rapid determination of bacterial pollution in water. The chansonnier held by the Biblioteca Casanatense in Rome, designated Codex 2856 (0. V. 208), is a handsome volume containing 123 polyphonic compositions in the style of the Franco-Flemish School, circa 1450 to 1400. Although no text beyond the incipit is found in the manuscript, the value of the source is enhanced by the names of the composers of 106 of the compositions. Volume one focuses on the manuscript, giving a physical description of the manuscript, recounting the history of the manuscript, and includes discussion of selected composers and a concordance. Volume two contains the music of the chansonnier Biblioteca casanatense 2856.

In making this study it is important to search for ways to enhance and, if possible, make detection of MMO signals simpler in order that this technique for obtaining FS measurements may be extended to other materials. This attempt to improve measurement techniques has resulted in a significant discovery: the eddy-current techniques described in detail in a later section which should allow MMO to be observed and sensitively measured in many additional solids. The second major thrust of the study has been to use the newly discovered eddy-current technique in obtaining the first indisputable observation of MMO in zinc.
