The Void Specification (open access)

The Void Specification

The purpose of this memo is to explore more fully the allowable void specification, in part to make it clearer to those doing the day-to-day evaluation and in part to help me understand the ramifications. A simulation of voids in a Be shell is used to support my understanding of Haan's analysis. The key results showing allowable void diameter as a function of void fraction are shown in Figure 6 (p. 8). What is important here is that generally in ''good'' samples we only see small voids, perhaps at most a few tenths of a {micro}m in size. For this void size the shells can be underdense by as much as 10% and still meet the 1 part in 10{sup 4} spec (though there may be other issues with reduced density).

Hydrogen Technology Development and Demonstration at the Savannah River Technology Center (open access)

Hydrogen Technology Development and Demonstration at the Savannah River Technology Center

The Savannah River Technical Center (SRTC) has been active in teaming with academic and industrial partners to advance hydrogen technology. A primary focus of SRTC's R and D has been hydrogen storage using metal and complex hydrides. SRTC and its Hydrogen Technology Laboratory (HyTech) have been very successful in leveraging their defense infrastructure, capabilities and investments to help solve this country's energy problems. Many of HyTech's programs support dual-use applications. HyTech has participated in projects to convert public transit and utility vehicles for operation on hydrogen fuel. Two major projects include the H2Fuel Bus and an Industrial Fuel Cell Vehicle (IFCV) also known as the GATORTM. Both of these projects were funded by DOE and cost shared by industry.

Oral History Interview with Lewis Ferguson, April 23, 2009 transcript

Oral History Interview with Lewis Ferguson, April 23, 2009

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Lewis Ferguson. Ferguson joined the Navy in 1942 under the V-7 Program. After graduating, he received basic training in San Diego. He was then sent to Radar Operator School in Norfolk. Upon completion, he was assigned to the USS Cooper (DD-695). He received further training at Radar Materiel School in Pearl Harbor and was transferred to the USS Massey (DD-778). At the invasion of Okinawa, Ferguson tracked bogeys as far as 200 miles away. Although he could not see the action from his position in the radar shack, he felt the ship shudder as it fired at kamikazes. After the war, the Massey carried troops and mail to the occupation forces in Japan. Ferguson remembers the ship rolling 56 degrees during a typhoon there. He returned home and was discharged in January 1946; Ferguson found work teaching business administration to veterans.
