The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Thomas C. Geary. Born 1 November 1917 in Victorville, California, Geary attended Calaveras high school in San Andreas graduating in 1935. In 1937, Geary graduated from junior college and enlisted in the Army Air Forces in April 1943 hoping to be a bombardier. After completing basic training at Kearns Army Air Base, Utah, he was sent to Utah State University in Logan and then Kingman, Arizona where he received gunnery training. He then went to Carlsbad, New Mexico where he was trained as a bombardier. Upon graduation he went to Mountain Home, Idaho for advanced training. Following this, he embarked from Travis Army Air Field for Nadzab, New Guinea. Upon arriving there 20 January 1945 he was assigned to the 307th Bomb Group (Heavy) flying B-24 bombers. He tells of bombing missions over various targets and recalls one mission when his plane was attacked by Japanese fighters and damaged by flak. Geary recalls the mission over Balikpapa, Borneo when he was seriously wounded by shell fragments. Upon returning to base he was taken to the hospital at Tacloban for treatment. The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Larry Delewski. Delewski joined the Navy around 1942. He attended gunnery school in Newport, Rhode Island and completed a program at the Naval Gun Factory for Advanced Hydraulics in Washington, D.C. In early 1944 he was then assigned to the USS Laffey (DD-724). He provides some details of the destroyer, including its weaponry. Delewski served as Mount Captain and was in charge of gun mount number three, located on the stern. They traveled to Normandy, France and were present for D-Day in June of 1944, supporting ground troops by firing over 1,000 rounds at targets including bridges, tanks and troop concentrations. They continued their support at Normandy through the Battle of Cherbourg. Upon receiving some damage to the ship, they traveled back to the United States. In late 1944 they traveled to the Philippines and participated in the Battle of Ormoc Bay. In April of 1945 they were involved in the Battle of Okinawa, where they were heavily attacked by Japanese kamikazes. He was discharged some time in 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Robert Pratt. Pratt joined the Navy while in college and was finally called to active duty in July 1943. Then he went to midshipman school at Northwestern University, finishing in May 1944 with a commission. His first assignment was to USS LST-781, being assembled in Pittsburgh. Pratt tells several stories about being aboard USS LST-781 and going down the Mississippi River, through the Panama Canal and through several islands in the Pacific. Pratt was discharged in August, 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Dale Mitchell. Mitchell joined the Army in 1944. He went to Fort Knox, Kentucky. He learned how to drive a tank and had weapons training. He served as an instructor and assisted with training new recruits in Germany. He came home from Europe and was discharged in December 1945. He got married and made his life’s work on the 1200-acre family farm.
