Startup and testing of the PRTR has been divided into three parts, Design Tests, Critical Tests and Power Tests. This document is the third of the series and describes the performance tests which will be made under nuclear power and the general schedule of operation. Responsibility for the startup of the reactor has been assigned to the PRTR Startup Council. The Power Test Sub-Council, which has done the planning of the initial power operation, was established by the Startup Council. Operation of the reactor will be the responsibility of the PRTR Operation (PRTRO).

The [Sigma/Alpha] Branching Ratio Of [Y*1] (open access)

The [Sigma/Alpha] Branching Ratio Of [Y*1]

Recently a T=1 resonance in the [Alpha w] system called [Y*1] has been observed with a mass of 1385 Mev. Two types of resonances have been predicted that might relate this observation to other elementary-particle interactions: (1) P 3/2 resonances in the Alpha w and Sigma w systems predicted by global symmetry corresponding to the (3/2, 3/2) resonance of the wN system, (2) a spin-1/2 Y-w resonance resulting from a bound state in the KN system. The position and width of the observed [Y*1] resonance agree with both theories but since the spin and parity have not yet been determined, it is impossible at present to distinguish between the two theoretical interpretations.

Martensite In CU-12.0% AL Alloy

Thin foils suitable for transmission electron microscopy have been prepared from bulk specimens of Cu-12.0% Al alloy quenched from 800' C to produce martensite. The martensitic structure consists of long lenticular plates which are twinned on 20-50A scale. The twin planes in the martensite are shown to be [formula]. There is evidence that this structure is ordered as expected for a transformation from an ordered parent lattice. Experiments using a high temperature stage show that the decomposition of the martensite on tempering can be followed directly, but the martensitic transformation did not recur on cooling.

Electrical Limitations To Energy Resolution In Semiconductor Particle Detectors

Based on the assumption that the noise contribution of a semiconductor detector is due solely to the bulk properties of the semiconductor, equations are presented which indicate the theoretical limits of noise in detector-amplifier combinations. These equations show that an optimum amplifier time constant and detector bias voltage exist for which condition the minimum noise is independent of the semiconductor resistivity. The optimum performance of a detector-amplifier system is shown to depend only upon detector area, input capacity (less detector capacity), semiconductor minority carrier lifetime, and the transconductance of the amplifier input tube. A new detector structure including a guard-ring electrode as an integral part of the detector structure is described which largely eliminates noise due to surface leakage. Experimental results for detector leakage and energy resolution are presented which agree well with theory.

Instrumentation Of Multi-Channel Counting Experiments

Recent experience in instrumentation of several nuclear-physics experiments has demonstrated the feasibility of automating the data-acquisition phases of the experiment. Electronic circuits are employed wherever the rate of data flow would be slowed by the use of human operations. Information is selected, temporarily stored, and then recorded in a form suitable for immediate entry into a computer. Experimenters thus freed from the tedious aspects of data collection can devote their time to studying the results of the experiments. Potentially useful nuclear events are first selected by the fast-logic part of the instrumentation. Circuits performing simple logical functions are packaged in modular form for easy grouping into particular coincidence, gating, and mixing configurations. Circuits with slower response times are used for temporary storage and recording operations. Automatic test routines are used to initially align the equipment as well as provide continuous calibration during the experiments. Some of the high-speed circuits are described as well as the methods used to incorporate them into a large counting system.

The Nature of the Axioms of Relativistic Quantum Field Theory

"The formulation of field theories by means of Wightman functions is studied. It is shown that, given two field theories that satisfy all the axioms, one can construct a family of Wightmsn fields with the same properties by a process of superposition of Wightman functions. The condition of unitarity is formulated without reference to asymptotic conditions, and it is proved that the Wightman fields constructed by the superposition process (starting with "unitary" fields) fail to preserve unitarity."

