Acquired immunologic tolerance in chimeras and histocompatibility factors in cattle and their relationship to those in humans. Final report. [Gamma radiation] (open access)

Acquired immunologic tolerance in chimeras and histocompatibility factors in cattle and their relationship to those in humans. Final report. [Gamma radiation]

During the course of this project we have studied 35 pairs of chimeric cattle twins. It is now clear that fractionated doses of whole-body /sup 60/Co irradiation can cause marked shifts in the proportions of the two erythrocyte populations that make up the chimeric mixture. However, it has not been possible to eliminate one of the two cell types and thus abrogate the acquired immunologic tolerance. The results of our extensive skin-grafting experiments are remarkable because they show that a chimeric twin may mount a sufficient immune response to reject its cotwin's skin while remaining completely tolerant to erythropoietic elements of its cotwin. In conjunction with these studies, we have acquired sufficient data to define a major histocompatibility locus in cattle using alloimmune anti-lymphocyte typing sera as well as the mixed lymphocyte culture technic. This project has also yielded a considerable number of new immunogenetic parameters for cattle, monkeys and birds. Such parameters are useful for basic and applied studies in immunology.

Air change measurements using a tracer gas technique (open access)

Air change measurements using a tracer gas technique

The air change rate in a single story office building was measured using a tracer gas technique. The air change rate was determined by the rate of decay method using sulfur hexafluoride as the tracer gas. A total of eight tests were conducted within a forty-eight hour period under small temperature differences and wind velocities. Two different building conditions were investigated: (1) supply ventilation fan on, producing a positive pressure in the building, and (2) supply ventilation fan off. Two sampling techniques were used: (1) multipoint sampling, (2) single-point return air sampling. From this research an effective technique was developed for calibrating portable gas chromatographs. For this particular building, tests showed that the single-point return air sampling technique compared favorably with the multi-point sampling technique. With the limited number of tests, no empirical relationship between temperature difference, pressure difference and air change rate could be developed, although certain trends were established.

Alternative patterns of industrial energy consumption in the Northeast (open access)

Alternative patterns of industrial energy consumption in the Northeast

This report presents a description of the methods used to generate the industrial energy demand (at the 2 digit SIC level) alternatives by fuel for the Northeast Energy Perspectives Study. First, the data sources, assumptions, and methodology employed to construct the 1972 industrial energy consumption in the region are discussed. Utilizing this base-year information and existing projections and assumptions of underlying economic phenomena, a number of alternative energy-consumption patterns were calculated for the Northeastern industrial sector in the years 1985 and 2000. These alternative patterns may be classified as follows: Reference Case (Fixed Energy Coefficients); Energy Conservation: Shift to Electricity; Reference Case Total Energy Demand: Shift to Electricity; Conservation Case Total Energy Demand: Reference Case Fuel Mix; Conservation Case Total Energy Demand: Shift to Coal; Conservation Case Total Energy Demand: Shift to Low-Btu Gas and Electricity; and Reference Case Total Energy Demand: Shift to Low-Btu Gas and Electricity.

AMP (Activity Manipulation Program) (open access)

AMP (Activity Manipulation Program)

AMP is a FORTRAN IV program written to handle energy-group structured activity factors such as sources, conversion factors, and response functions, as used by ANISN, DOT III, and other nuclear reactor and shielding codes. Activities may be retrieved from ANISN-type cross-section and activity sets found on cards and tapes, and from tabular-type sets on cards. They may be altered by change of group structure, multiplication by a constant, or multiplication by delta E (the group-energy interval), and then output to ANISN-type cards or tape and tabular-type cards. A full edit of input and output activities is always printed by group and activity number.

Analysis of neutron scattering and gamma-ray production integral experiments on nitrogen for neutron energies from 1 to 15 MeV (open access)

Analysis of neutron scattering and gamma-ray production integral experiments on nitrogen for neutron energies from 1 to 15 MeV

Two integral experiments of neutron scattering and gamma-ray production from nitrogen samples performed at Intelcom Radiation Technology and Oak Ridge National Laboratory were analyzed with Monte Carlo calculations. The experimental results include angular-dependent NE-213 detector count rates for both scattered neutrons and gamma-ray production from a spherical dewar of liquid nitrogen pulsed with a neutron beam with energies from 1 to 20 MeV. Additional results were reported in the ORNL experiments for unfolded scattered neutron and gamma-ray production spectra as a function of detector angle in broad incident neutron energy bins. Multigroup Monte Carlo calculations were made to analyze all the reported results. Conclusions were drawn about the status of the ENDF/B- IV nitrogen cross-section data file from the comparison of calculated and experimental results. 1 table, 44 figures. (auth)

