An Analysis of the Variation With Altitude of Effective Gust Velocity in Convective-Type Clouds

From Introduction: "In the present paper, the variation of effective gust velocity in convective-type clouds with altitude is investigated. Data obtained during 1941 and 1942 at altitudes up to 34,000 feet and data obtained more recently from the Thunderstorm Project (reference 5) at altitudes up to 26,000 feet are utilized for this purpose. Consideration is given in analyzing the results both to data for the range

Application of Statistical Methods to Study of Gas-Turbine Blade Failures (open access)

Application of Statistical Methods to Study of Gas-Turbine Blade Failures

Note presenting an investigation conducted to determine the applicability of statistical methods as an approach to the evaluation of materials for use in gas turbines by determining the frequency distribution of time until failure of gas-turbine blades. Two wheels, each incorporating 142 inserted blades of a cast cobalt-base heat-resistant alloy, were tested. The results indicated that the time for first failure may not generally be taken as an accurate indication of the performance of the average blade.

By What Lost Campfire

Sheet music for "By What Lost Campfire," for mezzo soprano. The poem is written by Arthur Sampley and the music is by George Minter. The lyrics are "By what lost camp fire/ what lone height did deserts streching [sic] far, what/ comrades faces framed in light guide western star./ Up slopes I shall not/ climb again down trails the grasses hide, past/ camps where sleeping friends have lain too late to/ ride. to one dark peak a-/ gainst the sky on which the faint trail ends./ guide star and camp fire till I spy those fire lit friends."

The calculation of downwash behind supersonic wings with an application to triangular plan forms (open access)

The calculation of downwash behind supersonic wings with an application to triangular plan forms

Report presenting a method consistent with the assumptions of small perturbation theory, which provides a means of determining the downwash behind a wing in supersonic flow for a known load distribution. The analysis is based on the use of supersonic doublets, which are distributed over the plan form and wake of the wing in a manner determined from wing loading.

The Chelate Process III : Preliminary Continuous-Operation Studies (open access)

The Chelate Process III : Preliminary Continuous-Operation Studies

Abstract: The rate of extraction of PuIV in either direction between benzene-TTA and aqueous HNO3 solutions is shown in the present study to be fast enough so that application of the chelate process to continuous operation should be feasible. This conclusion is based on two primary considerations: 1. The mechanism limiting the rate of extraction appears to be diffusion and not chemical-reaction-limiting. 2. The extraction may be controlled by adjustment of the system conditions to give almost any desired specifications of rate and/or equilibrium. A continuous process involving multiple extraction stages with a controlled pH gradient is proposed for obtaining maximum decontamination and plutonium recovery.

Chordwise and Spanwise Loadings Measured at Low Speed on a Triangular Wing Having an Aspect Ratio of Two and an NACA 0012 Airfoil Section

Note presenting pressure measurements on a triangular wing with an aspect ratio of 2 and an NACA 0012 airfoil section parallel to the center line. The wing angle of attack was varied from 4.3 to 48.1 degrees with the airspeed held constant at approximately 100 miles per hour. Results regarding chordwise pressure distribution, section lift characteristics, span load distribution, centers of pressure, and comparison of pressure data with force-test data are provided.
