Effects of wing-tip turrets on the aerodynamic characteristics of a typical bomber-wing model

Report presenting wind-tunnel tests up to a Mach number of 0.85 to determine the effects of wing-tip gun turrets on the aerodynamic characteristics of a typical bomber-wing model. Lift, drag, and pitching-moment data are presented for the wing alone; for the wing with the turrets in the clean condition; and for the wing and the turrets with guns and sighting equipment. The turrets had negligible effect on the lift and pitching-moment characteristics of the wing.

Report presenting a wind-tunnel investigation of two NACA 7-series type airfoils, one with 17.7-percent chord thickness and one with 15.4-percent chord thickness, each quipped with a 30-percent-airfoil-chord double slotted flap, a slot-lip aileron, and a trailing-edge Frise aileron with two amounts of overhang balance. Measurements of airfoil lift and drag, Frise aileron hinge moment, and slot-lip aileron hinge moment were obtained through a large range of deflection of flap, Frise aileron, and slot-lip aileron and section angle of attack. Satisfactory lateral control can be obtained by using this combination of airfoils, flaps, and ailerons.

On some reciprocal relations in the theory of nonstationary flows

In the theory of nonstationary flows about airfoils, the "indicial lift" function ksub1(s) of Wagner and the "alternating lift" function c(k) of Theodorsen have fundamental significance. This paper reports on some interesting relations of the nature of Fourier transforms that exist between these functions. General problems in transient flows about airfoils may be given a unified broad treatment when these functions are employed. Certain approximate results also are reported which are of notable simplicity, and an analogy with transient electrical flows is drawn.

Investigation of damping liquids for aircraft instruments 2

"Data are presented on the kinematic viscosity, in the temperature range -50 degrees to +30 degrees C. of pure liquids and of solutions of animal oils, vegetable oils, mineral oils, glycerine, and ethylene glycol in various low freezing point solvents. It is shown that the thermal coefficient of kinematic viscosity as a function of the kinematic viscosity of the solutions of glycerine and ethylene glycol in alcohols is practically independent of the temperature and the chemical composition of the individual liquids. This is similarly true for the mineral oil group and, for a limited temperature interval, for the pure animal and vegetable oils. The efficiency of naphthol, hydroquinone, and diphenylamine to inhibit the change of viscosity of poppyseed and linseed oils was also investigated" (p. 679).

Continuous Electrochemical Determination of Oxygen in Gases

To forestall the oxidation of graphite in HAPO reactors, a process specification provides that the oxygen concentration in pile gas should be kept to a minimum. Close control in maintaining this limit is difficult when only periodic samples are taken because laboratory results are always obtained long after any required corrections should have been made. A continuous-type analyzer that provides immediate knowledge of the oxygen concentration eliminates these time delays.

Report presenting testing conducted to determine the force and pressure-recovery characteristics of a model utilizing a single-shock spike-type inlet with a perforated cowl. The use of the cowl resulted in the attainment of a high pressure recovery at zero angle of attack, but it was accompanied by a relatively large increase in external drag as compared with nonperforated inlets of the same proportions. Results regarding the characteristics at zero angle of attack, effects of changes in angle of attack and Mach number, and performance of perforations are provided.

"The upper limit of the column strength of structural members composed of thin material is the maximum axial stress such members can carry when short enough to fail locally, by crinkling. This stress is a function of the mechanical properties of the material and of the geometrical shape of the cross section. The bending strength, as measured by the modulus of rupture, of structural members is also a function of these same variables. Tests were made of round tubes of chromium-molybdenum steel and of duralumin to determine the crinkling strengths and the bending strengths in terms of the specified yield strength and the ratio of diameter to thickness" (p. 387).

Some Observations Regarding Rare-Earth Lactates

From abstract: "Lactates of all the rare earths except lanthanum, cerium, and praseodymium were prepared and studied. In the case of lanthanum, cerium, and praseodymium the lactates are apparently so soluble that they cannot be crystallized directly from aqueous solution. Products obtained by addition of anhydrous ethanol to sirupy solutions of the light-rare-earth lactates were not well characterized and were deliquescent. Neodymium lactate trihydrate was prepared only by the addition of alcohol to a sirupy solution. Since it was not as deliquescent as the lactates of lanthanum, cerium, and praseodymium, some of its properties could be studied. The lactates of all the other rare earths, samarium through lutetium, as well as the lactate of yttrium, separated readily from aqueous media as trihydrates--the solubility of the hydrated lactate decreasing as the atomic number of the rare earth increased. Thermal decomposition of the crystalline lactates, except those of neodymium and samarium, proceeded through dihydrated and anhydrous states to a composition corresponding roughly to LnlacCO3 at a temperature of about 290-300°C. Ln2(CO3)3 or Ln2O(Co3)2 were observed. In order to make a comparison, thermal decomposition of the rare-earth glycolates was studied also. Solubilities in water at both 20 and 60°C have been tabulated."

Free-spinning wind-tunnel tests of a low-wing monoplane with systematic changes in wings and tails IV: effect of center-of-gravity location

Eight wings and three tails, covering a wide range of aerodynamic characteristics, were independently ballasted so as to be interchangeable with no change in mass distribution. For each of the 24 resulting wing-tail combinations, observations were made of the steady spin for four control settings and of recoveries for five control manipulations. The results are presented in the form of charts comparing the spin characteristics. The tests are part of a general investigation being made in the NACA free-spinning tunnel to determine the effects of systematic changes in wing and tail arrangement upon the steady-spin and the recovery characteristics of a conventional low-wing monoplane for various load distributions.
