PSEPLOT: a controller for plotting data from the Mark I Boiling Water Reactor Pressure Suppression Experiment. [BWR]

PSEPLOT is a computer routine that was developed for the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory Octopus computer system to generate several thousand plots of engineering data in a consistent format for referencing and comparison. The time-dependent engineering data were recorded during each of 25 tests of the Mark I Pressure Suppression Experiment (PSE). Although PSEPLOT is restricted to PSE, its concept is applicable to any similar data management task.

Mathematical foundations of the general ordered S-matrix and its topological expansion. [Higher-order corrections, indices, unitarity, graphs] (open access)

Mathematical foundations of the general ordered S-matrix and its topological expansion. [Higher-order corrections, indices, unitarity, graphs]

The concept of order is analyzed for general hadronic amplitudes. It is shown that unitarity imposes restrictions on the graphs used to represent the ordered amplitudes and the most general graphs consistent with unitarity are derived and then analyzed in terms of their topological properties. The mathematical ingredients for the classification of higher order corrections to the ordered amplitudes are introduced. Three ''indices'' characterizing the topological amplitudes and their products are defined and are shown to be consistent and complete for the classification. A connection with the 1/N expansion, similar to the one introduced by Veneziano for mesons, is suggested.

Enhancement of methane production in the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludges (open access)

Enhancement of methane production in the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludges

The effect of powdered activated carbon on stressed anaerobic digesters utilizing a sewage sludge substrate was evaluated. The addition of carbon resulted in increased methanee production and greater process stability. The degree of enhancement appeared to be proportional to carbon concentration over the dose range studied (500-10,000 mg/l). A maximum increase in methane production of about 150% was observed at the highest carbon dose. The effect of 1500 mg/l carbon, 4000 mg/l coal, and 4000 mg/l flyash on relatively unstressed digesters was also examined. Units using a sewage sludge substrate were operated at 10 and 20 day SRT's. A 12% increase in methane production was observed in a carbon dosed digester functioning at a 10 day detention time. Enhancement was not evident with carbon at a 20 day SRT. No significant improvement in methane production was obtained in any of the digesters using coal or flyash as additives. Using the experimental data, a technique was developed for estimating the efficiencies of the methane forming and acid forming steps in the anaerobic digestion process. The results indicated that in stressed systems both stages of the digestion process were enhanced by the addition of powdered carbon. In the relatively unstressed systems, when …

Computer automation on an electron-beam welder with automatic, stored seam tracking

A Hamilton Standard 7.5-kW electron-beam welder has been extensively rebuilt, upgraded, and computer automated to provide accurate, repeatable, multipass, wirefed welds with stored seam tracking. Tests have shown that the seam-tracking system can keep the beam on a true line within approximately +-0.05 millimeter, even in the presence of a strongly deflecting magnet.
