Preliminary Internal Performance Data for a Variable-Ejector Assembly on the XJ79-GE-1 Turbojet Engine, 2, Afterburning Configurations

Internal performance of an XJ79-GE-1 variable ejector was experimentally determined with the primary nozzle in two representative after-burning positions. Jet-thrust and air-handling data were obtained in quiescent air for 4 selected ejector configurations over a wide range of secondary to primary airflow ratios and primary-nozzle pressure ratios. The experimental ejector data are presented in both graphical and tabulated form.

Flight Determination of the Pressure Recovery and Drag Characteristics of a Twin Side-Inlet Model at Transonic Speeds

Report presenting free-flight and free-jet testing of a twin side-inlet configuration, including a pilot's canopy and a wheel-well fairing, between a range of Mach numbers from 0.8 to 1.55. Using side inlets provides two important advantages: the inlet can be located closer to the engine and it frees up the nose for other uses. Results regarding the effects of oscillating flow, external-drag coefficient, and total-pressure recovery are provided.

Report presenting an investigation to experimentally determine the effectiveness of air cooling several turbine-blade configurations in a turbojet engine. The results obtained with the first configuration, which was a hollow blade shell with 10 tube inserts, are presented. A description of factors leading to the design are provided as well as the correlated cooled-blade temperatures, solid-blade temperatures, cooling-air-temperature increase through radial passages, and blade failure are provided.

Test of an aerodynamically heated multiweb wing structure (MW-1) in a free jet at Mach number 2

Report presenting testing of a multiweb wing structure, representing an airplane or missile wing, under simulated supersonic flight conditions to determine the transient temperature distribution. The aerodynamic loads caused the model to fail near the end of the test. The failure is analyzed and it is determined that the model failed as a result of the combined action of aerodynamic heating and loading.

Measurements of the damping in roll of large-scale swept-forward and swept-back wings

Report presenting wind-tunnel testing of five large-scale tapered wings with a variety of angles of sweep to determine the effects of scale and sweep on the damping-in-roll parameter. Rolling moment and pressure distribution were measured for each plain wing while in steady roll for a range of angles of attack. Results regarding the effects of sweep at zero lift, effects of lift, and aurorotational characteristics are provided.

"Vibration investigations were made of two blade cascades in wind tunnels and of blades operated in the NACA 24-inch supersonic compressor. The results showed that the blade vibrations were present at all tunnel and compressor air velocities and were influenced primarily by tunnel design, simulated centrifugal loading, surging, angle of attack, and possible critical Mach numbers" (p. 1).

Report presenting an experimental investigation of pressure disturbances caused by the reflection of two-dimensional shock waves from a slotted boundary at Mach numbers between 1.0 and 1.5. Simple-wedge airfoils with three different apex angles were used to generate shock waves and the static pressures ere measured at various points along the surface of each airfoil.

Results regarding power losses with the original diffuser-entrance nose, development of revised diffuser-entrance noses, and energy losses in the tunnel with the final diffuser-entrance nose are provided.

The flame holders were compared on the basis of operating ranges of fuel-air ratio, combustion-chamber-inlet velocity, and the combustion efficiencies obtainable.
