Pasture Establishment With Bermuda Grass
Photograph of a close-up of bermuda grass pasture from seed developed on formerly timbered land in May 1955. Timber cut off at ground level with crawler tractor mounted scolloped blade in the fall of 1955. Land prepared in the spring of 1956. Limed according to needs and fertilized with 300 pounds of 4-12-4 per acre and seeded with 2 pounds of hulled bermuda seed per acre. Seed and fertilizer placed in shallow furrows 18 inches apart. Photo made 9 weeks ater seeding. Owner plans brush and weed control with herbicide.

Nursery Plot of Greenfield Bermuda
Photograph of a nursury plot of Greenfield bermuda grass planted July 1, 1955. First crop of roots was harvested and used to plant 100 acres in 1956. Fertilizer was applied to grass at the rate of 150 pounds of 10-20-10 per acre. This grass has been grazed since it was planted and is preferred by cattle to other types of bermudagrass.

All larger trees have been girdled [i.e., killed without felling--used to enhance wildlife]. This area was burned over before seedlings were set in 1955. OK-335-2.

Bermuda grass roots were planted with a mechanical Bermuda grass sprigger available to cooperators of the Latimer SCD on a rental basis. Roots were planed on a well prepared seed bed and fertilized with 150 pounds of 10-20-10 per acre applied in rows at sprigging time, limed according to need. Grass was planted in June of 1955.

Photograph of a pasture of common Bermuda grass sprigged in the spring of 1952. It was given no fertilizer at planting time. Bermuda grass was over seeded with big hop and White Dutch clover in the fall of 1952. Pasture has been fertilized with 100 pounds of 0-2-0 each fall since it was established. Class V land. Permanent pasture was established on this land as a correct land use practice.

Photograph of a plot o land was cleared of brush and trees in the fall of 1955 and sprigged to Greenfield Bermuda grass in May of 1956. It was fertilized with 150 pounds of 10-20-10 per acre. Heavy trees and brush were cleared with a bulldozer as recommended by the SCS as a proper land use practice.

Photograph of Brazil Creek bottomland hand cleared of trees and brush in the winter of 1955 and seeded to common Bermuda grass n May 1956 and fertilized with 200 pounds of 5-10-5 using Soil Conservation District equipment. Eighteen head of cattle grazing on this plot in preference to other and older plots.

Drainage
Photograph of a field drainage ditch in Fourche Maline creek bottom constructed in the spring of 1956. Ditch is 2 feet deep, 16 feet wide and 3700 feet in length. It was constructed to drain a 80 acre field to make it useful for cropland. Ditch was designed, laid out, and staked by SCS Technicians. It was constructed to planned specifications.
