Reconnaissance of Red Rock Valley, Apache County, Arizona (open access)

Reconnaissance of Red Rock Valley, Apache County, Arizona

Abstract: Reconnaissance of Red Rock Valley was begun on December 10, 1953, and completed on February 11, 1954. The mines in the region were investigated and all exposures of Salt Wash were walked. Paleostream directions and alterations of the sandstones were observed and recorded on a base map. No important new mineralization was discovered-and the area is considered to be of no commercial significance if judged by the outcrops alone. However, a vast amount of Salt Wash lies at slight depth directly to the east of the investigated area.

Ground-Water Monitoring in the Tucson Copper Mining District (open access)

Ground-Water Monitoring in the Tucson Copper Mining District

Abstract: Ground-water and tailings pond monitoring in the Upper Santa Cruz Basin Mines Task Force's Special Studies Area has been performed to determine the nature and extent of aquifer contamination from copper tailings pond's recharge in the basin. A monitoring program for each of three mining areas (Mines A, B, and D) was developed. Analysis of data shows that recharge from Mine A's ponds has caused increased hardness, sulfate and total dissolved solids in local ground water. However, pumpage in the area has controlled most of the water's movement. Pond recharge from Mine B has led to similar conditions, and the degraded water is moving towards a local public-supply well. Pumpage from Mine D's interceptor wells is controlling some, but not all, of the movement of recharge seepage from Mine D's ponds. Recommendations include the need for enhanced monitoring programs at each current mine site, development of a monitoring program for Mine C's area, development of water budgets for all mines, investigation of tailings pond compaction and sliming, establishment of mine closure plans for containment of recharged pond water, and the need for additional interceptor wells in several locations.

Geologic Evaluation of Uranium in Plutonic Rocks, Northwestern Arizona: Status Report (open access)

Geologic Evaluation of Uranium in Plutonic Rocks, Northwestern Arizona: Status Report

From introduction: This report is a status report to complete present contract obligations and is submitted in lieu of a Final Report. A Final Report is not feasible especially until complete analyses and statistical treatment of all of the 436 rock chip, 2 soil-rock and 90 water samples, a total of 528 samples submitted by the partners to Union Carbide, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, plus remaining analyses to be run by BFEC's Grand Junction Laboratory become available and other recommendations and necessities are done. See subsequent section of this report titled: "Recommendations For Work Needed to Complete Final Report". A Final Report may be prepared by the partners if supplemental funds for such work and for completion of the analyses and their statistical treatment ever become available.

Phoenix 1° x 2° NTMS Area, California and Arizona: Data Report (Abbreviated)

From abstract: This abbreviated data report presents results of ground water and stream/surface sediment reconnaissance in the National Topographic Map Series (NTMS) Phoenix 10 x 2 quadrangle. Surface sediment samples were collected at 1388 sites, at a target sampling density of one site per 15 square kilometers (6 square miles). Ground water samples were collected at 155 sites. Neutron activation analysis (NAA) results are given for uranium and 16 other elements in sediments, and for uranium and 9 other elements in ground water. Mass spectrometry results are given for helium in ground water. Field measurements and observations are reported for each site. Analytical data and field measurements are presented in tables and maps.
