Camp Ford, located near Tyler, Texas was established in 1863 as a Confederate prison camp during the Civil War. Over the course of two years, the camp held about 6,000 prisoners and was one of the largest Confederate prison camps west of the Mississippi River. George Washington Simmons, pictured holding a pail, was the paymaster of the USS Clifton, captured at Sabine Pass on September 8, 1863. The crew was initially incarcerated at Camp Groce near Hempstead, but the prisoners were all moved to Camp Ford in December 1863. Simmons was in the Prisoner exchange that occurred at Red River Landing on February 25, 1865. The lithograph made from his sketch was published in New York on March 4, 1865, only a week after his exchange.
