From Summary: "An analytical investigation was made to determine from component performance characteristics the effect of air bleed at the compressor outlet on the acceleration characteristics of a typical high-pressure-ratio single-spool turbojet engine. Consideration of several operating lines on the compressor performance map with two turbine-inlet temperatures showed that for a minimum acceleration time the turbine-inlet temperature should be the maximum allowable, and the operating line on the compressor map should be as close to the surge region as possible throughout the speed range. Operation along such a line would require a continuously varying bleed area."

The following report concerns the application of a relaxation mesh method for the determination of the average flux within the moderator of a light water moderated, 1.027 per cent U-235, hexagonal lattice with a volume ratio (V_H2O + V_Al)/V_Uranium of 4:1. It was hoped that the calculation would enable one to determine any differences in flux which might result from the fact that the unit cell is a hexagon instead of a cylinder. Because we were primarily interested in the effect due to geometry we applied the same theory, diffusion theory, to the hexagon by means of the mesh method and to the equivalent cylinder.

"Under the assumption that a wing, body, or wing-body combination is slender or flying at near sonic velocity, expressions are given which permit the calculation of pressure in the immediate vicinity of the configuration. The disturbance field, in both subsonic and supersonic flight, is shown to consist of two-dimensional disturbance fields extending laterally and a longitudinal field that depends on the streamwise growth of cross-sectional area. A discussion is also given of couplings, between lifting and thickness effects, that necessarily arise as a result of the quadratic dependence of pressure on the induced velocity components" (author).

This report discusses the proposal to expand the existing 224-U Building from an instantaneous rate of 13.5 tons of uranium per day to 18.5 tons per day. This is to be accomplished by the installation of two additional 8{prime} calcining kettles (or pots) available through the Atomic Energy Commission from Luckey, Ohio. It is the purpose of this report to present calculations and recommendations upon which design work is proceeding. This expansion is to utilize existing facilities of 224-U whenever possible and this report forms a record of the methods used in evaluating equipment and systems. Included are analysis of pot ventilation and pot unloading, stress analysis of the new pots, radiation hazard calculations and a composite schematic.

Casting of Blanket Bricks, Ring, Plug, and Control Rods for the Experimental Breeder Reactor (CP-4)

The cup assembly of the Experimental Breeder Reactor (EBR) consists of blanket bricks, inner rings, and safety plug, all of natural uranium. The design of the finish machined brick is shown in Figure 1. These pie shaped bricks when stacked together, 12 bricks arranged in circular form and stacked seven rings high, comprise the cylindrical portion of the outer blanket, 17.875" I.D. x 30.875" O.D. after machining and canning. The inner ring, which is shown in Figure 2, fits inside the bottom layer of bricks. The circular opening in the center of the inner ring is closed by the safety plug shown in Figure 3.

Abstract: Anomalous radioactivity and uranium minerals have been found on the dumps of the Comet, Gray Eagle, and Silver Hill mines situated along the Comet-Gray Eagle shear zone. The shear zone is from 50 to 200 feet in width and has been traced 5 1/2 miles. The Gray Eagle mine is currently being reopened but no underground work, with the exception of a few shallow shafts and adits, has been done between the Gray Eagle and Comet mines. Because of the high U3 08 content of the samples from the Comet and Gray Eagle dumps, it is recommended that a minimum of four diamond drill holes totaling 3, 000 feet be drilled by AEC between the two mines to intersect the shear zone 300 to 500 feet below the surface. This drilling should be made contingent upon the results of the Gray Eagle exploration.

Results indicated that the accuracy of the predicted indicated angles of attack was not sufficient to eliminate the necessity of a flight calibration of a detector mounted on a fuselage.

From Summary: "An analysis was made to permit the calculation of the effectiveness of oxide coatings in retarding the transient heat flow into turbine blades when the combustion gas temperature of a turbojet engine is suddenly changed. The analysis is checked with experimental data obtained from a turbojet engine whose blades were coated with two different coating materials (silicon dioxide and boric oxide) by adding silicone oil and tributyl borate to the engine fuel. The very thin coatings (approximately 0.001 in.) that formed on the blades produced a negligible effect on the turbine-blade transient temperature response. With the analysis discussed here, it was possible to predict the turbine rotor-blade temperature response with a maximum error of 40 F."

Coring pattern for K Pile

Pile operation data from 100-H and 100-C has demonstrated that symmetrical heat generation (flux distribution) can be attained with enrichment or enrichment and shortened control rods. The previous coring pattern was based on 100-H operation prior to enrichment and therefore was designed to accomodate an asymmetrical flux distribution. Because the present K reactor design includes shortened control rods and operation will probably include enrichment, the coring design has been revised to a symmetrical pattern. The purpose of this document is to present the coring pattern recommended for the 105-K moderator design.
