Report documenting the ongoing research and developments undertaken at a pilot plant with five vertical-tube evaporators.

This is the concept for a series of post-shot investigations at the Piledriver site, Area 15, Nevada Test Site (NTS), to gain information on: Chimney geometry and associated wall rock conditions resulting from a deeply buried (1500-ft) nuclear explosion in granite; The characteristics and distribution of rubble and radioactivity in the chimney; and Data pertinent to in-situ leaching. These categories define the three phases of this proposal in chronological order. The technical programs under Phases II and III will depend on the results of Phase 1. Presently, it is not known whether or not there has been a collapse of the Piledriver cavity. If collapse occurred, the predicted dimensions of the chimney, based on Hardhat experience, are expected to be 250 ft in diameter and 560 ft high. For the purpose of this discussion, it is assumed this condition exists.

Work is reported in these areas: general radiation effects; toxicity of radioelements; studies at the molecular and cellular levels; environmental radiation studies; atmospheric radioactivity and fallout; marine sciences; radiological and health physics; and radiation instruments.

These design elements are described: utility systems; reactor systems; irradiation test systems and facilities; component handling systems; examination systems and facilities; unified instrument and control systems; and other miscellaneous facilities.

Although the detailed pathway of carbon, by which carbohydrates are formed from carbon dioxide during photosynthesis, has been established, comparatively little is known about the participation and transport of hydrogen in the complex series of reactions now known to be involved in photosynthesis. The transport of hydrogen may occur concurrently with the redox reactions of photosynthetic electron transport leading to the formation of ATP, as well as in the reduction of carbon dioxide. The participation of the chlorophylls, the carotenoids, the quinones, and other lipoid components in photosynthetic hydrogen transport has been the subject of considerable speculation. In an attempt to elucidate the pathway of hydrogen transport, we are studying the tritium labeling pattern in the lipid extracts of Rhodospirillum rubrum after the bacteria have been illuminated in growth medium containing tritiated water.

In the various design concepts of using pyrofoil as seals, thermal and flow barriers, and antifriction joints in the reactor core, dimensional tolerances can become critical in some areas. In such cases the compaction properties of he pyrofoil are essential for adequate design and for setting up procedures in the fabrication and handling of parts. Preliminary tests indicated that initial compaction was seriously affected by prior handling. In the case of the aft end seals the compaction and hysteresis properties at low loads must be considered in order to maintain sealing between elements under known bundling pressure conditions.