From abstract: "Bis(di-n-hexylphosphinyl)methane, HDPM, [(C6H13)2P(O)]2CH2, has been studied as an extractant for a variety of metals. HDPM was evaluated as an extractant for uranium(VI) and compared with tri-n-octylphosphine oxide, TOPO, (C8H13)3PO. In nonpolar solvents, HDPM forms a polymeric-like substance with compounds of uranium(VI). Viscosity measurements indicate that the molecular weight of this polymeric-like substance is about 100 times greater than the corresponding complex with TOPO. Polymer formation occurs only when nonpolar solvents are used as diluents for HDPM and is easily avoided by using polar solvents such as 1,2-aichlorobenzene. HDPM forms 1:1 and 2:1 complexes with uranium(VI) nitrate. Equilibrium constants for these complexes as well as that for the 2:1 TOPO complex were calculated and it was shown that the over-all constant is at least ten times larger for the HDPM complex than for the TOPO complex. The effect of concentration of various mineral acids, extractant concentration, temperature, and diluents on the extraction of uranium are discussed."

Hazards Report for the SM-1 Core II Without Special Components

Abstract: This technical report describes the changes incurred in the SM-1 by the insertion of the SM-1 Core II without special components. The SM-1 Core II components were made to specifications very nearly identical to those of SM-1 Core I. The differences consist of europium absorber sections, internal europium flux suppressors in the control rod fuel elements, and low impurity cladding. Each of the SM-1 Core II components with the exception of the five absorber sections new in SM-1 Core I were subjected to a Zero Power Experiment at the Alco Critical Facility. The results of this experiment indicate that the SM-1 Core II will have nuclear characteristics very similar to that of the SM-1 Core I. Since SM-1 Core II will be operated with the same mode of rod control, in the same core support structure, and with the same primary coolant flow conditions, the thermal characteristics should be essentially identical to that of SM-1 Core I. Also, all kinetic characteristics of SM-1 Core II should be identical to those of SM-1 Core I. Project CGC-897--Title I design, fission product storage in B-Plant

A previous study described proposed facilities at B-Plant which integrate future fission product and waste calcination activities. However, in the reactivation of B-Plant in accordance with this study, heavy expenditures, above budgeted funds, would be required at an early date for Phase 1 process changes coupled with general rehabilitation work and facilities for updating of radiological control. Since waste calcination activities in B-Plant are not scheduled until Fiscal Year 1966, the expense of B-Plant rehabilitation items would be borne solely by the Fission Product Program. This report provides the Title I design of Phase 1 fission product facilities at B-Plant which can be provided vith minimum capital expenditures. The facility described in this report accomplishes the overall processing objectives of the facility, namely the recovery and storage of crude strontium-90 and rare-earth concentrates, although certain B-Plant improvements are deferred to later phases of the Fission Product and Waste Calcination Programs.

C-Reactor graphite burnout interim report, 1P-25A(PT-105-532-E)

The oxidation of graphite in the Hanford reactors is of consequence since graphite burnout affects the strength of the moderator. As a means for indication of any highly oxidizing condition within the stack, containers or boats of small weighed samples of reactor-grade graphite are positioned along the length of an empty process channel in each reactor. The rate of oxidation of the monitoring samples, referred to as the burnout rate, is reported as percent weight lose per 1000 operating days (%/KOD). Currently the burnout rate limit is 2%/KOD. This document presents recent burnout data at the C-reactor.

PCCF flow analysis -- DR Reactor

This report contains an analysis of PCCF tube flow and Panellit pressure relations at DR reactor. Supply curves are presented at front header pressures from 480 to 600 psig using cold water and the standard 0.236 inch orifice with taper down stream and the pigtail valve (plug or ball) open. Demand curves are presented for slug column lengths of 200 inches to 400 inches using 1.44 inch O.D. solid poison pieces (either Al or Pb-Cd) and cold water with a rear header pressure of 50 psig. Figure 1 is a graph of Panellit pressure vs. flow with the above supply and demand curves and clearly shows the effect of front header pressure and charge length on flow.
