Microbeam Technologies Incorporated (MTI) is working with Prairie View to develop and demonstrate a new method to remove deposits from coal-fired utility boilers. MTI is providing background information on fuel properties, ash formation, ash deposition, and ash removal. In addition, MTI is providing deposits collected from a full scale utility boilers. Ash deposits on fireside heat exchange surfaces of power plants significantly decrease plant efficiency and are aggravated by variability in coal quality. Deposit formation is related to coal quality (chemical and physical characteristics of the inorganic material), system operating conditions, and system design. Variations in coal quality can significantly influence ash deposition on heat transfer surfaces resulting in decreased plant performance and availability. Ash accumulations on heat transfer surfaces require annual or semi-annual shutdowns for cleaning which result in cleaning costs and lost revenues from being off-line. In addition, maintaining slag flow in wet bottom boilers and cyclone-fired boilers can require co-firing of other fuels and outages to remove frozen slag resulting in decreased efficiency and availability. Slang characterization and removal using pulse detonation technology during coal gasification

Boiler slagging and fouling as a result of inorganic impurities in combustion gases being deposited on heat transfer tubes have caused severe problems in coal-fired power plant operation. These problems are fuel, system design, and operating condition dependent. Pulse detonation technology for the purpose of removing slag and fouling deposits in coal-fired utility power plant boilers offers great potential. The detonation wave technique based on high impact velocity with sufficient energy and thermal shock on the slag deposited on gas contact surfaces offers a convenient, inexpensive, yet efficient and effective way to supplement existing slag removal methods. These detonation waves have been demonstrated experimentally to have exceptionally high shearing capability important to the task of removing slag and fouling deposits. The experimental results show that the single shot detonation wave is capable of removing the entire slag (types of slag deposited on economizer) even at a distance of 8 in. from the exit of a detonation engine tube. Wave strength and slag orientation also have different effects on the chipping off of the slag. This paper discusses about the results obtained in effectively removing the economizer slag.

In Situ Studies of Corrosion Using X-Ray Absorption Near Spectroscopy (Xanes)

Applications of x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) and the design of cells for in situ corrosion studies are reviewed. Passive films studies require very thin metal or alloy layers be used having a thickness of the order of the films formed because of penetration of the x-ray beam into the metal substrate. The depth of penetration in water also limits the thickness of solutions that can be used because of water reduces the x-ray intensity. Solution thickness must also be limited in studies of conversion layer formation studies because the masking of the Cr in solution. Illustrative examples are taken from the anodic behavior of Al-Cr alloys, the growth of passive films on Fe and stainless steels, and the formation of chromate conversion layers on Al.

Parameters of the 132 eV Neutron Resonance in Co 59

An accurate determination of the parameters of the resonance excited by the interaction of the 132 eV neutrons with the Co 59 target nucleus has been made, using the fast choppers at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the United States and Chalk River Laboratory in Canada. Neutron transmission through thick and thin samples resulted in the following parameters: [parameters not transcribed]. In addition, measurements of the resonance capture γ-ray intensity gave the value for the radiation width Γγ= 0.40 ± 0.04 eV, based on the known thermal capture cross section of cobalt of 37.5 barns. The reduced and total resonance capture integrals are calculated from the above parameters to be 50.5 ± 5.5 and 67.0 ± 5.5 barns, respectively. The above results are compared with previously determined resonance parameters and also with direct measurements of the total resonance capture integral.

Characterization of Vapor Deposited Nano Structured Membranes

The vapor deposition methods of planar magnetron sputtering and electron-beam evaporation are used to synthesize materials with nano structured morphological features that have ultra-high surface areas with continuous open porosity at the nano scale. These nano structured membranes are used in a variety of fuel cells to provide electrode and catalytic functions. Specifically, stand alone and composite nickel electrodes for use in thin film solid-oxide, and molten carbonate fuel cells are formed by sputter deposition and electron bean evaporation, respectively. Also, a potentially high-performance catalyst material for the direct reformation of hydrocarbon fuels at low temperatures is deposited as a nano structure by the reactive sputtering of a copper-zinc alloy using a partial pressure of oxygen at an elevated substrate temperature.

The results of the investigation indicate that, as the angle of attack increased at the higher Mach numbers, the pressure coefficient for a vacuum limited the extent to which the upper-surface pressures could expand. Consequently most of the increase in section normal-force coefficient at high angles of attack can be attributed to the increase in pressure over the lower surface."

High Efficiency Fossil Power Plant (HEFPP) Conceptualization Program

This study confirms the feasibility of a natural gas fueled, 20 MW M-C Power integrated pressurized molten carbonate fuel cell combined in a topping cycle with a gas turbine generator plant. The high efficiency fossil power plant (HEFPP) concept has a 70% efficiency on a LHV basis. The study confirms the HEFPP has a cost advantage on a cost of electricity basis over the gas turbine based combined cycle plants in the 20 MW size range. The study also identifies the areas of further development required for the fuel cell, gas turbine generator, cathode blower, inverter, and power module vessel. The HEFPP concept offers an environmentally friendly power plant with minuscule emission levels when compared with the combined cycle power plant.

The United States and its allies are helping Afghanistan emerging from more than 22 years of warfare, although substantial risk to Afghan stability remains. Before the U.S. military campaign against the orthodox Islamist Taliban movement began on October 7, 2001, Afghanistan had been mired in conflict since the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. The defeat of the Taliban has enabled the United States and its coalition partners to send forces throughout Afghanistan to search for Taliban and Al Qaeda fighters and leaders that remain at large, including Osama bin Laden. As the war against remaining Al Qaeda and Taliban elements winds down, the United States is shifting its military focus toward stabilizing the interim government, including training a new Afghan national army, and supporting the international security force (ISAF) that is helping the new government provide security.

Accurate Computer Simulation of a Drift Chamber

A general purpose program for drift chamber studies is described. First the capacitance matrix is calculated using a Green's function technique. The matrix is used in a linear-least-squares fit to choose optimal operating voltages. Next the electric field is computed, and given knowledge of gas parameters and magnetic field environment, a family of electron trajectories is determined. These are finally used to make drift distance vs time curves which may be used directly by a track reconstruction program. Results are compared with data obtained from the cylindrical chamber in the Axial Field Magnet experiment at the CERN ISR.
