An Investigation of Aircraft Heaters 35: Thermocouple Conduction Error Observed in Measuring Surface Temperatures

Note presenting experimental results that verify an analysis of errors occurring when thermocouples are used to measure the temperature of surfaces exposed at temperatures different from that of the surface. The data indicate that the electrical insulation of the wires is not effective in reducing the errors involved when the thermocouples are placed normal to the surface and exposed to the ambient fluids.

Improving the Performance of a Compression Ignition Engine by Directing Flow of Inlet Air

"The object of this report is to present the results of tests performed by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics to determine the effect on engine performance of directing the flow of the inlet air to a 5-inch by 7-inch cylinder, solid injection, compression ignition engine, After a few preliminary tests, comparative runs were made at a speed of 1500 r.p.m. with and without directed air flow. It was found that directing the flow of the inlet air toward the fuel injection valve gave steadier engine operation, and an appreciable increase in power, and decreased fuel consumption" (p. 1).

Analysis of Square Shear Web Above Buckling Load

"A solution of Von Karman's fundamental equations for plates with large deflections is presented for the case of a shear web divided into square panels by reinforcing struts. Numerical solutions are given for struts of infinite rigidity and for struts the weight of which is one-fourth the weight of the sheet. The results are compared with Wagner's diagonal tension theory as extended by Kuhn and by Langhaar. It is found that the diagonal tension theory as developed by Kuhn agrees best with the present paper in the practical range when r=1/4. Kuhn's theory is in especially good agreement for the force in the strut when r=1/4" (p. 1).

Graphical and Analytical Methods for the Determination of a Flow of a Compressible Fluid Around an Obstacle

"Chaplygin introduced the hodograph method in the theory of compressible fluid flows and developed a method for constructing stream functions of such flows. This method, which has been extensively used in investigation of compressible fluid flows, is limited in certain respects. The expression for the stream function obtained in this manner can represent only certain types of flow patterns. In general, flow patterns obtained in this way cannot represent the whole flow around an obstacle, but only a part of such a flow, and therefore several expressions are needed in order to obtain the whole flow" (p. 1).

Principal Effects of Axial Load on Moment-Distribution Analysis of Rigid Structures

"This thesis presents the method of moment distribution modified to include the effect of axial load upon the bending moments. This modification makes it possible to analyze accurately complex structures, such as rigid fuselage trusses, that heretofore had to be analyzed by approximate formulas and empirical rules. The method is simple enough to be practicable even for complex structures, and it gives a means of analysis for continuous beams that is simpler than the extended three-moment equation now in common use" (p. 1).

Considerations of the Total Drag of Supersonic Airfoil Sections

The results of calculations of the viscous and pressure drags of some two-dimensional supersonic airfoils at zero lift are presented. The results indicate that inclusion of viscous drag alters many previous results regarding the desirability of certain airfoil shapes for securing low drags at supersonic speeds. At certain Reynolds and Mach numbers, for instance, a circular-arc airfoil may theoretically have less drag than the previously advocated symmetrical wedge-shape profile; although under different conditions, the circular-arc airfoil may have a higher drag.
