Theoretical Considerations on Cell Shape, Convection, and an Area Anomaly Pertinent to Developing a Moving Boundary Theory for Ultracentrifugation

The intuitive concept that a sector shaped centrifuge cell is free from convection is criticized. Not only is a form of convection present for a single sedimenting species, but a more insidious type occurs in a mixture having an appreciable Johnston-Ogston effect. Rather than striving for convection-free sedimentation, the proposal is to utilize if possible an apparently harmless type of convection occurring in a very thin annulus in order to avoid the convection extending between boundaries in a mixture. The requirement that the concentrations be independent of time meets this condition and yields a hyperbolic cell, which is approximated by a sector cell placed in the rotor backwards. Simultaneously, area measurements and calculations involving the Johnston-Ogston anomaly are simplified because of the time independence.

Final Report of Stainless Steel Connector Evaluation

The primary objective of the tests described herein was to determine if the standard five bend connector (drawing H-1-23475) and/or the T. F. Robinson three bend connector (drawing SK-1-20855) fabricated from Type 304 stainless steel tubing would satisfy the requirements of the K reactors. Results of the tests show that the standard five bend connector made from Type 304 stainless steel 0.065 inch wall tubing, in the as bent condition, with either cadmium plated Parker brass nuts and sleeves or cadmium plated high carbon steel nuts and sleeves, is suitable for installation of the K reactors.

Correlation of Substructure With Mechanical Properties of Plastically Deformed Reactor Structural Materials. Progress Report, January 1, 1976--June 30, 1977

Transmission electron microscopy used to evaluate the deformation (creep, fatigue and tensile) induced microstructure of 304 SS, Incoloy 800, 330 SS and three of the experimental alloys (E19, E23 and E36) obtained from the National Alloy Program clearly shows that the relationship between the subgrain size (lambda) and the applied stress (sigma) obeys the equation lambda = Ab (sigma/E)/sup -1/ where A is a constant of the order of 4, b the Burgers rector and E is Young's modulus. Hot-hardness studies on 304 SS, 316 SS, Incoloy 800, 2 /sup 1///sub 4/ Cr-1 Mo steels, 330 SS, Inconel 718, PE-16, Inconel 706, M-813 and the above three experimental alloys suggests that reasonable effective activation energies for creep may be obtained through the use of the hardness test as a strength microprobe tool. The ordering of the strength levels obtained through hot-hardness follows quite closely that obtained in tensile tests when those data are available.

Evaluation of metal-foil strain gages for cryogenic application in magnetic fields

The requirement for the design and construction of large superconducting magnet systems for fusion research has raised a number of new questions regarding the properties of composite superconducting conductors. One of these, the effect of mechanical stress on the current-carrying capacity of Nb/sub 3/Sn, is of major importance in determining the feasibility of constructing large magnets with this material. A typical experiment for determining such data involves the measurement of critical current versus magnetic field while the conductor is being mechanically strained to various degrees. Techniques are well developed for the current and field measurements, but much less so for the accurate measurement of strain at liquid-helium temperature in a high magnetic field. A study was made of commercial, metal-foil strain gages for use under these conditions. The information developed can also be applied to the use of strain gages as diagnostic tools in superconducting magnets.

Experimental results show the sensitivity of hydrodynamically generated vertical loads to changes in the drywell pressurization rate, downcomer submergence, and vent-line loss coefficient. Insignificant effects on peak vertical loads were observed when the vent-line loss was varied. Peak vertical loads can be reduced by adding initial drywell overpressure so that the downcomers are partly cleared of water. Spatial variation of pressure at about the time of vent clearing is seen in comparisons of data from locations along the axis of the toroidal wetwell.

