The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Irving Cumbie. Cumbie joined the Coast Guard in mid-1942 and was commissioned as ensign that December. He completed Quartermaster school. Cumbie was assigned to Key West, Florida to patrol the harbor and transport pilots out to merchant ships. In the summer of 1944 he completed amphibious school at Camp Bradford, Virginia. In October he served as communications officer aboard USS USS LST-886. In January of 1945 they began a 5-week trip for Ulithi to deliver a load of ammo and black powder. They restocked their ship with more ammunition in Guam, which they delivered to Iwo Jima. They continued traveling to Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa moving Seabee equipment, fog oil, and other supplies. Cumbie provides vivid details of their travels and his experiences. In September of 1945 they transported part of the Occupation Force to Japan. He was discharged in March of 1946.

Engel was aboard the Zane on 7 December 1941 in Pearl Harbor. At 7:55am he heard the planes and identified the marks on Japanese planes. He signaled the nearby ships, announcing the attack on Pearl Harbor. At Pearl Harbor, their ship was assigned to a mine warfare force to sweep mines. They also traveled to Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Guadalcanal and Tulagi. They participated in the invasions of Ulithi, Kwajalein, Saipan, Tinian and Guam. Throughout their travels they swept mines and delivered supplies. Engel provides details of his travels, work and participation with invasions. He was discharged in December of 1945.

He served aboard the USS Richmond (CL-9). After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Richmond escorted transport ships carrying troops to the South Pacific. In 1942, they were instrumental in driving the Japanese out of the Aleutian Islands. Kewley recounts his experiences through the Battle of the Komandorski Islands in March of 1943. In mid-1943, he was assigned to the Officer Messenger Mail Center in the Marshall Islands. He was discharged in the fall of 1945.

His first assignment was aboard the USS SC-1065 before he switched ships to command the USS SC-1066 and headed for the Western Pacific. There, he was involved in the invasions of the Marshall Islands and the Mariana Islands before being assigned to the USS Medea (AKA-31) as navigator. He participated in the invasion of Okinawa and transported troops ashore at Tokyo Bay during the surrender. Hollander recalls several anecdotes about his experiences in the Navy aboard small vessels. He received his discharge in February, 1946.
