The following report provides the findings of a 1998 field study over the Hawaiian monk seal in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. These studies evaluate the status and trends of monk seal populations, natural history traits (survival, reproduction, growth, behavior, and feeding habits), and the success of various activities designed to facilitate population growth.

Interview with Brinton Cate, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps who served in World War II from Jackson, Michigan. Cate describes his time as a corporal with the military police and how he was on Iwo Jima when the atomic bomb was dropped, as well as seeing the aftermath at Nagasaki.

Interview with W. R. Barker, a veteran who served as a combat engineer with the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II. It includes a conversation with Barker as he talks freely about his time in basic training at Camp Cook, when Bob Hope visited jungle training in Hawaii, and interactions between U.S. soldiers and the native islanders. He also discusses the Marines mission on Pelilu Island and meeting his brother in the Philippines.

Interview with E. C. May, a navigator in the US Air Corps during WWII. He answers questions about his time in the military overseas and returning home.

Interview with Navy veteran Frank Curre Jr. The interview includes Curre's personal experiences about joining the Navy, boot camp, being aboard the battleship USS Tennessee during the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor, and his subsequent experiences in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Additionally, Curre talks about pre-war shipboard life and training exercises, his activities during the attack on Pearl Harbor, aftermath of the attack, his transfer to the yard minesweeper YMS-102 at Bremerton, Washington, operation around Midway Island, his transfer to the escort carrier Petrof Bay, the Battle of Leyte Gulf, kamikaze attacks, the Okinawa campaign, and continued combat against kamikazes.

Interview with Pete Craig, a veteran of the U.S. Army who served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II from Houston, Texas. Craig describes his time as a Private 1st Class in the Infantry, as well as his experiences in basic training and the places he visited throughout the United States. Included at the end of the transcript is a written summarization by the interviewer, Colby Burmaster, which was provided with the two audiotapes of the interview.

Interview with Sam H. Snoddy, a U. S. Marine during World War II. He served in the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division. After training, he participated in the initial landing at Saipan where he was wounded in the knees and shoulder on the beach by shell fragments. He was loaded onto a hospital ship with several other casualties before going to Hawaii to recuperate. He participated in the Okinawa campaign and spent time at Nagasaki on occupation duty. After being discharged, he went to college on the G. I. Bill, and eventually settled in Texas, where he worked in the oil industry.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Albert Finley. Finley joined the Marine Corps around December of 1943. He provides vivid details of his boot camp experiences. He served with Headquarters Company, 4th Marines, as a radar mechanic on Corsairs, repairing radio and radar gear. Beginning in September of 1944 they traveled to Guam, Kwajalein, Pearl Harbor and Majuro in the Marshall Islands. Finley shares a number of anecdotal stories, including working with POWs. He was discharged in the fall of 1946.

They traveled to Pearl Harbor, which he describes along with his responsibilities with work parties unloading and reloading ships. He assisted with trading out old ammunition for new ammunition. He was transferred to the John Rodgers Naval Air Station in Hawaii. He worked on the Martin Mars seaplanes, repairing and test flying them. He also flew C-54s and the J-3 Piper Cub and shares his experiences. He spent the remainder of his Navy career in Hawaii and was discharged in August of 1946 and joined the reserves. While in the service he made storekeeper 3rd class. In the 1950s he was commissioned into the Air Force.
