Electrolysis of Aluminum Solutions in a Magnetic Field (open access)

Electrolysis of Aluminum Solutions in a Magnetic Field

This investigation is an attempt to verify the original work done by George Antonoff and Anne Rowley, and to contribute specific data on the action of a magnetic field on aluminum cells. Experiments of the type they have described have been performed and an extensive set of data has been collected. It was thought that if the results of Antonoff and Rowley could be duplicated, further investigation would be warranted. However, the experiments have produced negative results. These results are described in detail in these chapters.

The Operation of the T Formation in Football at North Texas State College (open access)

The Operation of the T Formation in Football at North Texas State College

The author undertook to present the system of football used by North Texas from 1940 through 1950, the T formation, which he has used since 1941. The purpose of the study was to present the T formation as we use it, in the system of football we endeavor to coach. A further purpose was to organize the data in such a way that they would be available for use by the Physical Education Department of North Texas State College, and perhaps be helpful to men working in the field of football coaching.

A Report and Evaluation of a Graduate Internship in Music Education (open access)

A Report and Evaluation of a Graduate Internship in Music Education

Advanced courses, more or less related, resulting in a research problem and a thesis are the procedures for graduate work as prescribed and accepted in most fields of study. Is it worth while to try other and possibly less accepted procedures, and then attempt to evaluate the results? For example, would it be profitable for a prospective teacher to spend the major part of his graduate work in actual teaching, to have an opportunity to do intensive work over a long period of time in collaboration with an experienced teacher or supervisor, and to choose his graduate courses so as to relate them to the teaching being done? Is there justification in giving a graduate student the opportunity to try out in a laboratory the ideas gained from academic and professional training, to have further experiences in working with boys and girls, and to develop skills in working with students and other teachers? Would the personal and professional growth of the graduate student, from his related courses, his preparation and planning for the teaching job ahead, his experiences with his students, his adaptation of previous plans to meet the needs of the actual teaching situation, the assembling of materials as …

Television in Education: a Survey of Current Practices and a Consideration of Its Applicability to the Field of Music (open access)

Television in Education: a Survey of Current Practices and a Consideration of Its Applicability to the Field of Music

The use of television as an aid to music education is a relatively new and unexplored field. It is so new, in fact, that to undertake a study of what has been accomplished until the present may seem at first rather premature and unfruitful. It is my belief, however, that if television is to become the prominent factor in education that has been predicted, there is a definite need for a study of what has been done to date toward the development of this new medium. This will provide the background and foundation for further experiment and use. The study shall include, therefore, a brief history of television itself, general educational experiments in television, experiments in televised music education, problems involved in presenting musical television programs, and suggestions for the development of this newest of teaching aids.

The Organ Works of Jehan Alain (open access)

The Organ Works of Jehan Alain

This study looks at Jehan Alain's music itself. However, it does not propose to analyze every bar of every composition but rather to point out certain melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic traits that are peculiar to this composer's style. It will also set forth facts concerning Alain's registrations and other items of special interest to organists. Upon such investigation an attempt will be made to reach a critical evaluation of Alain as a composer for the organ.

Compton Scattering on Nucleons (open access)

Compton Scattering on Nucleons

From introduction: "The present paper deals with a classical calculation in which some of the meson effects can be included to all orders in the meson-nucleon coupling coupling constant, in particular those having to do with the gyration of the nucleon spin and isotopic spin. Such a treatment leads to results qualitatively different from the weak coupling calculations."

A Comparative Study of the Reading Interests of Junior and Senior Students in Ten Texas High Schools (open access)

A Comparative Study of the Reading Interests of Junior and Senior Students in Ten Texas High Schools

The problem undertaken in this study was that of making an effort to determine, in so far as was possible, the reading interests of the students enrolled in the high school at Nocona, Texas, during the 1954-1955 school session. A secondary phase of the problem was to compare these reading interests with those of students enrolled in nine other typical high schools of comparable size in other sections of Texas, as determined by means of a questionnaire survey.

An Investigation of Naturally Occurring Tastes and Odors from Fresh Waters

The Problem of the cause and control of tastes and odors in water supplies has been the subject of a great many investigations during the last half-century; however, many questions in this field remain to be answered. Theories relating to the cause of tastes and odors occurring in water are still rather numerous and, at present, only a few of them are compatible. Although several procedures have been employed for the eradication of tastes and odors from water supplies, none of them are completely successful.

The Synthesis of Benzo(d)pyrido(a)-benzimidazole-5,12-quinone (open access)

The Synthesis of Benzo(d)pyrido(a)-benzimidazole-5,12-quinone

The present investigation yielded an orange product upon refluxing 2-butyramido-3-chloro-1,4-naphthoquinone and 2-aminopyridine in ethanol. When this material was purified, by recrystallization from glacial acetic acid, the melting point was 306 [degrees]. This compound has been shown to be benzo(d)pyrido(a)-benzimidazole-5,12-quinone by the present investigation.

Electric Conduction in an Oil-Pumped Vacuum System (open access)

Electric Conduction in an Oil-Pumped Vacuum System

The leakage of electricity aoross a vacuum space in an electrostatic generator which employs a mixture of Sr/sup 90/ and Y/sup 90/ as the source of charging current was investigated. The vacuum is obtained by means of an oil pump. The leakage was shown to consist of a flow of positive and negative particles between the anode and the cathode. The positive particles were found to be primarily organic ions produced in a layer of oil on the surface of the anode. The negative particles were shown to be mostly electrons. Yields of secondary negative particles and secondary positive particles produced by average positive particles in the energy range from 50 to 200 kev were measured. Yields were found to be dependent on the nature of the target material as well as on the energy of the incident ion. A mass spectrometer was employed to study the nature of the positive ions. Most of these were charged fragments of organic molecules. Neutral particles were attributed to dissociation of a portion of positive ions during their flight from the anode to cathode. Electrons, most of which originate at the beta source, are presumed to be the agent for positive ion production. …
