Forestry-Tree Farm

Photograph of First member tree farm. This plan is registered with the American Tree Farm System. It consists of 30 acres of pine released by girdling undesireable hardwoods in 1953. A selective cut was made in 1957. Excellent natural reproduction is evident from a good seed crop in 1957.

Swarming Bees

Photograph of Sweetclover in a cropping system to improve organic matter and soil stucture. Uses honey bees to polonize the clover for seed production. Bees are Swarming. One swarm has just settled on fence post, leaders come to direct their swarm to their new home.

Checking Growth of Yellow Sweet Clover

Photograph of SCS Tech. Clarence E. Stith checks growth of biennial yellow sweet clover. Stith planted the clover in the spring of 1952 in this 20 acre wheat field solely to improve the soil, the deep roots opening up the soil for the free circulation of air and water. He also uses hairy vetch turned in to add organic matter. To follow clover with wheat for 4 or 5 years.

Sweetclover Root System

Photograph of the nodules on the roots of this biennial sweetclover plant. After land was in Maize, Lee planted clover in spring of 1952 to improve the soil before going to wheat. He is doing whole farm of 960 acres this way. SCS Tech. E.S. Cordell holds plant.

Cover Crops

Photograph of Lee Brown, operator, is plowing under mature cover of rye after it has been grazed about 5 months by livestock. Knie uses this field, approximately 100 acres of Class I, II, and III land, exclusively for grazing. He says the cattle gained about 2 lbs. per day and this utilization of the land produces considerable more than harvest crops by machine.

Seed Harvest

Photograph of combining button clover in midland Bermudagrass field for seed harvest. The grass will be later baled for hay nad used for grazing. Mr. Hair believes that the clover will make 400 pounds per acre. This field is Red River bottom land. The growing of clover also improves the grass.

Cotton Irrigation

Photograph of flooding a cotton crop in the Washita River bottom, Soil Unit 8Hm AL RP. This field of 22 acres was level bordered in March 1955, and at the time the photo was taken, estimates were that this cotton was already able to produce 1.5 bales per acre. Wheat on this same field in 1952 made a complete failure, coton in 1953 and 1954 was also a complete failure. Source of water, Washita River.

Human Interest, Edward Brewer

Photograph of +Mr. Edward L. Brewer, owner of 6000 acre ranch in Oklahoma panhandle. Mr. Brewer has owned and operated this ranch since 1917. He has seen several dry and wet periods. He went though the "Dirty Thirties" of dust storms. One of the first to sign contract under Great Plains Conservation Program.

Checking Wheat

Good tall growth of wheat was attributed to conditioning of the soil with alfalfa for six years. Wggins is to change from flood irrigation to level border. SCS Engineers designed irrigation system.
