Equipment Decontamination: a Brief Survey of the DOE Complex

Deactivation at DOE facilities has left a tremendous amount of contaminated equipment behind. In-situ methods are needed to decontaminate the interiors of the equipment sufficiently to allow either free release or land disposal. A brief survey was completed of the DOE complex on their needs for equipment decontamination with in-situ technology to determine (1) the types of contamination problems within the DOE complex, (2) decontamination processes that are being used or are being developed within the DOE, and (3) the methods that are available to dispose of spent decontamination solutions. In addition, potential sites for using testing decontamination methods were located. Based on the information obtained from these surveys, the Rocky Flats Plants and the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory appear to be best suited complete the initial testing of the decontamination processes.

A General Model for Turbulent Momentum and Heat Transport in Liquid Metals

This report develops a general single-point closure scheme for calculating the local levels of turbulent fluxes of momentum and heat in liquid-metal flows. Transport effects are accounted for by way of the three scalar quantities: turbulent kinetic energy; turbulence-energy dissipation rate; and scalar energy (or half the mean temperature variance). Their values at any point in the flow are obtained from the solution of conservation equations of transport type for each of the three quantities. The turbulent momentum fluxes (Reynolds stresses) and heat-transport rates are then obtained from the algebraic formulas containing the above scalar quantities and the mean velocity and temperature fields.

Isotopic Anomalies in High Z Elements : Uranium?

Uranium in terrestrial volcanic ejecta from mantle-related sources has been analyzed mass spectrometrically. The objective was to seek supporting evidence for or refutation isotopic variations reported by Fried et al. (1985) for some such samples. The possibility that terrestrial U is not of constant isotopic composition is extraordinary. If true, mechanisms for creating the variation must be sought and the lack of homogenization within the earth addressed. Samples of 100 grams or more were processed in order to minimize reagent and environmental (laboratory) blank interference and to permit isolation of large amounts (several to tens of .mu.g) of U for the mass spectrometer (MS) measurements, which utilizes aliquots of (approximately)1 .mu.g. Aliquants from four volcanic samples gave data which indicate enrichments of ₂₃₅U ranging from 0.2% to 5.9% in the 235/238 ratio relative normal uranium ratios. These relative enrichments are consistent with, and in some cases, higher than the 0.18% enrichment reported by Fried et al. (1985) for two volcanic lava samples. However, we were not able to reproduce their results on the Kilauea lava for which they report 0.18% ²³⁵U enrichment. The relative error in our MS ratios is 0.05% -- 0.07%. 1 tab.

Reactor Physics Studies in the GCFR Phase III Critical Assembly

The third phase of the gas cooled fast reactor (GCFR) program, ZPR-9 Assembly 30, is based on a multi-zoned core of PuO2-UO2 with radial and axial blankets of uranium dioxide. Studies performed in this assembly will be compared to the previous phases of the GCFR program and will help to define parameters in this power-flattened demonstration plant-type core. Measurements in the Phase III program included small sample reactivity worths of various materials, central reaction rates and reaction rate distributions, absorption-to-fission ratios and the central point conversion ratio and the worth of steam entry into a small central zone. The reactivity change associated with the construction of a central pin zone in the core and axial blanket was measured. Reaction rate and steam entry measurements were repeated in the pin environment. Standard analysis methods using ENDF/B-IV data are described and the results are compared to measurements performed during the program.

The present cells, which operate at 400-500 C, are of a vertically oriented, prismatic design with one or more inner positive electrodes of FeS or FeS2, facing negative electrodes of lithium-aluminum or lithium-silicon alloy, and molten LiCl-KC1 electrolyte.

Effects of Preferred Orientation and Grain Size On Dimensional Stability of Uranium on Thermal Cycling and Irradiation : Final Report -- Metallurgy Program 5.1.7

The growth of alpha-rolled uranium rods on thermal cycling has been shown to depend on both preferred orientation and grain size. Preferred orientation appears to be a necessary condition for growth to occur; the extent of the growth depends upon the sharpness and type of texture developed and on the grain size. The highest growth rates occur in specimens with highly developed textures coupled with small grain sizes. The growth rates increase with cycling level, particularly in specimens of large grain size.

Recovery of Uranium From Ore Concentrates

The use of bromine trifluoride solution has been investigated for the preparation of purified uranium hexafluoride from ore concentrates. The best yields were obtained with the use of antimony pentafluoride solutions in bromine trifluoride, and less fluorine was consumed in the case of previously hydro fluorinated samples. This approach appears to be technologically sound and may prove economically superior to existing procedures in the case of newly constructed facilities.

Casting of Blanket Bricks, Ring, Plug, and Control Rods for the Experimental Breeder Reactor (CP-4)

The cup assembly of the Experimental Breeder Reactor (EBR) consists of blanket bricks, inner rings, and safety plug, all of natural uranium. The design of the finish machined brick is shown in Figure 1. These pie shaped bricks when stacked together, 12 bricks arranged in circular form and stacked seven rings high, comprise the cylindrical portion of the outer blanket, 17.875" I.D. x 30.875" O.D. after machining and canning. The inner ring, which is shown in Figure 2, fits inside the bottom layer of bricks. The circular opening in the center of the inner ring is closed by the safety plug shown in Figure 3.

Summary Report of the Hazards of the Internal Exponential Experiment (ZPR-V)

The Internal exponential Exponential Experiment (ZPR-V) will be constructed by loading up to 49 of the fuel cans, containing up to 155 kg of U235, of the present Fast Exponential Experiment in a 22-in. square iron tank, surrounded by an annular thermal region of fully enriched light water lattice 10 to 15 cm thick. This assembly will be placed in a 5-ft diameter tank which will, in turn, be located in the 10-ft diameter ZPR-II tank, the annular space between the outer tanks containing water for shielding. The new experiment will be a well-shielded, strongly coupled fast-thermal system. It will be possible to make measurements that cannot be made on the present Fast Exponential Experiment. One category of such determinations is the study of reactivity effects produced in the fast core, including control scheme studies and danger coefficient and oscillator measurements of such effects as Doppler coefficients and effect of lumping and streaming. The higher flux and excellent shielding will make beam studies of energy spectrum practical. Additional foil activations will be possible. Characteristics of mixed fast-thermal systems, which are of potential importance as power breeders, can be studied.

A final series of runs was made in a four-inch continuous-flow mixing chamber to study the transfer of isobutanol into water and nitrobenzene into ethylene glycol. Satisfactory techniques were developed to provide for the rapid analysis of these systems. In addition, a light-scattering correlation was prepared to provide a measure of the interfacial area of the yellow-colored nitrobenzene-ethylene glycol mixtures.
