Study on reduction of accessory-horsepower requirements. Third quarterly progress report (open access)

Study on reduction of accessory-horsepower requirements. Third quarterly progress report

The objective of this study program is to minimize automotive accessory horsepower consumption, and thereby maximize overall vehicle fuel economy, by utilizing continuously variable speed drives or auxiliary power units (APUs) in a standard passenger automobile. As an aid to definitizing accessory performance, load requirements and fuel economy, a baseline vehicle has beeen established. This vehicle is a conventional intermediate size 5- or 6-passenger automobile with a 4.1 to 5.7 liter (250 to 350 cubic inch) displacement, spark ignition engine. Accessories to be considered are the alternator, power steering system, power brakes, air conditioner, cooling fan, water pump and emission control air pump. A program summary of major accomplishments is presented including: accessory drive devices analyses; vehicle computer model fuel economy analyses; improved accessory efficiency analysis; resized engine fuel economy analysis; accessory evaluation matrix completed; drive-systems trade-study completed and the prime concept presented; and variable-speed belt-drive concepts reviewed.

LMFBR large valve development. Static sodium proof-of-principle (POP) test design and analyses interim summary report for the 12. 0-inch rotating offset ball valve internals

This report updates progress made by AMCO to date in the development of the 12-inch rotating offset ball valve, for use in sodium isolation service for the LMFBR Demonstration Plant Intermediate Heat Transport System (IHTS). The work is being performed under Contract No. AT-(04-03)-1035 ERDA SAN. The design incorporates an offset rotating ball in conjunction with a flexible metal lip seal to provide shut-off in liquid sodium at elevated temperatures.

Decommissioning of Division of Military Application equipment at Richland Operations Office for period ending March 31, 1975

The scope of the decommissioning work provides for (1) the removal of all Division of Military Application (DH) fabrication and inspection equipment held in standby status in the 234-5Z Building, (2) disposition of all contaminated equipment and materials removed by packaging for 20-year retrievable storage, (3) reclamation of salvageable materials and equipment for use on site by other Energy Research and Development Administration contractors, and (4) restoration of cleared-out areas for other future Richland Operations Office programs.

BEAM-CAVITY INTERACTION IN ELECTRON STORAGE RINGS (open access)

BEAM-CAVITY INTERACTION IN ELECTRON STORAGE RINGS

A formal expression is obtained for the energy loss per turn, of a rigid bunch of electrons, to a closed cylindrical cavity with quality factor Q. The expression is valid provided the diameter of the entrance and exit ports for the beam are small compared to the bunch length. The effect of the ports is studied in an independent computational method. The energy loss is numerically evaluated for a range of parameters of interest to electron storage rings.

Technology assessment of geothermal energy resource development (open access)

Technology assessment of geothermal energy resource development

Geothermal state-of-the-art is described including geothermal resources, technology, and institutional, legal, and environmental considerations. The way geothermal energy may evolve in the United States is described; a series of plausible scenarios and the factors and policies which control the rate of growth of the resource are presented. The potential primary and higher order impacts of geothermal energy are explored, including effects on the economy and society, cities and dwellings, environmental, and on institutions affected by it. Numerical and methodological detail is included in appendices. (MHR)

Metallurgical factors that contribute to cracking in BWR piping (open access)

Metallurgical factors that contribute to cracking in BWR piping

During the fall of 1974 and early winter of 1975, cracks have been discovered in the 4 in. bypass lines of several Boiling Water Reactors (BWR's) in the United States. Further, similar cracks were discovered at two BWR's in Japan during the same period. More recently, cracks have been discovered in the core spray piping and in a furnace-sensitized "safe end" and adjacent "dutchman" at the Dresden Nuclear Power Station, Unit No. 2. Although inspections at all other U.S. BWR's have not disclosed further instances of cracking in core spray piping, leaking cracks have been found in the core spray piping of two BWR's overseas. Metallurgical examinations of these cracks are not yet complete. The following observations have been made to date. All cracks (except those in the furnace-sensitized safe end and dutchman) occurred in seamless type 304 stainless steel piping or in elbows fabricated from such piping, in the outer heat affected zone of either field or shop welds, in lines isolated from the main primary coolant flow during full power operation, except for the not yet examined cracks in the Monticello bypass lines. The cracks are exclusively intergranular, and occur in metal that has been lightly sensitized by …
