Tectonic Map of Eastern Montana Showing the Distribution of Uranium Deposits (open access)

Tectonic Map of Eastern Montana Showing the Distribution of Uranium Deposits

From introduction: A tectonic map for the northern part of the Cordilleran Foreland was compiled to aid in establishing the geologic setting of uranium deposits within the region, and to determine what relationships, if any, exist between the distribution of uranium deposits and localities, and the regional tectonic pattern (Osterwald, 1955). The relationships might suggest new areas favorable for the discovery of uranium deposits in the Cordilleran Foreland as well as in other areas with similar tectonic history. The map will show the distribution of crest lines and troughs of folds, faults, uranium deposits and localities, and areas of volcanic activity. Outcrop areas of Precambrian and post-Eocene rocks are shown to designate the relative age of structures. Where possible the Precambrian rocks are subdivided into structural types, so that their influence on younger deformations may be inferred. The map of eastern Montana is one of a series being prepared before the final map is assembled (fig. 1.).

Uranium-Bearing Coal in the Central Part of the Great Divide Basin, Sweetwater County, Wyoming

From abstract: Field work leading to this report was done by the U. S. Geological Survey for the Division of Raw Materials of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission, Nearly 24 townships were mapped in the central part of the Great Divide Basin, Sweetwater County, Wyoming, Fourteen of these townships contain outcrops of uranium-bearing coal. Thirty coal beds were mapped, but only seven of them have uranium-bearing coal reserves as defined in this report.

Relation Between Dual Acidity and Structure of H-Montmorillonite

The following report covers potentiometric studies with hydrogen-sensitive and cation-sensitive glass electrodes supplemented by chemical determinations and X-ray diffractions on a hydrogen-montmorillonite. These studies indicate that the clay behaves as a mixture of two acids, resulting from the presence of interlayer and edge exchange sites, both occupied by hydrogen ions.

Hydrology of Selected Basins in the Warrior Coal Field, Alabama -- A Progress Report (open access)

Hydrology of Selected Basins in the Warrior Coal Field, Alabama -- A Progress Report

Abstract: Hydrologic data are being collected in four basins in the Warrior coal field to provide baseline information to aid in determining the effect mining will have on water resource Basins monitored are in two different geologic and hydrologic environments. Well yields from the Pottsville Formation generally range from 0 to 0.3 L/s, whereas well yields from the Coker Formation generally range from 0.3 L/s to 6.4 L/s. Streamflow distribute reflects seasonal precipitation. Streams draining basins underlain chiefly by the Pottsville Formation frequently go dry, whereas those draining basins underlain chiefly by the Coker Formation have well sustained low flows. Water in the Pottsville Formation is slightly acidic and moderately hard to very hard. Dissolved solids concentrations ranged from 176 to 268 mg/L. Water in the Coker Formation is soft, far less mineralized and more acidic than water in the Pottsville. Surface water is generally soft, acidic, and low in dissolved solids concentrations. Water in streams draining basins underlain chiefly by the Pottsville Formation was slightly more mineralized and less acidic than water in streams draining the Coker Formation.

Limnology of Laguna Tortuguero, Puerto Rico (open access)

Limnology of Laguna Tortuguero, Puerto Rico

Abstract: The principal chemical, physical and biological characteristics, as well as the hydrology of Laguna Tortuguero, Puerto Rico, were studied from 1974-75. The lagoon, with and area of 2.24 square kilometers and a volume of about 2.68 million cubic meters, contains about 5 percent of seawater. Drainage through a canal on the north side averages 0.64 cubic meters per second per day, flushing the lagoon about 7.5 times per year. Chloride and sodium are the principal ions in the water, ranging from 300 to 700 mg/L and 150 to 400 mg/L, respectively. Among the nutrients, nitrogen averages about 1.7 milligrams per liter, exceeding phosphorus in a weight ratio of 170:1. About 10 percent of the nitrogen and 40 percent of the phosphorus entering the lagoon is retained. The bottom sediments, with a volume of about 4.5 million cubic meters, average 0.8 and 0.014 percent nitrogen and phosphorus, respectively.

Effect on Sediment Yield and Water Quality of a Nonrehabilitated Surface Coal Mine in North-Central Wyoming (open access)

Effect on Sediment Yield and Water Quality of a Nonrehabilitated Surface Coal Mine in North-Central Wyoming

From introduction: The purpose of this study was to determine the magnitude of some effects of an abandoned surface coal mine on the hydrologic environment. Specific objectives were (1) to define areas of erosion and deposition; (2) to determine if the sediment yield from an undisturbed drainage basin was less than that from a drainage basin partly disturbed by mining activity; and (3) to determine if there were differences in chemical composition of hillslope materials, sediment, and pond water in the two basins.
