Rate Coefficient Measurements and Theoretical Analysis of the OH + (E)‑CF₃CH==CHCF₃ Reaction (open access)

Rate Coefficient Measurements and Theoretical Analysis of the OH + (E)‑CF₃CH==CHCF₃ Reaction

Rate coefficients, k, for the gas-phase reaction of the OH radical with (E)CF3CHCHCF3 ((E)-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluoro-2-butene, HFO-1336mzz(E)) were measured over a range of temperatures (211−374 K) and bath gas pressures (20−300 Torr; He, N2) using a pulsed laser photolysis−laser-induced fluorescence (PLP−LIF) technique. k1(T) was independent of pressure over this range of conditions with k1(296 K) = (1.31 ± 0.15) × 10−13 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 and k1(T) = (6.94 ± 0.80) × 10−13exp[−(496 ± 10)/T] cm 3 molecule−1 s−1, where the uncertainties are 2σ, and the pre-exponential term includes estimated systematic error. Rate coefficients for the OD reaction were also determined over a range of temperatures (262−374 K) at 100 Torr (He). The OD rate coefficients were ∼15% greater than the OH values and showed similar temperature dependent behavior with k2(T) = (7.52 ± 0.44) × 10−13exp[−(476 ± 20)/T] and k2(296 K) = (1.53 ± 0.15) × 10−13 cm3 molecule−1 s−1. The rate coefficients for reaction 1 were also measured using a relative rate technique between 296 and 375 K with k1(296 K) measured to be (1.22 ± 0.1) × 10−13 cm3 molecule−1 s−1, in agreement with the PLP−LIF results. In addition, the 296 K rate coefficient for the O3 +( E)CF3CHCHCF3 reaction …

A Highly Contiguous and Annotated Genome Assembly of the Lesser Prairie-Chicken (Tympanuchus pallidicinctus)

Article asserts that the Lesser Prairie-Chicken (Tympanuchus pallidicinctus; LEPC) is an iconic North American prairie grouse, renowned for ornate and spectacular breeding season displays, a species that has been declining in population across much of its historical range, with corresponding precipitous declines in contemporary population abundance, largely due to climatic and anthropogenic factors. The authors describe an annotated reference genome that was generated from a LEPC sample collected from the southern DPS.

Seeing plants as never before

Authors of the article assert that imaging has long supported our ability to understand the inner life of plants, their development, and response to a dynamic environment. The purpose of this review was to provide the scientific community with an overview of current imaging methods, which rely variously on either nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectrometry (MS) or infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and to present some examples of their application in order to illustrate their utility.

POSMM: an efficient alignment-free metagenomic profiler that complements alignment-based profiling

Article presents POSMM, Python-Optimized Standard Markov Model classifier, which is a new incarnation of the Markov model approach to metagenomic sequence analysis. The authors claim that by combining POSMM with ultrafast classifiers such as Kraken2, their complementary strengths can be leveraged to produce higher overall accuracy in metagenomic sequence classification than by either as a standalone classifier. POSMM is a user-friendly and highly adaptable tool designed for broad use by the metagenome scientific community.

Gene-based association tests using GWAS summary statistics and incorporating eQTL

Article proposes a powerful and computationally efficient gene-based association test, called Overall. Using extended Simes procedure, Overall aggregates information from three types of traditional gene-based association tests and also incorporates expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) information into a gene-based association test using GWAS summary statistics. The results show that this newly developed method can identify more significant genes than other methods.

Assembling Artificial Photosynthetic Models in Water Using β-Cyclodextrin-Conjugated Phthalocyanines as Building Blocks

Article describes how two water-soluble zinc(II) phthalocyanines substituted with two or four permethylated β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) moieties at the α positions have been utilized as building blocks for the construction of artificial photosynthetic models in water. The hydrophilic and bulky β-CD moieties not only can increase the water solubility of the phthalocyanine core and prevent its stacking in water but can also bind with a tetrasulfonated zinc(II) porphyrin (ZnTPPS) and/or sodium 2-anthraquinonesulfonate (AQ) in water through host–guest interactions.

The EAR-motif of the Cys2/His2-type Zinc Finger Protein Zat7 Plays a Key Role in the Defense Response of Arabidopsis to Salinity Stress

Article reporting that transgenic Arabidopsis plants constitutively expressing the Cys2/His2 zinc finger protein Zat7 have suppressed growth and are more tolerant to salinity stress. Genetic Differentiation of the South Florida Red-Shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus extimus) from the Nominate Subspecies (Buteo lineatus lineatus)

Article discusses how the south Florida subspecies of the Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus extimus) is distinctly paler and smaller than other subspecies, reproduces at a lower rate, and can occupy very different habitats such as open marshes and grasslands with only scattered trees. The authors evaluated population differentiation between the south Florida population of Red-shouldered Hawks and two populations of eastern Red-shouldered Hawks (B. l. lineatus) in suburban (Cincinnati) and rural (Hocking Hills) environments in southern Ohio.

Relaxation time approximations in PAOFLOW 2.0

Article presents the implementation of relaxation time approximation models in the calculation of Boltzmann transport in PAOFLOW 2.0 and applies those to model band-structures. In addition, using a self-consistent fitting of the model parameters to experimental conductivity data, the authors provide a flexible tool to extract scattering rates with high accuracy. They illustrate the approximations using simple models and then apply the method to GaAs, Si, Mg₃Sb₂, and CoSb₃.

Transgenic manipulation of triacylglycerol biosynthetic enzymes in B. napus alters lipid-associated gene expression and lipid metabolism

Article asserts that oilseed rape (Brassica napus) is an important crop that is cultivated for the oil (mainly triacylglycerol; TAG) it produces in its seeds. The author's results show that up-regulation of these key enzymes differentially affects lipid composition and distribution as well as lipid-associated gene expression, providing important information which could be used to improve crop properties by metabolic engineering.