Safety Analysis Report for Packaging (SARP): ATMX-500 Railcar nuclear packaging

A Safety Analysis Report for Packaging (SARP) is described that makes available to all potential users the technical specifications and limits pertinent to the modification and use of the ATMX Railcars for which the Department of Transportation has issued Special Permit No. 5948. The SARP includes discussions of structural integrity, thermal resistance, radiation shielding and radiological safety, nuclear criticality safety, and quality control. Much of the information was previously published in a similar report. A complte physical and technical description of the package is presented. The packaging cnsists of a specially modified ATMX Series 500 Railcar loaded with DOT Specification steel drums or fiberglass coated plywood boxes. The results of the nuclear criticality safety analysis provide the maximum quantities of each fissile isotope which may be shipped as Fissile Class I in 30- and 55-gal drums. A limit of 5 g/ft/sup 3/ was established for wooden boxes. Design and development considerations regarding the packaging concept and modification of the ATMX-500 Railcar are presented. Tables, dimensional sketches, sequential photographs of the structural modifications, technical references, loading and shipping guidelines, and results of Mound Laboratory's experience in using this container are included. Calibration of thin film EMP sensors by AFWL Coaxial Chamber

Preliminary EMP calibration data on magnetic thin film current sensors has been obtained. The Air Force Weapon Lab's Coaxial Chamber was used as the EMP standard and a current pulse width of 40 ns was used. It was found that the sensitivity of the sensors can be increased by controlling the width of the 90/sup 0/ wall strip and that the current scales for the sensors were linear. The results strongly suggest that the dimensions of the sensors can be varied to meet different measurement requirements.

Novel approaches to the production of higher alcohols from synthesis gas

ASPEN computer simulation cases involving methanol, ethanol and propanol recycle have been completed. The results indicate that the yield of higher alcohols increased slightly until the quantity of recycled lower alcohol equaled the amount of that alcohol produced (i.e. when there is no net formation of the recycled alcohol). Above this point, no change in higher alcohol yield was observed. All cases were based on a 2/1 H{sub 2}/CO feed ratio at 70 atm and 275{degree}C. ASPEN PLUS simulations of the thermodynamics of higher alcohol synthesis were carried out based on non-ideal, equation-of-state models. The models used were the Peng-Robinson and the Redlich-Kwong-Aspen equations of state. The results of these simulations indicate very little difference between the results obtained with the ideal fluid model and the non-ideal models. No significant changes were found in reactant conversion, product distribution or product yield. All laboratory renovations are now complete.

Prospects for 6 to 10 tesla magnets for a TEVATRON upgrade

The first SSC physics is at least 10 years away. An upgrade of the Fermilab Tevatron will ensure the continuity of a vigorous high-energy physics program until the SSC turns on. Three basic proposals are under consideration: /bar p/p at 3 /times/ 10/sup 31/ --Increase luminosity by improvements to the p source. pp at 1 TeV and 2 /times/ 10/sup 32/--Move the main ring to a new tunnel, build a second Tevatron ring, and /bar p/p > 1.5 TeV and 7 /times/ 10/sup 30/--Replace the tevatron with a higher energy ring. The last two options requires about a hundred 6.6-tesla dipoles in addition to a ring of Tevatron strength (4.4 T) magnets. These higher-field magnets are necessary in both rings to lengthen the straight sections in order to realize the collision optics. The third option requires a ring of magnets of 6.6 T or slightly higher to replace the present Tevatron plus a number of special 8--9 tesla magnets. The viability of the high-energy option then depends on the practicality of sizable numbers of reliable 8--9 tesla dipoles as well as 800 6.6-tesla dipoles. SEISMIC DATA FOR NUCLEAR EXPLOSION MONITORING IN THE ARABIAN PENINSULA

We report results from the third and final year of our project (ROA0101-35) to collect seismic event and waveform data recorded in and around the Arabian Peninsula. This effort involves several elements. We are working with King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology to collect data from the Saudi National Seismic Network, that consists of 38 digital three-component stations (27 broadband and 11 short-period). We have an ongoing collaboration with the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, which runs the eight station Kuwait National Seismic Network. We installed two temporary broadband stations in the United Arab Emirates (funded by NNSA NA-24 Office of Non-Proliferation & International Security). In this paper we present a summary of data collected under these efforts including integration of the raw data into LLNL's Seismic Research Database and preliminary analysis of souce parameters and earth structure.