Annual highlights report for 1975 (open access)

Annual highlights report for 1975

Mound`s work through the year centered on development, production, and surveillance of weapon components; development and assembly of plutonium-238 heat sources; production and sales of stable isotopes; separation of special radioisotopes; development of Safeguards procedures for nuclear materials control; and development of improved techniques for effluent control and waste management. Reductions in funding for certain programs led to reductions in the work force during the last half of the year. Year end employment was 1542, down 157 from January 1. Application of the Zero-Base Budgeting concept, particularly in the overhead areas, enabled the Laboratory to manage the funding reductions with minimal impact on vital services.

Approach to ferromagnetism in amorphous Ni--P--B alloys (open access)

Approach to ferromagnetism in amorphous Ni--P--B alloys

Magnetization was measured between 1.7 and 300/sup 0/K in fields up to 70 kOe on splat-cooled Ni--P--B amorphous alloys in the critical concentration range for the appearance of ferromagnetism. The onset of ferromagnetism is attributed to interactions between giant moments. For the composition range investigated, the magnetic contribution is arising mainly from moments of 5 to 6 ..mu../sub B/ with a Kondo-type characteristic temperature of 1/sup 0/K.

Assessment of primary piping integrity and leak development characteristics for the Clinch River Breeder Reactor Plant (open access)

Assessment of primary piping integrity and leak development characteristics for the Clinch River Breeder Reactor Plant

An interim assessment is presented of factors affecting primary piping integrity and leak development characteristics in the CRBRP in relation to the leak-before-break concept. Factors considered are the mechanical aspects of crack initiation and growth, sodium corrosion and mass transport, caustic corrosion, and fabrication and inspection/surveillance techniques. An assessment of these factors leads to the following conclusions: while the leak-before-break concept appears to have validity, there exist several areas of concern that only further research can resolve: (1) the lack of validation of fracture mechanics to highly ductile alloys operating at elevated temperatures under complex stress conditions; (2) the lack of understanding of the impact of the various degradation modes of the sodium environment; and (3) the limitations of the proposed inspection/surveillance techniques in localizing piping defections and, then the extent, cause and potential for the existance of like conditions elsewhere in the piping system.

Automated array assembly. Quarterly report No. 1, February--March 1976 (open access)

Automated array assembly. Quarterly report No. 1, February--March 1976

We have begun our study for the Automated Array Assembly Task by simultaneously evaluating present manufacturing techniques using expenses based on experience and studying basic cost factors for each step to evaluate expenses from a first-principles point of view. We are developing a formal cost accounting procedure which will be used throughout the study for cost comparisons. The first test of this procedure is a comparison of its predicted costs for array module manufacturing with costs from a study we have now completed which is based on experience factors. In this completed study, which is described in this report, we estimate a manufacturing cost for array modules of $10/W, based on present-day manufacturing techniques, expenses, and materials costs. Our analytical system to provide the input data for the cost analysis is also described. The analysis of different input sheet forms and quality has begun.

AXMIX program for cross section mixing and library arrangement. [In FORTRAN IV for IBM 360 computers] (open access)

AXMIX program for cross section mixing and library arrangement. [In FORTRAN IV for IBM 360 computers]

AXMIX is a FORTRAN IV computer code written to provide the user a tool for creating cross-section data sets for ANISN and DOT from cross-section sets already available on cards, nuclide-organized libraries, and group-independent data sets. Numerous options, including adjointing, P/sub n/ adjustments, and changing table length, are available to give the user broad flexibility. The number of energy groups which will fit into the core allocated is determined first. If all groups will fit, the solution is straightforward; if not, then the maximum number of groups which will fit is processed repeatedly by using direct access I/O and storage disks. Some flexibility in applying AXMIX is lost when cross sections to be processed contain upscatter. A special section on upscatter is included in the report. AXMIX is written for IBM System 360 computers with at least 150K bytes of memory. Problems of a practical nature require from 2 to 20 seconds of CPU time on a 360/91 computer. Running time is inversely proportional to the number of groups of data which will fit into core memory. I/O time is 50 to 100 times CPU time. (RWR)
