Acid Formation in the Radiolysis of Phosphorus Esters

The radiolytic decomposition of tributyl phosphate has been show by burr to product gases, acids, and polymers. the acids that are formed can limit the usefulness of tributyl phosphate for the processing of radioactive materials. The study of acid formation on radiolysis therefor becomes important to us for the understanding of the mechanism of acid formation, the influence of added materials and the effect of the structure of organo- phosphorous compounds. Samples of purified esters have been irradiated in the ORNL cobalt source. Conclusions: (1) The formation of acid from tributyl phosphate during irradiation with cobalt gamma rays involves a mechanism that is not a primary step. Evidence has been obtained for a secondary reaction that is minimized by the presence of certain compounds. (2) Toluene acting as an inhibitor for radiolytic formation of acid may indicate the usefulness of an aromatic hydrocarbon diluent in processing. (3) The aromatic hydrocarbon, when phenyl, was not effective when it was part of the molecule. (4) First tests revealed that dibutyl butyl-phosphonate produced less acid the TBP and may warrant further consideration for process application.

Pressure Rise in HRT Shield Due to Reactor and Replacement heat Exchanger Rupture

.Recalculations were made of HRT cell pressures in the event of a simultaneous rupture of the reactor core vessel and the fuel and blanket heat exchangers. These calculations will be applicable after the replacement fuel heat exchanger is installed. The pressure rise in the cell is plotted as a function of time. A maximum cell pressure of 34 psig is achieved ~7 sec after rupture.

Run 21 ended on January 22, so that the reason for an abrupt change in the mixing rate of fuel between the core and blanket could be investigated and a reactor steam-system valve could be repaired."

The Isolation and Purification of Americium

Gram amounts of americium were separated quantitatively from kilogram quantities of lanthanum to yield an americium product approaching 90% purity. The remaining impurity was chiefly yttrium. Elution of americium from 25% loaded Dowex 50 resin column with 0.15 M citric acid— 0.10 M diammonium citrate — 0.3 M ammonium nitrate, pH 3.3 gave a product containing 99% of the americium with a La/Am ratio of 1/100 or less in one fourth of a column volume, in this case about 1 100-fold volume reduction. Approximately 9 g of americium was purified by this method. Elution with 12.8 M hydrochloric acid from a 20 to 30% loaded column gave 90% of the americium in two column volumes of product with a La/Am ratio of about 1/4. About 1 g of americium was purified by this method.

Corrosion data and operational observations are given for six thorium oxide slurry runs made at 300 C in 100A pump loops BS and CS. A new development model of the rotator for an in-pile slurry toroid is described.

Disassembly and Postoperative Examination of the Aircraft Reactor Experiment

The Aircraft Reactor Experiment (ARE)was successfully concluded in November of 1954, and a detailed report of the operation was published the following year. At that time it was thought that an extensive examination of the reactor and system components after disassembly was warranted. It was realized, of course, that the level of radioactivity of the components would necessitate extensive delays in the examinations. Since examination of a few critical ARE samples showed nothing unexpected, much of the planned hot-cell inspection was postponed and complete examination of all but a few specimens was indefinitely suspended. The few examinations that were completed are described in this report, along with a description of the disassembly of the ARE system. Diagrams of the fuel system, sodium system, and off-gas system are presented in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 for reference use in visualizing the disassembly process.

Maintenance of Various Reactor Types

This technical report presents an overview of nuclear reactor maintenance to be used in planning a nuclear reactor. There are certain basic maintenance fundamentals that are common to all types of reactors that may be' incorporated in a power producing facility. Basically, there are only two types of maintenance procedures. The direct type, which is common to conventional steam plants, may be used in some areas where the radioactivity is low enough. In most parts of the plant, maintenance will of necessity be remote due to the high level of radioactivity. For simplicity of description in this report all reactor types are divided into two general classes: solid fuel types and circulating fuel types. The report lists nine types of reactor power plant types with advantages and disadvantages maintenance-wise of each.

Five recent investigations of the critical heat flux in water systems are described. These studies were conducted in the interval from early 1963 through the present. An Elliptic Integral Computer Package for Magnetic Fields, Forces, and Mutual Inductances of Axisymmetric Systems, and a Versatile Line-Tracing Routine

Report describing a set of high-precision routines for the IBM 7090 that perform efficiently the calculations most often required on axially symmetric magnetic systems. The routines compute the vector potential, field components, and the mixed gradient for current systems and for certain idealized distributions of magnetized matter. The programs for the current systems were developed from a set of six equations in elliptic integrals, which suffice when correlations are fully exploited for all the relevant properties of loops and solenoids.

A study of the degree and effects of radiation damage to the motor winding of the HRT 400-! canned motor circulating pumps was made. With the gamma flux estimate and the available radiation damage data, the effective life of the stator windings was estimated to be about one year, for normal operation of the pump and motor.

Second and Third Operating Test of HRT Core Vessel Transition Joint and Expansion Bellows Mockup

Second and third tests were conducted on an expansion bellows and Zircaloy-stainless steel transition joint assembly, duplicating that used in the core-pressure vessel assembly of the HRT. The assembly was exposed for 1140 hours in the second test and and 167 hours in the third to a solution containing 0.04m UO2SO4, 0.02m H2SO4, and 0.005m CuSO4 in a 100A dynamic corrosion loop under conditions simulating reactor startup, shutdown, and steady-state operation. Results indicated that the transition joint assembly as tested was mechanically sound and leak-tight. Pit-type corrosion continued on the expansion bellows where the upper retaining tangent contacts the bellows. Results are included of specimens exposed to the circulation solution during transition joint and bellows test.

A third test of the mockup of the Zircaloy - stainless steel transition joint as used in the HRT reactor vessel was completed. No additional mechanical deflections of the bellows were made, but 12 additional thermal cycles of the unit were carried out. . The joint and bellows functioned properly and were leak-tight. Corrosion of stainless steel in 0.04 m UO2SO4 containing equimolar beryllium sulfate was not greater at 10-15 fps and much less at 15-75 fps, than in HRT solution at 200 and 225 C. Increasing the beryllium sulfate concentration to 0.08 m increased corrosion at 225 C and resulted in an unstable solution at 300 C.

An Assessment of Certain Avenues of Improvement for Nuclear Desalination Technology

From the questions which have been asked, I gather that I am expected to bring you the news of the latest exciting developments in desalination at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. However, the agenda for this meeting does not include reports of unfinished investigations; moreover, although there are some new ideas afoot at Oak Ridge, they are aimed toward the very large stations which are somewhat beyond the scope of the more current interests represented here. So instead of presenting new developments, I would like today to talk about where to look for them--to give you some purely analytical considerations that assess the incentives we have to seed certain improvements in this or that portion of the equipment in a dual-purpose station.
