Maifest ballgown of lemon yellow organza, polonaised. Fitted princess-line bodice with narrow shoulder straps and shaped neckline. Decorative shoulder straps of gathered mustard green and moss green velvet ribbon. Floral accent over the left breast consisting of a pink rose and blue cornflower with lemon yellow velvet and organza leaves. The velvet shoulder straps extend to the overskirt. As they cross the bodice they follow the princess seams and are encased in ruched lemon yellow organza. These casings run from the top of the bustline to waistlevel. Centerback zipper closure from midback to hiplevel. The princess-line bodice extends to a dropped yoke. Hiplevel seam with a full, gathered and swagged polonaise overskirt of lemon yellow organza. The velvet shoulder straps carry down through the overskirt running through wide ruched casings at the apex of the swags. They emerge at the hem of the overskirt as large looped bows with tails. The casing areas are accented with floral clusters of pink roses, yellow organza roses, violets and lavender cornflowers with yellow velvet leaves. Brief Artist Statement by Lara Asam as part of a 2021 MFA Exhibition, entitled "Thresholds” in the Cora Stafford Gallery on the campus of the University of North Texas on April 12-22, 2021.

Debutant dress of ivory synthetic floral lace bodice and synthetic satin skirt. Floor length; cap sleeves of lace. Square neckline trimmed in lace dotted with faux pearls, princess waist with gathered skirt below natural waist; bottom of bodice piped in synthetic. Bodice lined with synthetic. Sleeves and upper bodice unlined. Side zipper.

My artistic practice centers around personal history, connection, and identity. I reflect on my experience as a Nigerian who has lived on three continents thus far, and how those experiences have led to the deconstruction, reassembly, and hybridization of my identity. My work pays homage to my tribe of origin, Yoruba, whilst redefining and exploring the hybridity that exists as a result of cross-cultural influences that are prominent in our world today. I incorporate varying objects and materials such as jewelry, sculpture, wood, metal, and fiber. This integration speaks to the multicultural existence of the world I live in the interrelationship between Nigeria and the West.

Coat of tan leather suede. Knee length or slightly longer. Round neckline with slight band collar. Center front opening with 7 circular metal buttons attached with matching leather thongs. Edges of opening have thong stitching. Two front horizontal, slit pockets edged with same thong stitching as opening with ends hanging as single strands of fringe. Long sleeves with thong stitching at cuff. At upper bust, shoulder, elbow, and hem of coat is leather thong fringe. On collar above upper bust fringe, above elbow fringe, on pocket, and above hem are "stamped and painted" decorative bands. In line above fringe at upper bust is line of round brass studs. Artist Statement from the MFA Exhibition: "My work represents my personal experience with having learning differences such as Dyslexia, ADD, Auditory Processing Disorder, and others. I create pieces that reflect my thoughts, experiences, and the obstacles that I face daily. I utilize materials obtained from school desks as memories that reflect on the long periods of time we spend siting at desks in classrooms, during which we discover how to process information. To articulate these experiences, I create marks and drawings on recycled pieces of school desks. These marks indicate equations, words spelling, and information that mimics symbols from my own learning experience. Through the inclusion of hidden stones and drawings, I integrate positive associations and humor."
