An analytical study was designed to establish the reproducibility of a petroleum pitch system as a function of the sampling period, and to obtain information on the molecular structures and compositions of these materials. Samples of petroleum pitch and the feedstocks from which the pitches were made were received monthly from the vendor during a 12-month sampling period, and were subsequently analyzed along with control samples. Properties obtained included molecular weight and distribution analyses, softening points, viscosites, benzene insolubles, elemental compositions, and coke yields. Month-to-month variability in the properties of the feedstock was greater than that observed for the corresponding pitch samples, indicating that the pitch-producing process has a leveling effect on the precursor property differences. Studies on molecular structures present in pitch and feedstock materials were made using nuclear magnetic resonance techniques that allowed an estimation of sizes and compositions of aromatic and aliphatic groups, and the number of alkyl substituents per molecule. Models were suggested that fit these average properties. (auth)

A partial wave decomposition was made of the final state 3 pi system produced in the reaction pi /sup -/+ A yields ( pi /sup -/ pi /sup -/ pi /sup + /) + A at 23 GeV/c and for the elements C, Ai, Cu, and Ag. For low 3 pi masses, the 1/sup +/ state is dominant and its t' distribution shows the expected combination of coherent and incoherent components. The t' distribution of the 2/ sup +/ A/sub 2/ state also requires both coherent and incoherent components. (auth)

An ion microprobe mass analyzer was used to investigate the reaction pathway for the formation of lithium hydroxide and lithium oxide on freshly cleaved lithium deuteride surfaces. Mass spectra were obtained from the lithium deuteride surfaces before and after exposure to room air, and the composition of the corrosion film was determined by depth-profiling methods. The corrosion film appears to be layered in the following manner: lithium hydroxide on lithium oxide on lithium deuteride. (auth)
