A simplified theoretical method of determining the characteristics of a lifting rotor in forward flight

Theoretical derived expressions for the flapping, the thrust, the torque, and the profile drag-lift ratio of nonfeathering rotor with hinged, rectangular, linearly twisted blades are given as simple functions of the inflow velocity and the blade pitch. Representative values of the coefficients of each of the terms in these expressions are tabulated for a series of specified values of the tip-speed ratio. Analysis indicates that the tabulated values can be used to calculate, with reasonable accuracy, the characteristics of any rotor of conventional design.

The next problem will be to achieve a point-by point flow-direction record, whereby the test procedure must be simplified, accelerated, and the degree of accuracy of the test data improved" (p. 1).

Wind-tunnel investigation of plain ailerons for a wing with a full-span flap consisting of an inboard Fowler and an outboard retractable split flap

Report presenting an investigation in the 7- by 10-foot wind tunnel of three plain ailerons on an NACA 23012 wing with full-span combinations of Fowler and split-type flaps. Static rolling, yawing, and hinge moments were determined and are presented for several angles of attack and flap deflection. The results indicated that a plain sealed aileron with internal balance will provide lateral control for airplanes equipped with full-span combinations of slotted and split-type flaps.

Compression tests of some 17S-T aluminum-alloy specimens of I cross section

Report presenting testing of specimens cut from a specially extruded I-beam of 17S-T aluminum alloy with one flange wider than the other under axial compression. Only the two longest specimens failed as columns, while the shorter ones failed by local buckling. The agreement between experimental and calculated values of critical stress can be improved by considering the effect of restraint at the loaded edges of the web and adopting a more accurate buckling treatment beyond the elastic range.

"Compressive tests were made of two series of stiffened circular cylindrical shells under axial load. All the shells were 16 inches in diameter by 24 inches in length and were made of aluminum-alloy sheet curved to the proper radius and welded with one longitudinal weld. The ratios of diameter to thickness of shell wall in the two series of specimens were 258 and 572" (p. 1).

Shear lag in box beams methods of analysis and experimental investigations

The bending stresses in the covers of box beams or wide-flange beams differ appreciably from the stresses predicted by the ordinary bending theory on account of shear deformation of the flanges. The problem of predicting these differences has become known as the shear-lag problem. The first part of this paper deals with methods of shear-lag analysis suitable for practical use. The second part of the paper describes strain-gage tests made by the NACA to verify the theory. Three tests published by other investigators are also analyzed by the proposed method. The third part of the paper gives numerical examples illustrating the methods of analysis. An appendix gives comparisons with other methods, particularly with the method of Ebner and Koller.

Experimental Investigations on Freely Exposed Ducted Radiators

This report deals with the relation between the open areas, the drag, and the air flow as observed on freely exposed, ducted radiators - the air conductivity being modified from zero to one unit. In conjunction with theoretical results, the individual components of the drag of ducted radiators are discussed and general rules established for low-loss ducts. The influence of the wall thickness of the ducts, of the length ratio of the exit, and the effects of sonic velocity on diffusers are dealt with by special measurement.

"Various problems in connection with engine design involve flow-discharge calculations which are rendered difficult both on account of the large number of external variables that enter into the computation - i.e., changes in discharge area during the process, change in volume of the cylinder, pressure, etc., and changes in the thermal constants themselves of the flow medium. A fairly accurate solution that does not involve an excessive amount of labor can be obtained only through the extensive use of i-s tables. In the present report, a solution is offered in the form of a different method making use of the I-S table of Lutz and Wolf" (p. 1).

Tests of Round and Flat Spoilers on a Tapered Wing in the NACA 19-Foot Pressure Wind Tunnel

"Several arrangements of round and flat spanwise spoilers attached to the upper surface of a tapered wing were tested in the NACA 19-foot pressure wind tunnel to determine the most effective type, location, and size of spoiler necessary to reduce greatly the lift on the wings of large flying boats when moored. The effect of the various spoilers on the lift, the drag, and the pitching-moment characteristics of the tapered wing was measured over a range of angles of attack from zero to maximum lift. The most effective type of spoiler was found to be the flat type with no space between it and the wing surface" (p. 1).
