Electroplated Metals on Uranium for Aluminum Cladding (open access)

Electroplated Metals on Uranium for Aluminum Cladding

Abstract: "Aluminum-clad nickel-plated uranium is corrosion resistant in boiling water. Samples with intentional defects in the aluminum-nickel clodding layers, after testing for more than 300 hr. showed no sign of rapid failure. The study of electroplated metals on uranium for aluminum cladding has defined the effects of several processing variables on the corrosion resistance. The quality of the uranium and the quality of the aluminum-nickel bond were important. Heat treatment and vacuum outgassing of the nickel-plated uranium prior to aluminum cladding were beneficial, and minimizing the amount of air present in the hot-press assembly was desirable. Variation in the steps for electroplating on uranium did not affect the corrosion resistance of aluminum-clad uranium."

A Needle in a Haystack

Abstract: "Production of [rho]'s and [omega]'s in [pi]- + p and p + [letter p with a bar over it] interactions is discussed. The [rho] is presumably a J = 1-, 1 = 1 state and thus can decay into 2[pi]'s via a strong coupling. The [omega] is probably J = 1-, 1 = 0 which can also decay into 2[pi]'s via electromagnetic coupling. A theoretical description of this situation is presented in terms of coupled time-dependent Schroedinger equations which mix [rho] and [omega] states that are assumed to be isotopically pure at the time of production. The interference between the two resonances was found to have the effect of extending the 2[pi] spectrum toward the [omega] mass."

Metallurgical Laboratory, Chemical Research - Radiation Chemistry, Report for the Month Ending May 15, 1943

Technical report that information has bee obtained on the effect of beta and gamma radiation on the electrical resistance of insulating materials The results are summarized. The recovery to original resistance values has been measured. In general, the initial rate is rapid for the first few hours; the rate then decreases sharply. Certain samples show evidence of complete recovery. Effects on mechanical properties of several plastics has also been studied. Data on gas evolution from several organic materials including those suggested by the physiological shield have been extended to include both beta and deuteron bombardments. Samples of "Press-wood" are being evaluated. The effect of current on the H2O2 production in water containing I- has been studied at several I- concentrations. Water contain-dissolved CO2 shows the presence of oxidant (presumably H2O2). H2O2 has been produced by recoil protons from the scattering of fast neutrons in de-oxygenated water. Radioactive solutions do not greatly affect the applicability the glass electrode providing the electrode is thoroughly washed with distilled water before immersion in the standard buffer solution.

Remark on the Radiative Muon Decay in the Theory With an Intermediate Vector Meson

"The problem of explaining the lack of radiative muon decay in an intermediate charged vector meson theory is discussed. A possible way of introducing the charged vector meson to the theory of weak interactions is outlined in which renormalization is retained. However, if this way is used, the anomalous magnetic moment is calculated to be large, which is in contradiction with expectation."
