Translation of story of Raapa as told by Bunghon Suungnem. In this story, a tiger, angry at being duped by Koreng, eats him. Koreng's sisters vow to marry whoever kills the tiger, and the only one able to do it is Raapa. Jealous, the other men conspire to kill Raapa, but he survives two attempts and tricks them so that they drown. In the end Koreng's sisters kill Raapa.

A traditional story as told by Bunghon Suungnem. In this story, the parents of five sons used up all their wealth purchasing brides and so have nothing to bequeath to them. The father tells them to obey the eldest son and work together to dig up 500 rupees he had buried and distribute it equally. After a few months of digging they are unable to find it, so they ask the eldest son what to do. He has them level the field, draw new boundaries and cultivate it. He assigns the highest plot to the youngest brother, then the next to the next-youngest, and so on. (b) Their neighbors include two lazy men who never work, but live off their wives. One wife tells her husband (the less lazy of the two) to go fishing. Instead of fish, he brings back some gold he finds in the water, and threatens to beat his wife if she does not cook it. She exchanges the gold for food and clothing. The other neighbor and his wife do not prosper, as the husband refuses to work.

Beshot Khullar of Phaaidam village, Chandel, tells the story of Sumphaai leh Raangleen [Sumphaai and Raangleen]. The story was collected by Rengpu Rex Khullar and Harimohon Thounaojam at the NSF-funded storytelling festival in 2009. The narration was transcribed by Reverend Daniel Tholung. This recording is of the translation discussion between Shobhana Chelliah and Daniel Tholung at the UNT in 2010.

Transcript of an oral interview with Brigadier General Harry Bayne. Bayne joined the Army Air Corps as a private in September, 1941. By August, 1942, he had attained the rank of flying sergeant, but soon was commissioned a second lieutenant. His first assignement was ferrying airplanes to fields where pilots were training. Eventually, he was sent to India and flew missions carrying fuel over the Himalaya Mountains to bombers and other airplanes operating out of China. He flew sixty-three missions over the HUmp before the end of the war. After the war, he remained in a pilot training command. What follows is a conversation about the remainder of Bayne's career in the military. He flew more planes, closed air bases in Europe, took a young Prince Charles of England for a joy ride in a plane, etc. Bayne also discusses his role in the recovery of the hydrogen bomb that was aboard a B-52 that crashed off the coast of Spain in the Mediterranean Sea in 1966.

Transcript of an oral interview with Gilberto Mendez. Mendez's parents left Mexico in 1910 to escape the violence Mexican Revolution and relocated to San Antonio, Texas, where Gilberto was raised until the family moved back to Mexico during the Depression. When Mexico declared war on Germany in 1942, Mendez was drafted into the Mexican Army (Spanish: Erjecito Mexicano) for one year. Upon being discharged from the Mexican Army, Mendez was called up in the US where he volunteered for duty in the US Marine Corps. He trained in Sna Diego and then went to Hawaii. From there, he was attached as a replacement prior to the invasion of Iwo Jima. Mendez landed on Iwo Jima six days after the beginning of the invasion. Mendez then describes action on Iwo Jima in which he faced a banzai charge from Japanese infantry and shot twenty enemy soldiers. After about a week of combat on Iwo Jima, Mendez was wounded by an exploding mortar round and evacuated from the island to a hospital ship. He eventually made his way back to the US where he was discharged from the Marine Corps in November, 1945. Mendez then mentions that he did a little boxing …

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Joe Mason. Mason entered the Navy in September of 1944. He completed storekeeper school at Samson, New York. He trained and served on a PT boat throughout the war. They traveled to Samar, Philippines on 1 September 1945, which he describes his experiences. He was stationed at PT Base 17. The war was over by the time he traveled overseas. He discusses his time in Samar and witnessed the burning of the PT boats. He traveled to other Philippine Islands and was discharged in June of 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Perry Camp. Camp spent a year in Honolulu working as a high scaler, scaling cliffs and building ammunition dumps after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Camp was then drafted into the Navy in 1943. He was trained as a gunner’s mate and completed schooling for electrical and hydraulics. He served as an instructor on the 5-inch guns. His position was fuse center and sight center. He discusses his position on his ship and provides detail of the weapons. He describes witnessing the commissioning of the USS Hugh W. Hadley (DD-774) in November of 1944. He worked aboard the destroyer preparing it for the sea. They shipped out of San Diego in February of 1945. They participated in the Battle of Okinawa. Camp describes this experience, including the ship being hit by a Kamikaze plane. Camp was discharged sometime after the war ended.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Jeremiah Tuttle. Tuttle joined the Navy in January 1943 and trained at Great Lakes in gunnery and fire control. When complete, he reported aboard the USS Bache (DD-470) and they headed for the Aleutian Islands. He was also aboard the ship when it was attached to the 7th Fleet and operated around New Guinea. He shares several anecdotes of his time aboard and R&R in Australia. He was aboard when the invasion of the Philippines commenced. He returned to the US and attended another gunnery school and was aboard another ship headed for the Pacific when he received his discharge in March, 1946. He was recalled for the Korean War and served aboard the USS Alfred A. Cunningham (DD-752).

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with George Gibbons. Gibbons completed infantry training in the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M his freshman and sophomore years of college. In January of 1943 he gave up his exemption for college and volunteered for the Army. He completed the Army Special Training Program, and volunteered for the paratroopers. Gibbons completed jump school at Fort Benning, Georgia. He also completed Demolition School. He traveled with replacement paratroopers to England in April of 1944, and joined the 82nd Airborne Division. He participated in the Normandy landings in June, Operation Market Garden in August and the Battle of the Bulge in December. He shares details of his combat experiences. After the war ended, he remained in Germany on guard duty, and completed college courses in England and France. He returned home and was discharged in December of 1945.

This is a personal narrative by Muhammad Younas (a 60-year old male and retired factory worker) about a time when he was working in Karachi. Muhammad Younas talks about his life in Karachi, other community members who lived there, and some incidents that happened during that time. The other speaker present during this recording is Abdul Qayoum (a 60-year old male).

When the king asks the minister why he failed to copy the Quran correctly, the minister explains that he was distressed by an event that had recently taken place in his life. The narrator Abdul Qayum (a 60 year old male factory worker) is telling the story to Muhammad Younas (a retired male factory worker).
