Heat transfer from finned metal cylinders in an air stream

This report presents the results of tests made to supply design information for the construction of metal fins for the cooling of heated cylindrical surfaces by an air stream. A method is given for determining fin dimensions for a maximum heat transfer with the expenditure of a given amount of material for a variety of conditions of air flow and metals.

A Solubility Method of the Determination of Non-Volatile Material in Tetrachloride Charges

Abstract: "This report suggests using methyl acetate extraction of charge material as a means of determining the non-volatile residue. It is shown that the volatile constituents of charge material are all extremely soluble in methyl acetate whereas the non-volatile materials are quite insoluble. Percent NVH on several samples of charge material by this method are reported and discussed."

Memorandum presenting a preliminary investigation made in the two-dimensional low-turbulence tunnel on an NACA 64A010 airfoil with permeable surfaces to obtain an indication of the stabilizing effect of area suction on the laminar boundary layer. Although the airfoil surface had many waves and irregularities of contour, the data corroborated qualitatively the theoretically predicted stabilizing effect of area suction on a smooth flat plate.

THE HEAT CAPACITY OF U$sub 3$O$sub 8$ POWDER AS A FUNCTION OF TEMPERATURE (400-1800 F)

The mean heat capacity of a sample of powdered U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ was determined as a function of temperature from measurements of heat content. A thin-walled nickel capsule containing the material was heated in an electric furnace and dropped into a water calorimeter The Mean heat capacity values calculated from the experimental data were nearly constant over the temperature range, room temperture to 250-975 deg C (482-1790 deg F). The average value was 0.074 plus or minus 0.004 cal gm/sup -1EDE/C/sup -2/ (0.074 plus or minus 0.004 Btu lb/sup -1 deg F/du p -1/). From 975-1100 deg C (1790-2012 deg F) a small rise was observed. Wind-Tunnel Tests of a 0.16-Scale Model of the Douglas MX-656 Airplane at High Subsonic Speeds, 1, Stability and Control Characteristics

Wind tunnel tests of the 0.16-scale Douglas MX-656 model were made at low and high subsonic Mach numbers to investigate the static longitudinal- and lateral stability characteristics. The tests shows that undesirable changes in longitudinal stability at the stall were apparently caused by an altered downwash pattern at the tail. The jettisonable nose fins were highly destabilizing. Compressibility effects for the test Mach numbers were not detrimental to the longitudinal- or lateral-stability characteristics.

The New Element Berkelium (Atomic Number 97) (open access)

The New Element Berkelium (Atomic Number 97)

An isotope of the element with atomic number 97 has been discovered as a product of the helium-ion bombardment of americium. This isotope decays with the emission of alpha-particles of maximum energy 6.72 Mev (30 percent) and it emits lower energy alpha-particles of energies 6.55 Mev (53 percent) and 6.20 Mev (17 percent). The half-life of this isotope is 4.6 hours and it decays primarily by electron capture with about 0.1 percent branching decay by alpha-particle emission. The mass number is probably 243 as indicated by chemical separation of the alpha-particle and electron-capture daughters. The name berkelium, symbol Bk, is proposed for element 97. The chemical separation of element 97 from the target material and other reaction products was made by combinations of precipitation and ion exchange adsorption methods making use of its anticipated (III) and (IV) oxidation states and its position as a member of the actinide transition series. The distinctive chemical properties made use of in its separation and the equally distinctive decay properties of the particular isotope constitute the principal evidence for the new element.

Report presenting an investigation of the effect of a 20-percent-semispan deflectable wing-tip control on the low-speed lateral and longitudinal characteristics of a wing with the leading edge swept back 47.5 degrees, an aspect ratio of 3.5, and circular-arc-airfoil sections. The results indicate that the 20-percent-semispan wing-tip control should provide adequate lateral control over the angle-of-attack range investigated. Results regarding the effect of tip control on lateral characteristics and effect of wing-tip-control deflection on longitudinal characteristics are provided.

Nuclear rockets

A systems analysis is made of a class of nuclear-propelled rockets in combination with chemical boosters. Various missions are considered including the delivery of 5000-lb payload 5500 nautical miles, the placement of a satellite in an orbit about the earth and the delivery of a payload to escape velocity. The reactors considered are of the heterogeneous type utilizing graphite fuel elements in a matrix of Be or hydrogenous moderator. Liquid hydrogen and ammonia are considered as propellants. Graphical results are presented which show the characteristics and performance of the nuclear rockets as the design parameters are varied. It should be emphasized that this report is not in any sense intended as a handbook of rocket parameters; it is intended only as a guide for determining areas of interest.
