Oral History Interview with John Lazarich, May 9, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with John Lazarich. Lazarich joined the Coast Guard in August 1942 and trained at New York. His first assignment was aboard a patrol boat in New York Harbor. He then went to gunnery school in Florida before shipping out to New Guinea to serve aboard an Amry tug boat. He also participated in the campaign to liberate the Philippines and recalls being in a minefield off Borneo. He also went to Okinawa and eventually Japan before returing to the US in December. Lazarich elected to be discharged in March, 1946 and then joined the New York City Fire Department.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with John Baker. Baker joined the Army Air Forces around 1942. He completed flight school and served as a bomber pilot. He was selected to serve as a B-24 pilot instructor in Courtland, Alabama. He flew B-29s. Baker was discharged in August of 1946 and remained in the Reserves.

Oral History Interview with David L. Houston, May 17, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with David Lipscomb Houston. Houston graduated from high school around 1938. He enrolled in Pre-Med at Hardin Junior College, Wichita Falls, Texas in September of 1941. He enlisted in the US Army on 30 June 1942 and served with the 3rd Medical Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division. His unit landed at Fedala, Morocco on 8 November 1942 for the Invasion of North Africa. In September of 1943, they invaded Italy. Houston returned to the US in mid-1944, and was assigned as a surgical assistant in the New York Point of Embarkation Station Hospital. In July of 1945, Houston graduated from Officer Candidate School in Louisiana. He was discharged in late 1945, and remained in the Army Reserve for 28 years.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Alfred Lehmann. Lehmann was drafted in the US Army in 1943. He completed 6 weeks of boot camp in Little Rock, Arkansas, then was deployed overseas as an infantryman. He served with the 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division. Lehmann served in the Philippine Islands, and shares his experiences in the Bougainville Campaign, the Battle of Luzon and freeing prisoners in Manila. Lehmann returned to the US in December of 1945 and received his discharge.

Oral History Interview with Elizabeth P. Vieau, May 17, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Elizabeth Penn Hammond Vieau. Vieau was born on 11 May 1919 in Atlanta, Georgia. After high school graduation in 1936, she attended Agnes Scott College in Decatur as a math major. Vieau joined the Navy WAVES around December of 1942, completed Supply Corps officer training at Harvard in Cambridge. She served as a paymaster for Naval ROTC students at Georgia Tech, and describes her financial responsibilities in that role. She was later transferred to Naval Air Station Pensacola, and then to Boston. Vieau met and married her husband, Vee, who was a Navy flight instructor. She was discharged after the war ended.

Oral History Interview with A. K. Sheffield, May 20, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with A K Sheffield. Sheffield joined the Navy in late 1943. He completed Armed Guard School in San Diego. He served with the Navy Armed Guard aboard a transport ship, and traveled to the Philippine Islands. In May of 1944, Sheffield was aboard the SS Henry Bergh when it ran aground on the Farallon Islands, and shares details of those events. He traveled through the Pacific Islands, to Japan and throughout the Atlantic. Sheffield does not speak of participating in any battles or combat. He returned home aboard USS Iowa (BB-61) after the war ended in late 1945.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Edward Campbell. Campbell joined the Army Air Forces in late 1943. He completed gunnery school. He served as a B-24 turret gunner with the 394th Bomb Squadron. He completed 50 combat missions, over Tarawa, Borneo, bombing oil fields, refineries and ports. He returned to the US and received his discharge in 1945.
