From Summary: "As part of a study of means of airspeed measurement at transonic speeds the use of static orifices located ahead of the wing tip has been investigated for possible application to service or research airspeed installations. The local static pressure and local Mach number have been measured at a distance of 1 tip chord ahead of the wing tip of a model of a swept-wing fighter airplane at true Mach numbers between 0.7 and 1.08 by the NACA wing-flow method. All measurements were made at or near zero lift. The local Mach number was found to be essentially equal to the true Mach numbers less than about 0.90."

Radiation Dose Received by Passengers and Crew on Planes Carrying the Maximum Number of Radiation Units

The dose of ionizing radiation received by passengers and crew members traveling on commercial airlines which transport radioisotopes is of interest to all persons who travel the airways frequently. Tariff regulations permit the air transport of 40 units of radioactive materials where one unit represents a quantity of radioisotopes which when packaged delivers a dose rate of one mr/hr at a distance of one meter from the center of the package. Using five different types of commercial aircraft, shipments of radioisotopes were simulated and dose levels determined at various locations in the aircraft under conditions normal to commercial travel. The survey indicates that the tariff regulations should be amended giving consideration to the type of aircraft involved.

Fast Neutron Cross Sections: Corrections to LA-1714 and a Correlation of 3 Mev Values

Recent measurements on the long counter efficiency in which comparisons were made with the (n, p) scattering cross section, additional variations in efficiency were found which varied slowly with neutron energy but were still correlated with the total neutron cross section of carbon. Because of these variations in efficiency there are errors in the fission cross sections reported in LA-1714. Corrections to these data have been given here.

Report presenting a rough-water landing investigation of a model of a hydro-ski seaplane design to determine the effect on the landing motions and vertical accelerations of mounting the hydro-ski on shock-absorber struts. The tests occurred at one landing trim and wave height over a range of wave length for three hydro-ski configurations. Results regarding the landings, effect of artificial stabilization, damping in trim, and reductions in vertical accelerations are provided.

Gold Alloys as Process-Solution-Lubricated Sleeve Bearings

Ten materials in which gold was alloyed with copper, silver, graphite, platinum, nickel or zinc (compositions given in Table 1) were evaluated in this study. Corrosion tests to determine the resistance of the alloys to boiling 60 to 65% nitric acid showed that with the exception of an alloy containing 51 wt % gold and 49 wt % graphite (Gold Graphalloy 811) which dissolved in 48 hr and an alloy containing 90 wt % gold and 10 wt % graphite which lost 2.3 wt % in 240 hr the alloys were essentially corrosion resistant.

Preliminary investigation of the delay of turbulent flow separation by means of wedge-shaped bodies

Report presenting an experimental investigation of pyramidal, wedge-like bodies as devices for delaying separation of a turbulent boundary layer. Within certain limits, effective boundary-layer control was obtainable with wedges of different geometry, but the drag of the wedges was high, making it desirable to keep their size to a minimum. Greater maximum lift was obtainable by placing the wedges well forward along the chord and by allowing open spaces between adjacent wedges.

Minimum-drag ducted and pointed bodies of revolution based on linearized supersonic theory

The linearized drag integral for bodies of revolution at supersonic speeds is presented in a double-integral form which is not based on slender-body approximations but which reduces to the equal slender-body expression in the proper limit. With the aid of a suitably chosen auxiliary condition, the minimum-external-wave-drag problem is solved for a transition section connecting two semi-infinite cylinders. The projectile tip is a special case and is compared with the Von Karman projectile tip. Calculations are presented which indicate that the method of analysis gives good first-order results in the moderate supersonic range.

End Seals for "Cored" Slugs

As potentially suitable alternate methods of installing closure plugs in cored slugs, four different schemes were considered. One of these schemes, whereby a flat chamfered uranium disc is crimped into a counterbored recess at each end of the bare slug after pickling, was developed to a workable state, and partially evaluated prior to reassignment of the job to another group. From the results of initial evaluation tests, this process appears to provide leak-free core closures and offers economic benefits that make it attractive as a production method, should cored slugs be adopted as standard.
