On flow of electrically conducting fluids over a flat plate in the presence of a transverse magnetic field

The use of a magnetic field to control the motion of electrically conducting fluids is studied. The incompressible boundary-layer solutions are found for flow over a flat plate when the magnetic field is fixed relative to the plate or to the fluid. The equations are integrated numerically for the effect of the transverse magnetic field on the velocity and temperature profiles, and hence, the skin friction and rate of heat transfer. It is concluded that the skin friction and the heat-transfer rate are reduced when the transverse magnetic field is fixed relative to the plate and increased when fixed relative to the fluid. The total drag is increased in all of the areas.

A variational theorem is presented for a body undergoing creep. Solutions to problems of the creep behavior of plates, columns, beams, and shells can be obtained by means of the direct methods of the calculus of variations in conjunction with the stated theorem. The application of the theorem is illustrated for plates and columns by the solution of two sample problems.

"A program to investigate the aerodynamic heat transfer of a nonisothermal hemisphere-cylinder has been conducted in the Langley 11-inch hypersonic tunnel at a Mach number of 6.8 and a Reynolds number from approximately 0.14 x 10(6) to 1.06 x 10(6) based on diameter and free-stream conditions. The experimental heat-transfer coefficients were slightly less over the whole body than those predicted by the theory of Stine and Wanlass (NACA technical note 3344) for an isothermal surface. For stations within 45 degrees of the stagnation point the heat-transfer coefficients could be correlated by a single relation between local Stanton number and local Reynolds number" (p. 1001).

Comparisons indicate that all the methods give good accuracy when applied to a second-order system; the main difference is the required computing time. The methods generally classified as inverse Laplace transform methods were found to be most effective in determining the response to a unit impulse from frequency-response data of higher order systems. An analysis of once-per-revolution oscillating aerodynamic thrust loads on single-rotation propellers on tractor airplanes at zero yaw

A simplified procedure is shown for calculating the once-per-revolution oscillating aerodynamic thrust loads on propellers of tractor airplanes at zero yaw. The only flow field information required for the application of the procedure is a knowledge of the upflow angles at the horizontal center line of the propeller disk. Methods are presented whereby these angles may be computed without recourse to experimental survey of the flow field. The loads computed by the simplified procedure are compared with those computed by a more rigorous method and the procedure is applied to several airplane configurations which are believed typical of current designs. The results are generally satisfactory.

Theoretical analysis of incompressible flow through a radial-inlet centrifugal impeller at various weight flows

A method for the solution of the incompressible nonviscous flow through a centrifugal impeller, including the inlet region, is presented. Several numerical solutions are obtained for four weight flows through an impeller at one operating speed. These solutions are refined in the leading-edge region. The results are presented in a series of figures showing streamlines and relative velocity contours. A comparison is made with the results obtained by using a rapid approximate method of analysis.

A convenient and accurate numerical solution of the response equations is developed for the case of discrete-gust encounter, an exact solution is made for the simpler case of continuous-sinusoidal-gust encounter, and the procedure is outlined for treating the more realistic condition of continuous random atmospheric turbulence, based on the methods of generalized harmonic analysis. Correlation studies between flight and calculated results are then given to evaluate the influence of wing bending flexibility on the structural response to gusts of two twin-engine transports and one four-engine bomber" (p. 1).

Minimum-drag ducted and pointed bodies of revolution based on linearized supersonic theory

The linearized drag integral for bodies of revolution at supersonic speeds is presented in a double-integral form which is not based on slender-body approximations but which reduces to the equal slender-body expression in the proper limit. With the aid of a suitably chosen auxiliary condition, the minimum-external-wave-drag problem is solved for a transition section connecting two semi-infinite cylinders. The projectile tip is a special case and is compared with the Von Karman projectile tip. Calculations are presented which indicate that the method of analysis gives good first-order results in the moderate supersonic range.

The result is a generalization of the plane flow concept of displacement thickness introduced in order to describe how a thin boundary layer distorts the outer nonviscous flow. Sound from a two-blade propeller at supersonic tip speeds

Report presents the results of sound measurements at static conditions made for a two-blade 47-inch-diameter propeller in the tip Mach number range 0.75 to 1.30. For comparison, spectrums have been obtained at both subsonic and supersonic tip speeds. In addition, the measured data are compared with calculations by the theory of Gutin which has previously been found adequate for predicting the sound at subsonic tip speeds. Curves are presented from which the maximum over-all noise levels in free space may be estimated if the power, tip Mach number, and distance are known.

Report presents the results of a flight investigation conducted on a typical high-wing personal-owner airplane to determine the effect of control centering springs on apparent spiral stability. Apparent spiral stability is the term used to describe the spiraling tendencies of an airplane in uncontrolled flight as affected both by the true spiral stability of the perfectly trimmed airplane and by out-of-trim control settings. Centering springs were used in both the aileron and rudder control systems to provide both a positive centering action and a means of trimming the airplane.

The results of tests of 22 triangular wings, representing two leading-edge shapes for each of 11 apex angles, at Mach numbers 1.62, 1.92, and 1.40 are presented and compared with theory. All wings have a common thickness ratio of 8 percent and a common maximum-thickness point at 18 percent chord. Lift, drag, and pitching moment are given for all wings at each Mach number. The relation of transition in the boundary layer, shocks on the wing surfaces, and characteristics of the pressure distributions is discussed for several wings.

"An analysis and calculations on the stability of the free laminar boundary layer between parallel streams were made for an incompressible fluid using the Tollmien-Schlichting theory of small disturbances. Because the boundary conditions are at infinity, two solutions of the Orr-Sommerfeld stability equations need not be considered, and the remaining two solutions are exponential in character at the infinite boundaries. The calculations show that the flow is unstable except for very low Reynolds numbers" (p. 571).
