Analysis of an analytical technique for distributing air sampling locations around nuclear facilities
A new analytical mechanism for distributing air sampling locations around nuclear facilities, including reactors, fuel fabrication, fuel reprocessing and research centers, has been devised. This method was developed to facilitate the efficient incorporation of past experiences into environmental surveillance programs for now or developing installations. The technique provides an initial distribution of air samplers around a site which correlates well with placements on sites which have been occupied by long established programs with their inherent evolution and refinements. The applicability of this approach has been examined by comparing sampling locations in well-established air monitoring programs scattered worldwide with location distributions recommended by this mechanism. Results of these comparisons will be detailed.

Analysis of the leak-detection system for top welds of EBR-II fuel elements
An analysis of the leak detector used to check the top welds on EBR-II fuel elements was performed. Data were obtained to allow calculation of volumes of the metering chamber and test chamber at each station of the leak detector. These volumes and a mathematical model were used to calculate decrease in pressure with time for each station. Values for calibrated leaks and unknown leak rates were compared with calculated ones. The calculated results for the two calibrated leaks agreed with the observed pressure-time results for the two leaks. Results show that determining the volumes of each leak-detector station allows the leakrate sensitivity to be readily calculated for each station. One leak-detector station could not detect a minimum leak rate of 2 x 10/sup -4/ std cm/sup 3/ sec at 40 atm, which is the current specification. The other four stations could meet the specification. Suggestions are given for periodic calibration of the leak detectors as well as precautions that must be observed to achieve optimum sensitivity when operating the leak detector. (auth)

Artificial-Recharge Experiments and Operations on the Southern High Plains of Texas and New Mexico
Abstract: Experiments using highly turbid water from playa lakes for injection into the Ogallala Formation have resulted in greatly decreased yield of the recharge wells. Recharge of ground or surface water of good quality has indicated, however, that injection through wells in an effective method of recharging the aquifer. Water that is slightly turbid can be successfully injected for a period of time, but generally results in constantly declining yields and capacity for recharge. Redevelopment through pumping and surging significantly prolongs the life of recharge wells under some conditions. Surface spreading is little practiced on the High Plains, but locally may be a feasible means of artificial recharge.
