Radiometric Analysis of Thick Samples (open access)

Radiometric Analysis of Thick Samples

Introduction: Measurements of polonium content in solids are usually performed by dissolving the material and preparing a thin sample which can be measured with one of the available instruments. A measurement of the radiation emerging from the thick sample should be sufficient to evaluate the polonium content. For this reason a calculation has been performed and the results have been compared with those obtained by the thin sample method. Obviously this proposed method using thick samples would be faster.

Nuclear Track Image Intensifier (open access)

Nuclear Track Image Intensifier

"Design and fabrication techniques were improved so that the large area image intensifier now performs well in image intensifier systems for photographing nuclear tracks. Two successful samples meeting most of the objectives were completed and started in circulation among members of the AEC Image Intensifier Committee for evaluation in systems to record nuclear tracks. Except for a reported long decay in the P-15 phosphor performance was quite good. Resolution, gain, and background requirements were met. Magnification was still high (1/6.5 compared to a design objective of 1/8) but can be lowered to 1/8 by a straightforward mechanical change. Evaporated layers of thallium activated rubidium and cesium iodide were improved and further evaluated. Improved control of color and persistence was obtained. Efficiency as high as 1/3 that of P-11 phosphor was obtained in some samples. The current test series confirmed earlier results that an increase in cesium iodide content shifts the emission spectrum towards the yellow. Burn-resistance and light output was poorer for the cesium enriched phosphors while decay time was decreased.

Preparation of Ductile Zirconium: Progress Report for February 1950 (open access)

Preparation of Ductile Zirconium: Progress Report for February 1950

Abstract: A tungsten tipped electrode has been used in the continuous casting arc furnace for a 25 minute period during which a 12 inch length of ingot was made. Thermocouple junctions within the mold wall have been improved to give mold zone temperature. A total of 10 iodide dissociation runs have been conducted using feed rates of .62-22.7 lbs ZrI₄ per hour with attendant conversion efficiencies of 97.7-16.4% and zirconium yields of 255-41.2 grams per hour. A curve expressing these data for an arbitrarily selected set of conditions is presented.

A Study of the Mechanisms of Heat Treatment of Zirconium-Base Alloys : Status Report, July 1, 1955 - February 29, 1956 (open access)

A Study of the Mechanisms of Heat Treatment of Zirconium-Base Alloys : Status Report, July 1, 1955 - February 29, 1956

The kinetics of transformation of zirconium binary alloys is being pursued. Mechanical property variation as a function of transformation if also being investigated. Zirconium-tin and zirconium-titanium alloys transform very rapidly when quenched from the beta field. These alloys have, generally speaking, been demonstrated to be not amenable to heat treatment in the normal sense of the word. Eutectoid alloys, principally zirconium-molybdenum alloys, have shown a definite response to heat treatment in terms of mechanical property variation. An embrittling agent, probably "omega" phase, is suspect at this time for the brittleness observed in certain molybdenum alloys and the very high hardness levels reached in other alloys such as zirconium-niobium and zirconium-thorium. Work to establish the existence of omega phase is in progress and, it is hoped, suggestions for avoiding the brittle condition associated with it will be forthcoming.

An Ultrasonic System for Testing Isotope Heat Capsules (open access)

An Ultrasonic System for Testing Isotope Heat Capsules

Introduction: This report describes a program to develop a nondestructive (ultrasonic) tester and testing procedure to perform integrity tests on isotope heat source containers. The increased application of isotope heat sources has brought more attention to the engineering problems encountered during fabrication. One of the most important of these problems is insuring the isotope containment during the long unattended periods of use. To determine the integrity of the heat source container, a nondestructive testing procedure must be adopted to test each heat source after fabrication.
