In a section of the area occupied by the Atomic Energy Commission in Grand Junction, Colorado, a pilot plant is being erected to test a resin-in-pulp process. The process is based on the adsorption of uranium by resin from acid pulps. The first ores to be treated at this plant will be Monticello Stockpile Material. Samples of the various stockpiles sere subjected to a series of leaching, filtering and settling tests, the results of which are presented in this report.

Theoretical study of the lateral frequency response to gusts of a fighter airplane, both with controls fixed and with several types of autopilots

Report presenting a theoretical approach to determine the lateral frequency response of a fighter airplane to side gusts and rolling gusts at a Mach number of 0.7 and an altitude of 30,000 feet. Frequency response and power spectral density were determined with the controls fixed and in combination with three different basic types of attitude autopilots.

P-P Elastic and Charge-Exchange Scattering at about 120 Mev

Observation of antiprotons in a propane or hydrogen bubble chamber offers the possiblity of studying several phenomena for which counter or photographic emulsion techniques are less suitable. Because there is a high ratio of pions, muons, and electrons to antiprotons in the available momentum-analyzed beams, these beams cannot be used in the bubble chamber without an initial purification, which increases the ratio of antiprotons to other particles. Such a purification has been achieved by utilizing the difference in rates of momentum loss in absorbers between antiprotons and other particles. The principle of the method is to pass a momentum-analyzed beam through an absorber. Since particles of unequal mass do not have the same specific ionization they lose different amounts of momentum, and a further magnetic deflection suffices to separate the particles physically according to mass. In this experiment a desirable momentum for antiprotons entering the bubble chamber was 684 Mev/c; however, at this momentum the ratio of undesirable particles to antiprotons at the target where they are produced is about 6 x 10{sup 5}. Strain-Gage Measurements of Buffeting Loads on a Jet-Powered Bomber Airplane

Buffet boundaries, buffeting-load increments for the stabilizers and elevators, and buffeting bending-moment increments for the stabilizers and wings as measured in gradual maneuvers for a jet-powered bomber airplane are presented. The buffeting-load increments were determined from strain-gage measurements at the roots or hinge supports of the various surfaces considered. The Mach numbers of the tests ranged from 0.19 to 0.78 at altitudes close to 30,000 feet. The predominant buffet frequencies were close to the natural frequencies of the structural components. The buffeting-load data, when extrapolated to low-altitude conditions, indicated loads on the elevators and stabilizers near the design limit loads. When the airplane was held in buffeting, the load increments were larger than when recovery was made immediately.

Report presenting an investigation in the high-speed tunnel to determine the static aerodynamic forces and moments on a missile model during simulated launching from midsemispan locations of various types of wings. The purpose of the investigation is to determine the nature and origin of the mutual interference experienced by various combinations of wing-fuselage models and externally carried missiles. Results regarding isolated missile characteristics, the effect of varying chordwise position, effects of angle of attack and Mach number, effect of airplane wing geometric characteristics, effect of missile spanwise location, and comparison of wing-fuselage and fuselage effects on the missile forces and moments are provided.

An experimental batch distillation column was used to purify UF/sub 6/ containing metal impurities. The degree of purification was determined by comparing the spectrographic analyses of the UF/sub 6/ distillate material with the original feed or pot material. From Summary: "Experimental force, moment, and center-of-pressure variations for a large number of bodies of revolution have been compared with the calculated characteristics based on the approximate theory developed in NACA-RM-A9I26. The bodies varied in fineness ratio from 4.5 to 21.1, from blunt unboattailed bodies to airship hulls, and the experimental results are given for widely varying Mach number ranges of angle of attack. It is shown that the lift and drag characteristics are fairly accurately predicted by the theory but that the actual center of pressure is more rearward than the theory indicates."

Force and pressure recovery characteristics at supersonic speeds of a conical spike inlet with a bypass discharging from the top or bottom of the diffuser in an axial direction

Force and pressure-recovery characteristics of a nacelle-type conical-spike inlet with a fixed-area bypass located in the top or bottom of the diffuser are presented for flight Mach numbers of 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0 for angles of attack from 0 degrees to 9 degrees. Top or bottom location of the bypass did not have significant effects on diffuser pressure-recovery, bypass mass-flow ratio, or drag coefficient over the range of angles of attack, flight Mach numbers, and stable engine mass-flow ratios investigated. A larger stable subcritical operating range was obtained with the bypass on the bottom at angles of attack from 3 degrees to 9 degrees at a flight Mach number of 2.0. At a flight Mach number of 2.0, the discharge of 14 percent of the critical mass flow of the inlet by means of a bypass increased the drag only one-fifth of the additive drag that would result for equivalent spillage behind an inlet normal shock without significant reductions in diffuser pressure recovery.

This report discusses the proposal to expand the existing 224-U Building from an instantaneous rate of 13.5 tons of uranium per day to 18.5 tons per day. This is to be accomplished by the installation of two additional 8{prime} calcining kettles (or pots) available through the Atomic Energy Commission from Luckey, Ohio. It is the purpose of this report to present calculations and recommendations upon which design work is proceeding. This expansion is to utilize existing facilities of 224-U whenever possible and this report forms a record of the methods used in evaluating equipment and systems. Included are analysis of pot ventilation and pot unloading, stress analysis of the new pots, radiation hazard calculations and a composite schematic.

Zircex Fluoride Volatility Combination

In using the Zircex Process head-end to recover Zr from fuel elements before recovery of U by fluoride volatility, loss of U as UCl/sub 4/ is a problem. The suitability of using a Ni wire filter for trapping entrained UCl/sub 4/, and recovery of the trapped U by direct fluorination of filter and residue is investigated. It is recommended from these studies that water vapor and oxygen should be kept out of the reactor, and that the filter and filter material should be further investigated. (T.R.H.)
