Study of electron and neutrino interactions (open access)

Study of electron and neutrino interactions

This is the final report for the DOE-sponsored experimental particle physics program at Virginia Tech to study the properties of the Standard Model of strong and electroweak interactions. This contract (DE-AS05-80ER10713) covers the period from August 1, 1980 to January 31, 1993. Task B of this contract, headed by Professor Alexander Abashian, is described in this final report. This program has been pursued on many fronts by the researchers-in a search for axions at SLAC, in electron-positron collisions in the AMY experiment at the TRISTAN collider in Japan, in measurements of muon decay properties in the MEGA and RHO experiments at the LAMPF accelerator, in a detailed analysis of scattering effects in the purported observation of a 17 keV neutrino at Oxford, in a search for a disoriented chiral condensate with the MiniMax experiment at Fermilab, and in an R&D program on resistive plate counters that could find use in low-cost high-quality charged particle detection at low rates.

Summary final report: Contract between the Japan atomic power company and the U.S. Department of Energy Improvement of core safety - study on GEM (III) (open access)

Summary final report: Contract between the Japan atomic power company and the U.S. Department of Energy Improvement of core safety - study on GEM (III)

This report provides a summary of activities associated with the technical exchange between representatives of the Japan Atomic Power Company (JAPC) and the United States Department of Energy (DOE) regarding the development and testing of Gas Expansion Modules (GEM) at the Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF). Issuance of this report completes the scope of work defined in the original contract between JAPC and DOE titled ''Study on Improvement of Core Safety - Study on GEM (III).'' Negotiations related to potential modification of the contract are in progress. Under the proposed contract modification, DOE would provide an additional report documenting FFTF pump start tests with GEMs and answer additional JAPC questions related to core safety with and without GEMs.

Modeling for deformable mirrors and the adaptive optics optimization program (open access)

Modeling for deformable mirrors and the adaptive optics optimization program

We discuss aspects of adaptive optics optimization for large fusion laser systems such as the 192-arm National Ignition Facility (NIF) at LLNL. By way of example, we considered the discrete actuator deformable mirror and Hartmann sensor system used on the Beamlet laser. Beamlet is a single-aperture prototype of the 11-0-5 slab amplifier design for NIF, and so we expect similar optical distortion levels and deformable mirror correction requirements. We are now in the process of developing a numerically efficient object oriented C++ language implementation of our adaptive optics and wavefront sensor code, but this code is not yet operational. Results are based instead on the prototype algorithms, coded-up in an interpreted array processing computer language.

Optimization of char for NO{sub x} removal. Semiannual report, June 30--December 31, 1996 (open access)

Optimization of char for NO{sub x} removal. Semiannual report, June 30--December 31, 1996

The overall goal of this program is to develop a coal char or carbon capable of selectively removing NOx species from combustion exhaust streams (e.g., exhaust from coal burning power plants) containing both oxygen and NOx. Inexpensive methods to achieve NOx abatement from such streams is presently a major environmental concern. Both fundamental studies of carbon/coal char surface chemistry and tests of different materials under realistic conditions are underway. Work performed for this study demonstrates that the identity of the treatment gas strongly impacts the surface chemistry of activated carbon. Carbon treated in an inert gas will have dangling carbons on the surface which strongly react with oxygen, and NO, at 300 K. In contrast, hydrogen treated activated carbon will adsorb very little NO at 300 K, but will adsorb significant amounts of NO. The relative selectivity of hydrogen treated carbons toward NO adsorption makes this material a candidate for removal of NO from the exhaust of lean burn combustors.
